Not All Citalopram Generics The Same

Updated

I have been on Citalopram for two years but recently switched my prescription from Walgreens to Target (for convenience). I discovered that these retailers get their Citalopram from different manufacturers (the pills look entirely different, for one; and, the mfr. is also listed on the label). Within a few weeks it was obvious that the new prescription wasn't doing as good as job. So, I switched back (to Walgreens) and I'm glad I did. Sure enough, I've been feeling better again.

Lesson: You never kjnow: your body may respond better to one manufacturer's generic than another. I had read this was possible, and it ended up being true in this case for me.

HI! I'm glad you were able to switch back to the one that worked better for you.

They may not always get theirs from different companies, it really depends on who was offering the cheapest price at the time they needed to restock there supply. It's how they keep prices down for their uninsured customers, unfortunately that means that Walgreens may not always provide you with the one that works best for you, either.

If you request it, they may order it in for you, but there is nothing that obligates them to do so.

There can be some slight fluctuations in the amount of the active ingredient from one manufacturer to the next, so that might be what caused the problem.

Are there any questions or concerns?

I recently had a similar experience. I have been taking one manufacturer's type of generic celexa. However, the mail order that I use switched to another manufacturer. Within three weeks the same dosage of the new generic created feelings of apathy that I had not experienced with the initial generic. A psychiatrist explained to me that different manufacturers can vary the chemical composition as much as 30% between different generics. Fortunately, a local pharmacy is able to fill the prescription with the generics that I was initially using.
