Nitrofur Macr 100 Mg And Breastfeeding

Updated

I have been prescribed nitrofur macr 100 mg twice a day for seven. The label says not recommended while breastfeeding. Was this a mistake by the ER?

This definitely sounds like a mistake by the ER from my perspective. Have you already started taking it?

User guidelines for this medication note:

"You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Nitrofurantoin while you are pregnant. Do NOT take Nitrofurantoin if you are at term (38 to 42 weeks pregnant), if you are about to go into labor, or if you are in labor. Nitrofurantoin is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed infants younger than 1 month old while you are taking Nitrofurantoin. If your child is older than 1 month, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby."

Further details regarding breast feeding:

"Nitrofurantoin is excreted into human milk. Nitrofurantoin is considered compatible with breast-feeding by the American Academy of Pediatrics, although there is a theoretical risk of hemolytic anemia in neonates and G-6-PD-deficient infants. The manufacturer recommends that due to the potential for serious adverse effects in infants less than one month old, a decision should be made to discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother."

I hope this information helps ease some concerns! You should consider contacting the doctor though if these guidelines apply to you.

I was prescribed nitrofuratoin by the er doctor and my ob/gyn didn't change it or warm me bout any issues with it. Im 38 weeks pregnant. Is this safe or will it harm the fetus? They also have me on labetalol for PIH.
