New Opana Is Out Now - March 15

Updated

I got my new Opana Prescription this week and it is the new formulation. The old ones were six sided and the new one is round.

The new formulation, that the FDA approved, is supposed to be the same quality as the old Opana we are used to. I hope so.

I am going to include the links to the articles that discuss this at the bottom, the latest article is directly from the makers of Opana and is from February.

The old stock of Opana is all supposed to be gone from the shelves by now and the pharmacists are all supposed to be using the new formulation.

Let us know here how you think the new stuff is working for you. Is it the same as the old stuff? IS there a coating on the new stuff that changes its effectiveness like the way the new formulation of Oxycontin did when it came out in 2010? Let us know.

Mine only started a few days ago so it is too early to say. It is the Opana long acting. They had to change it to stop people from crushing and abusing them.

Let us see if it works.

here are the article links;

This one is from Endo Pharmaceutical directly, the company that makes the drug;

Crush-Resistant Formulation of Opana ER® Approved by the FDA

Here is the second one ;

Endo Announces FDA Approval of a New Formulation of Opana® ER Designed To Be Crush-Resistant

Hope it helps everyone!

Peace, Keith

Oh Roni, so sorry. That stinks. I know how hard it is to find a good pain med for us chronic pain patients. It is what makes me so mad at these people who abuse them, break them down, sell them, etc. hurts the rest of us, forces the drug makers into these kinds of actions. Just like OxyContin before (that made me sick and didn't even work, didn't even know they switched that one so I thought I was in a major CRPS flare and was suffering horribly for almost a month! Dr nor pharmacist told me!!! Arghhhhhhhhhhhhh

Problem is the abusers are a tiiiiny minority! The average chronic pain patient does NOT abuse their pain medications, and frankly would prefer to not be on ANY medication if possible. We don't get high or a buzz from them, at best we get a little relief from our horrible 24/7 battle with pain.

We even take as little medication as possible, especially opiates, because of the side effects; constipation, drowsiness or insomnia, dopiness, inability to handle machinery like cars sometimes, memory loss, just to name a few.

Roni, I hope u can find a other opiod agonist that works for you as well as or better than opana. I have been lucky so far. No stomach issues and it seems to be working nearly as well as the old version. I have had to increase my oxycodone 5 mg, that I take for breakthrough pain, but so far only one more per day.

Have u tried taking it with food by chance?

Peace

K

I'm very sorry to learn that people are having problems with the new formulation of Opana.

We had many people that complained, when they changed Oxycontin, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I think that in their efforts to prevent abuse, the manufacturers sometimes forget that it still needs to work, too.

Has anyone else tried it and do you have any experiences to share with our site users?

Got mine today, it did make me a little sick-not to bad. What I experianced most was being shakey, aggravated feeling, VERY moody? Don't have the upset stomach like I did when the oxys were changed over to the OPs I'm going to give it a week to see if my body adjusts to them before I call my PM doc. These just seem like they should be generic to me anyway, but NO they change them to crap and we still have over a $700 bill. Thanks ENDO. If they keep making me fieel I'll endo lost me. Will keep all updated. Really hope everyone has a great evening ;)

Its NOT the Docs that are full of it, its the goverment and the pharmacys-people that were abusing the old opanas didnt know how strong they were and some starting OD'ing. Plus pharmacys were getting robbed for opanas. Here in Ohio anyway.FMGIM

Has anyone read any replies on the topic of the new opana on other sites? If so, are they getting the same reaction to the new formulation or are they different?

Does anyone have any links to them?

I don't mean links about people wanting to know how to crush them or snort them or trade them for Justin Bieber CD's, but real patients taking them for pain.

Thanks in advance

PainGuy-I agree with your post that some abusers are messing meds up for us chronic pain suffers. I just started my new opana today, one pill so far and have had some problems. Irritaed, shakey, bad mood and a small problem with my stomach. Not as bad as when they oxys were changed over. As I said in another post-I'm going to try and give this a week....maybe my body will adjust to this. Must be some type of filler in the new opanas that are making me feel this way? Not so sure. I also had to take an extra break through med myself because the new opanas didn't seem to work as well. Time will tell. Hope your well. GOD Bless my friend.

Roni-Sorry your getting so sick from the new opana meds. When you said, what a waste of money...your NOT kidding. I mean I have insurance BUT! If it dosent come in a generic form then I have to pay more, more co-pay and it's not cheap!. These pills in my state anyway, (Ohio) are between $600-$700 for 60 pills if you dont have insurance. I do agree, Endo will lose some business ($$) like oxycotin did. They need to understand that some of us just can't do those damn fillers!

