I've been on Nortriptyline for 4 years, mainly for nerve irritation after an op. I had another op to solve the problem but continued with Nortriptyline because it helped my mood and pelvic pain. Just lately the pain has returned. My pharmacist has changed brands but tells me there isn't any way the tablet could cause this problem because the active ingredient is exactly the same. Could my discomfort returning and a change of brand be just coincidence? ## I just had exactly the same thing happen. I was on Nortryptyline for about year and it worked great. Switched pharmacies, got a new brand (Teva) made in Eastern Europe, and now the pain has come roaring back. When I switch back to the old the pain subsides. The Teva brand also causes bad headaches and nausea. There is no effing ...

I've tried almost all of the Zolofts, Paxils, Prozacs and I can not tolerate the serotonin. Now I'm trying Nortriptyline and I'm wondering if anyone has had a good result without suffering side effects that make you so sick you cant take it? ## Hello Vicki! How are you? Have you started taking it, yet? Nortriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant, so it works differently than the others. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Nortriptyline as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and mood changes. Ref: Nortriptyline Information What types of issues did you experience while taking the others? ## I also cannot tolerate any kind of SSRI, or SNRI, but I remember taking nortriptyline years ago for migraines I think and I don’t remember having any kind...

I have just started taking this drug and understand that it is to help me sleep and help with chronic pain. However, I cannot sleep well with this, even though I feel drugged for at least 15 hours after a very low dose - 10 mg. It is also supposed to help with depression, but I feel more depressed. Can anyone shed light on this for me? What are your experiences with this drug? ## Hi Mieke, As a psychotherapist and a Holistic practitioner I wanted to address your comment because it sounds like your body is not responding well to the medication. You are not sleeping well and feeling drugged out much of the day and most alarming is that even though it is supposed to help you with the depression, it is actually making you feel worse. I am speculating, but are you a young adult (18 to 25 yrs...

I have been taking 10mg of nortriptyline at night for migraine prevention for approximately 7 weeks. Shortly after starting this medication I began to have difficulty swallowing. After I eat I feel as though I have food stuck in my throat. Even the tiny, tiny nortriptyline pill taken with a glass of water sometimes feels stuck. Is difficulty swallowing a common side effect or should I be concerned? ## Hello, Sd26! How are you doing? I'm very sorry about the problem that you're having. It sounds like you might be experiencing some acid reflux, many medications can cause it. Have you had this checked out by your doctor, yet? You may need to switch to a different medication, or take something that will help prevent the excess acid. Nortriptyline is classified by the FDA as being a ...

I'm using gabapin nt tablet for suspected nerve compression. But i've been feeling very sleepy and tired all the time. Is it a side effect of the medicine? ## Gabapin-NT contains the active ingredients Gabapentin and Nortriptyline and yes, both of these drugs can cause drowsiness as side effects. Hi, I have been on Nortriptyline for a just over a year at 25 mg in the morning and 25 mg at night to help with my fibromyalgia/chronic pain condition, as some of the symptoms of my fibro were starting to return, e.g. extreme light sensitivity rendering me unable to open my eyes. The doctor has increased my dose to 25 mg in the morning and 50 mg at night, that was three days ago. Since then I have started itching all over. The itching moves around my body and is intense. All i am doing is scratching, I am also quite irritable. Plus i've had quite bad head pain on the left side and it feels like it's inside the center of my head rather than on the surface; it gets worse with straining of any kind or bending over. I can feel the pain throbbing with my pulse. This is starting to se...

I had taken nortriptyline for 10 days, but I had too many side effects so my Dr. weaned me off. Now 2 weeks later I'm better except for huge memory lapses. Has anyone else experienced this? ## No, that is not a typical side effect of taking this medication, or from stopping it, according to FDA reports. They are listed as typically including issues such as nausea, dizziness, headache, weight changes, mood swings, and dry mouth. Are you on any other medications? Has there been any change? ## I've lost 12 pounds because hard to swallow for 3 days ## Yes Nortriptyline caused significant memory impairment for me while taking it. The drug has a fairly long half life so may still be in your system after 2 weeks. It also takes time for your brain to adapt after stopping a medication. T...

I am on Nortriptyline 75 mg. My psychiatrist ordered it yesterday. She said it would help with my nicotine cravings as I want to cut back, not quit. My question is, can Nortriptyline be helpful in quitting smoking? ## It really depends on why you smoke. Some antidepressants have been shown to be helpful with smoking cessation, but they don't always work for everyone. Have you tried taking it yet, to see if it helps you? The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, mood changes, and weight changes. Are you on any other medications? How much do you smoke each day?

How long will it take for nausea to subside? I have been taking 20mgs a day for two days now and it is quite bad. ## Hello, Kellie! I am very sorry about the problem you're experiencing. That can be a normal side effect of this medication, as reported by the NIH, you may also experience dizziness, headache, mood swings and weight changes. They should start to improve, then go away entirely, once your body gets used to the medication, but that may take 4 to 5 weeks. Are you on any other medications?

