New Treatment Option For Opioid Dependence

As you all know, opioid dependence is more common than the abuse of or dependence on any other type of prescription medication. In fact, nearly 2 million Americans are considered opioid dependent, yet only 40% receive treatment.

Currently, there are three FDA-approved medications indicated for the treatment of opioid dependence: methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone IV. In the buprenorphine category, there is Suboxone Film (a buprenorphine/naloxone combination), buprenorphine (generic) and a new option Zubsolv. ZUBSOLV (buprenorphine and naloxone) sublingual tablet (CIII) provides a new maintenance treatment option that offers unique advantages specifically designed to address treatment preferences expressed by patients. This may have the potential to improve patient adherence, thereby reducing relapse rates and improving successful patient outcomes.

ZUBSOLV is a controlled substance (CIII) because it contains buprenorphine, which can be a target for people who abuse prescription medicines or street drugs. Keep your ZUBSOLV in a safe place to protect it from theft. Never give your ZUBSOLV to anyone else; it can cause death or harm them. Selling or giving away this medicine is against the law.

Do not IV ZUBSOLV. Using ZUBSOLV in this manner may cause life-threatening infections and other serious health problems. It may also cause serious withdrawal symptoms such as pain, cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, anxiety, sleep problems, and cravings.

Thanks for taking a moment to share this information on Zubsolv.

I haven't heard much about it until reading your post, but it seems to me like it's just another brand of Suboxone (since it contains the same active ingredients).

None the less, it sounds like a viable alternative to Suboxone, Subutex, and/or Methadone, for those seeking other forms of treatment.

I agree with your comments but like you I am grateful for any new information.
I am a more than concerned when new medications are being introduced just in time to be a fill in for older meds. We have seen over and over that 20 years after the best drug ever was introduced it is taken off the market due to serious long term complications.