Roni, hope you feel better and hope your PM gives you something to help your pain.

I am very sorry for you guys and gals that have chronic pain all the time...I am a very hard worker and have abused my body with roofing and other physical labor..I have a high tolerance to pain but I do buy opiates or trade work when possible because they are so expensive....its easier now to buy them on the street than pay a doctor though but ppl are getting very greedy..I just want to stress that its not about ppl "abusing" them as much as it is ppl in higher places making dumb selfish inconsiderate decisions...we were born with receptors in our brain for opiates it should not be this much of a struggle or as expensive as it comes from the poppy plant(infanite supply) to get them and have a descent day...hope people smarten up for your sake please understand people make dumb decisions everyone that buys on the street is not at fault...I watch my lady cringe in pain half the month every month..in tears many times..I took her to the er b4 waited from 10pm to 7am the doctor left after multiple tests without notice or results..the nurse had to make a couple calls to figure put what "dub" was dysfunctional uteral bleeding...wtf and she has a high white blood cell count...she was billed for 3000 dollars and she was prescribed something along the lines of generic toradol(torolac?) Ill deal with my pain I can't stand to see her suffer...I hear canada has better healthcare plan to suit everyones budget..I hate to leave though..thankyou for reading hope you all agree with me..everything can be abused from tv to mcdonalds to water if u have a problem with a substance get help and accept your ignorance..depression..that its YOUR fault mostly..again thank you all for reading God bless and help us all..good luck to u that do not believe in such

Does anyone know what is in the "plastic" that people are talking about? I have so many allergies to normal things and something isn't agreeing with me.
I got my prescription filled yesterday. Opana ER 20mg x 3/day. I take them as directed and intact. They are not working and I am throwing each one up about 15 minutes after taking them so of course pain is unbearable and withdrawal is in full swing along with a horrible headache.
What medicine would I ask my Dr to change me too? I don't know what is comparable.
Thank you

Just FYI that the new opana ers suck just like oxycontins. I was on oxycontin 60s until they changed the formula and it no longer worked. My dr had to change all his patients to opana which worked wonderful. Just got my new opanas four days ago and am experiencing withdrawals now. Cannot believe after Endo made all this money off of people who used to take oxycontins that they would be stupid enuf to change it also. Going to be getting on another med so I don't waste money on new opanas and hope Endo loses money for changing formula and leaving people screwed. Does anyone know how to get coating off? Even tried chewing and still in pain and feel awful.

I just got my script filled on Monday 4/2/2012, and it was the new Opana ER 10mg. I had NO IDEA they were changing. I had no warning from the Dr or Pharmacy. I took 1, an hour later, my stomach was a little tight, and it was not as effective for my pain. I waited a couple more hours so I could take another, and that finally knocked down my pain, BUT within an hour, my stomach was in a big, searing cramp. Thats when I hit the internet and found out they changed the formula. I went to the pharmacist to see if I could get more info, she had no idea. The rep told her it was just a color and shape change. I am devastated. This was the only drug Ive found that eliminated pain that didnt leave me in a cloud. I was pain free and lucid. I made an emergency appt with my Dr tomorrow to beg him to switch me to IR's, its my only hope. Does anyone know if they changed the IR's? I honestly do not know what I will do if he wont switch me. I can't live like this, and I shouldnt have to. From what I understand, the driving force behind this is that they can extend their patent because of this change. That means no generics, and major money for Endo. Greed has just hurt a lot of people. I am sorry for all. Any info on IR's appreciated.

I am a pain patient for CRPS. I am virtually panicking on the basis of what happened last month. I tried to switch to Oxycontin from Opana, because the Opana was making me a bit tired. I had taken Oxy in the past. However I had to go back to Opana after a day as the new type of OP oxy made had more side effects, ie nausea, fatigue and was less effective on pain. If that was the case with the OP, will I be likewise effected by the new Opana? I do not know what to do, as I already take a fair amount of 30 mg oxy IR. Is the only solution to take all IR pills?

I had to go back to my Dr in tears today. I gave the new Opana's a 6 day try and it was awful.
He put me on Oxycontin and I have never taken it before, not a high dose.
The new medicine (oxycintin) says OP on one side, are these generic?? They were given to me from pharmacist in the original Oxycontin bottle, but why do they say "OP"?
Thanks for information, I am concerned about taking a medicine that has such a stigma attached.
The other alternative is a medicine called "MS contin"

Hi, I experianced the same effect that you did on this new opana. Shaky, annoyed ect.. My husband said I was being "mean"? Say what? lol. I have so much pain I dont need anymore problems-I swear I don't. I think if I stay on this new opana I'll end up getting a divorce! Him divorcing me! That happens and I promise you this...I will SUE Endo for ruining my life! Because it's endo that changed this med because of drug abusers and Im having problems taking it-AND now mental issues..WTF?