I've been taking 50 mg of nortriptyline for chronic nerve pain for a few years now. Six days ago, my doctor increased the dosage to 75 mg. he wants me to call him in 2 weeks to let him know how I'm feeling. I haven't noticed a difference yet, as I'm still feeling the same. How long can be until I notice a difference? ## Hello, Coofoo! How are you? It may take 3 to 4 weeks, before the new dosage reaches its full level of efficacy in the body. The FDA classifies this medication as a tricyclic antidepressant and its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, mood swings and weight changes. Is there anything else I can help with? ## hopefully by that 2 weeks. what kind of nerve pain? if you notice any thing it will be very imperceptable to nothin...

Hi. I've been taking nortriptyline for 3 years now. I am 18 year old female. I originally started with only 10 mg and have slowly increased the dose over time to now i take 45mg per night. The reason i first had it was for nerve pain and also teenage depression (where i struggled to attend school). I consider myself as made very good progress over the past 3 years, the last 2 being at school. In 2014, i was only attending school 2-3 days per week, in 2015 i attended 3-4 days per week. And now in 2016, i have a good job and work about 45 hours per week, going to work every day. I also keep to a rigid fitness schedule with exercising 5 days per week for at least half an hour (either running 3.5 to 5km or doing Kayla Itsines workouts). And i have kept to this for all of the 2016 year s...

I took 7.5 mg of Zipiclone together with 15 mg of Aventyl (nortriptyline) at bedtime. They produced agitation especially in the back of my head and I could not sleep the entire night. What may be the interaction between these 2 medications? Thank you. I also took 50 mg of Paxil CR and 40 mg of Baclofen. Could they have confounded my problem?

Can Nortriptyline actually help Tinnitus caused by acoustic trauma? If so, how? ## Hi Jack, According to government studies, this medication can help with tinnitus, although results are going to vary for everyone. Here is a link to the study with more in depth information about its overall effectiveness: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8424470 Since this drug is technically an anti depressant, I am having trouble finding information about "how" it works for Tinnitus. Learn More: Nortriptyline Details If anyone else has more information regarding this topic, please post back. ## Tinnitus began a few weeks after I started taking Nortriptyline HCL. I don't think it could help tinnitus at all. Also, the medicine began melting in my throat causing pain and burning in my throat and chest,...

Female 67 years old diagnosed with severe o.a. of lumbar spine and hip who has involuntarily stopped Norco to treat pain. What are negative effects of treating pain with Suboxone while taking 100mg Nortriptiline at bedtime for depression? She lives a sedentary life w/o any exercise and a mitral valve that does not close completely with regurgitation and associated symptoms. ## Both medications can increase sedation, so she may experience a lot of drowsiness and dizziness, as listed by the FDA. Suboxone also does not always help everyone with pain, plus it carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause other side effects, such as nausea, dry mouth and constipation. Is she on any other medications?

I am 27 and have been having migraines since i was 10. I have been on everything for them and nothing helps. My new doctor put me on nortriptyline 10 mg before bed and im scared to take it because like i said before i have tried everything and nothing worked. I dont want another disappointment. Can anyone help me? ## Hello, Leah! How are you? I'm sorry about the problems you've experienced. No matter what we take a medication to treat, there is always a chance that it won't work, that's just the reality of medical science. There's no real exact guarantees that can ever be made. Sometimes, you do have to try multiple medications to find the one that works for you. When I suffered congestive heart failure over 6 years ago, many of the medications to lower my blood pres...

Has anyone experienced weakness in their legs? ## The FDA does report that as being a possible side effect of Nortriptyline. You may also experience nausea, dizziness, fatigue, blurred vision and dry mouth. If it severe, you may want to speak to your doctor as it could be that it's not the right medication for you, however, mild side effects are usually transient and go away with time, as your body gets used to a medication. Is there anything else I can help with?

I just started 25mg nortriptyline for migraine prevention. I was previously on amitriptyline for them and it worked so well, but I was a zombie, couldn't wake up in the morning and had gained 10 pounds. I was always hungry and never felt full. I am hoping that the noritriptyline will have less side effects (at least that's what my doctor tells me). Day 2 of not sleeping. I take the pill before bed and that must be the problem. Does anyone take it in the morning? I'm a little worried that taking it in the morning will still keep me up that night. Also, is 25mg a little high for a starting dosage? ## Hello, JaneCat! How are you? As to your starting dosage, you're not actually starting, you're just switching from one to the other, so you'd not start it at the same d...

i heard they should not and needed to be sure if it was safe for them to take ## Hello, Lonestar1975! How are you? It isn't that they cannot take it, but their doctor should be monitoring them, because it could affect their glycemic control, especially when they first start taking it and at any point the dosage is adjusted. Its other side effects, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include nausea, dizziness, dry mouth and headache. Is there anything else I can help with?
