I'm sorry, what thing are you looking for?

I am not finding any information, at this time, that Nucynta, which contains the active ingredient Tapentadol, that is used to treat pain, has been discontinued. However, if it was a very recent action, it may not be added to the FDA databases, yet.

Do you have a source for this information?

My mother has been taking nucynta for years. It's the only drug she doesn't have a reaction to. Her pharmacy has said it was a manufacturing problem and they would have it in a few weeks. Doesn't help right now as a believe she is having withdrawals.

Has it been discontinued or is it a manufacturer issue? Walgreens told me they have discontinued the med. Is that how you find out you're no longer taking the medication...? The pharmacy has had my prescription since 9/14/17 and notified me yesterday when I called.

My doctor lowered my Nycunta from 150mg after a couple of years to 100mg with no explanation. Then Walgreens advised it was discontinued by the maker and the doctors knew it. Hmmm not sure what's going on but I think further investigation is needed.

I've been informed that it's not discontinued.

Editor's note: a phone number has been removed from this message as it could not be verified.

Nycunta ER has not been discontinued, there's just been a change in the order number of the product.

Re: Butch J (# 8) Expand Referenced Message

I just got off the phone with Walgreens. I dropped a script for Nuycnta. Walgreens first said they had to order it. I just called them and the pharmacist said the manufacturer discontinued it and they tried to get it from two distributors and couldnt. So i called the drs office to ask for something else and she said theyre still making it the problem is it comes from Puerto Rico and thats why they cant get it now.

Just wanted to give an UPDATE in the situation:

I just spoke with Depomed (Monday, October 16th 2017 @ 6:45pm EST) who makes/distributes Nucynta and I can confirm that Nucynta is not being discontinued nor is there an actual lack of availability (see below) for any reason having to do with production. The only thing that changed with Nucynta was it’s “NDC number” which identifies the labeler, product, as well as the trade package size and part of this number is assigned by the FDA. As of the end of September, it is readily available at distributors and any lack of availability is likely a result of the distributor catching up with orders that may have been impacted by the change prior to that time. Walgreens is simply giving out blatantly incorrect information. If you are unable to find the medication, you can call Depomed directly and they will take your information (including which pharmacy you use) and have someone from patient services (I believe that’s the name of the department) call you back in order to try to help you. Depomed’s number is (866) 458-6389.

Re: Patty (# 10) Expand Referenced Message

Nycunta ER has not been discontinued. I put a phone number for Depo Med contact but it was removed; the reason for removal of the number was that it could not be verified. I suggest you email/call Depo Med, they will respond. I had my prescription for Nycunta ER filled 10/16/17. Janie at Depo Med said the product number had been changed because Depo Med acquired the company that made the product. But it is still being made.

Re: Butch J (# 12) Expand Referenced Message

Thanks. I was able to get 100 of the 120 in my script at the only pharmacy that seems, to have any. I think the drs get kickbacks on this or something. I wanted the dr to write for something else instead of having to do all this running around when I can barely take more than a few steps,at a time. Anyway, he wouldnt.

You're welcome Patty. This has been an experience. Depo Med has a resource that will find in your area who has the quantities you need. Glad this site is available. I believe it was helpful to a lot of people, including me to you. Be blessed & much success!

Re: SUSAN (# 16) Expand Referenced Message

Its extremely hard to have it filled because supposedly it was made in Puerto Rico and when the hurricane hit everything stopped. I tried every pharmacy in town and they won't tell you anything unless you physically go there and give them the script, have them order it, tell you they cant get it, pick up the script and go somewhere else. Im not kidding. i did that. The drs office finally called some independent pharmacies and one had 100 of the 112 i needed. I dont think nucynta does anything. And when I filled it despite using a coupon the price had gone up because of Puerto Rucos situation. Good luck in getting it filled but I wouldnt count on it.

Re: Vero (# 11) Expand Referenced Message

Thank you for the info. After calling numerous pharmacies in my area with no success on the Nucynta, I was about to lose it. I simply can not deal with this messing with our medication any more than they have done. I came on here & found your message. I called the ph # and they were able to help me with a pharmacy that had my medicine, the Nucynta. Thank you so much, God Bless you for posting the info that you shared.

Re: Butch J (# 6) Expand Referenced Message

I have been on Nucynta ER for 2 years and on my last drug panel it showed no narcotics in my body and my dr dropped me! I'm not getting this at all!