"Change meds." I needed to stop the stupid crap my doctor gave me because she was afraid of the DEA, "knocking on her door." Which they DID anyway because she kept crap records! I am a three-time, cancer, 27 surgeries, including back. The medication I had was not working and my new doctor said,"That is not right and we will fix it." He gave me 10mg Opana IR and 20mg ER, twice a day. I am MISERABLE. They are barely affecting me and the ER are not even dissolving and I see them in my STOOL! I put one in water to see what would happen. 48 hours later, it was a solid "stone" with a rubbery coating around it, i.e., in 48 hours, it did not dissolve. No wonder it just comes right back out. I do not feel "high". The DEA has made the new rules FOR the doctors. People that want drugs still get them. Those of us that suffer and depend on our physicians for help are being "told" how to feel, how long to feel it, and what to do to "not" feel that way. The problem there is obvious. How do you explain to your doctor when they are programmed to call you a "drug seeker" if you so much as say, "It hurts here." I need another cancer surgery and I just cannot do it. If it spreads - I guess my only option is Death with Dignity. I want a life! Not a nursing home and wheel chair. But, you cannot be happy in your own home in America - unless you do it illegally. Until the patient AND the doctor stand up for our rights together, we are doomed. Cancer will kill everyone because the only time you will be out of pain is when hospice decides you are on your last breath (YES, they don't want you to become "addicted" or "high" when you are about to die!!). F*** them.

I agree with what this post says...please don't assume that because the new Opana doesn't work, we are all addicts just chasing a high! I'm a legitimate chronic pain patient who has used several different types of medications. Unfortunately, I lost my insurance and I had to go on patient assistance. I'm taking 40 mgs and it barely brings my pain down to a 7 (with breakthrough meds)...I'm frustrated and want to be "me" again, not someone who has to lay flat by noon. Going to try and change medication. Good luck to everyone who REALLY needs pain relief.

I called Endo pharmaceuticals and told them how dangerous this coating is. I put it under water for an hour and it balled up into plastic. When I called Endo they told me it is made of polymer which is plastic. I had to give myself an enema because my stomach was so extended after 5 days and hurt so bad. Call them and complain. I have had such bad GI reactions to the new Opana, that I had to ask my Dr. for the Fentanyl Patch to use as a "break" from the Opana 2-3 days a week, so my stomach can get back in order each week. The patch does not work as good as oral meds, but my GI tract needs a break from the New Opana onlslaught of reflux, nausea, vomiting, burping, bloating, just to name a few. It's a shame that a few morons who abuse this crap ruin it for legitimate users.

I sent an email to Endo corporate, and actually got a response from them that I was the ONLY ONE that has complained about the new formulation.

If you are having problems with the new Opana ER, you should ask your doctor to write you a script for the generic Opana ER that is manufactured by Actavis. A lot of people are unaware that a generic version exists.

Also, Endo created the new abuse proof forms to help them maintain their patents. The Opana ER patent was going to expire in 2013 and Endo needed a way to sell Opana ER as a name brand or else lose lots of money. So, they reformulated Opana ER and received a new patent. Why do you think there are so many legal battles going on between Endo and generic medicine makers.

Also, since your so worried about my health, I am taking the generic Opana ER manufactured by Actavis and it works GREAT! Also my information came right from the U.S. patent office. Here is the link to the INTAC technology patent.

Ok, maybe I had poor word choice. Dose not matter though. The facts are the new Opana ER contains a lot more chemicals than the old version. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. And my opinion is the new ones are terrible and ineffective. The response a person has to a certain medicine or formulation thereof is mostly related to their genes. If new Opana ER works for you, that is great. But, it is wrong to assume the people who dislike the new Opana ER are all drug abusers/addicts.

Your wrong James... There is no plastic in Opana!
Read the manufacturers data sheet with the ingredients...
And change meds if you don't like it, there are plenty of other drugs out there! You need to get your facts straight. Where did your info come from? Mine came from Endo!

Was this helpful? 0

To James:
There is no "plastic" in Opana! If it was plastic, then it would go right thru you, and do nothing!
I have the manufacturer's bottle with ingredients, and a 2 page document all about the medication information.
So, you sir, need to get your facts straight before making an ass out of yourself! Now, some of the binders did change, but none are plastics of any kind. The worse thing that would happen, is a allergic reaction to this, but the meds would still work... So... change to something else if that is the case...don't make ignorant claims!!! Enough said!