I think you should call the manufacturer of Nucynta and ask them how long Nucynta ER remains in your system after taking it and explain what happened with the latest U/A. Then I would call the lab that did the test with this information. Did the dr say why they were dropping you? I guess he could have thought you weren't taking it and were selling it or something.

Re: Binkiebc (# 18) Expand Referenced Message

Hi there! Sorry I never replied as I did not see the updates to this thread until now (really really late...). So glad that you were able to get help from Depomed. It's a shame that so much incorrect information went around about this and frankly I'm amazed that pharmacies aren't more accountable about the information they are giving out. Frankly, I think most are just busy and so they don't have the time (which isn't really a good excuse when it comes to something as important as dispensing medications) or they just don't bother to verify information at a corporate or pharmacy level. I ended up changing my pharmacy to an independent pharmacy that is capable of ordering prescriptions overnight (despite the volume of meds CVS dispenses, they won't or can't do this) and has free delivery which is just a bonus. I'm much happier with them despite the fact that their hours are more limited, but when that becomes a problem it's usually negated by the fact that they deliver.

Anyway, so glad you were helped by that information. I know what it's like to get stuck between your doctor and a pharmacy that doesn't have time to (or just won't) help you.

Feel well!

Thank you. I was told the same by my Walgreens. Is it only Walgreens? All these replies cite Walgreens.

Re: Sandy (# 19) Expand Referenced Message

I took U/A's for jobs and doctors and after doing research I found out that unless the U/A is specifically looking for Nucynta (or the actual active ingredient) that the analysis will come back negative. I have been on Nucynta ER 100mg bid for about 6 years and it's always negative. The Percocet I take for breakthrough pain comes up as an Opioid. I confirmed the Nucynta only coming up when specifically being looked for, not only with doctors, but also medical directors I know who work for the labs. Hope this helps, but if your doctor ended your patient relationship based on it being negative, that doctor was not the right doctor to see anyway as they seem to only want to have positive samples as they get more insurance money or something. I had the same thing happen with a pain doctor I was seeing but they abruptly stopped wanting to see me as a patient because I asked questions about things to be informed and he just wanted to deal with “yes sir” type patients. He billed me over $1000 for each office visit to milk my insurance and he never did anything but take a U/A, fill out papers and fill prescriptions. Probably was being watched for high numbers of opioid script writing so people like me who asked questions made him worried that we might ask the “right” questions and he did not want that. Hope you find a much better more professional doctor.

Re: Manda (# 30) Expand Referenced Message

I told the doctor never did prescribe me Nucynta again because it was way too expensive once you got to a certain point where the coupons wouldn't kick in and I have good insurance and it was a pain in the neck trying to run around and see who has it when you're in pain that's the last thing you want to do so I just told them to prescribe me something else and they prescribed me Tramadol which is okay but it's not any different than Nuycnta and it only cost about. I really think it doesn't matter because all my pain is in my feet so you can never get away from it but the doctors that prescribe these pain meds aren't in any pain them self so they have illusions that these pain meds are going to solve all your problems and they don't or they're a lot more potent than they really are. Good luck with finding something that might work

Re: Kiz (# 29) Expand Referenced Message

Thanks. I called the number and multiple independent pharmacies that usually carry it. Everyone is out. However, after 7 weeks off it, my liver enzymes, which had been elevated for years, finally were normal. I think it has to be the Nucynta. So I’m going to talk to my doctor about other options. I appreciate your response though!

Re: Manda (# 28) Expand Referenced Message

My Dr had me fill with another pharmacy. That pharmacy said that because of the new laws in place this year that CVS is having trouble filling prescription diptions. When I called the manufacturer they confirmed there has been a shortage for a few years but that this has the been the worst yet due to hurricane almost wiping plant off face of earth.
Also, manufacturer gave me another number to call. I guess because of the shortage they have hired a team as medication locators. They found one place that showed having it in stock but when they called to confirm it had been filled. The pharmacy that ended up filling my prescription was a small family owned & operated pharmacy. So definitely call around and try the hospital pharmacies too.

Here is an article about the sale of Nucynta to another company - hopefully they will restore things soon? I’ve been off it for a month because no one has it.

My pain mgmt dr said the owner of the Nucynta manufacturer sold to another and that is creating delays. Seems there are many stories out there. All I get from every pharmacy is that it’s on backorder and has been for a month. I prefer Nucynta ER bc it helps minimize my need for Percocet.
