Neurolgia Pain In Teeth

Updated

I wonder does anyone else suffer with ongoing everyday pain in their teeth/tooth caused by nerve endings in gums, it took a very long time to get diagnosis for this, and a few extractions by dentist before doctors discovered it was a nerve pain and not a dental pain, I have had this for several years now, everyday in life, its like having a toothache, I had a back tooth removed when it first began as I was insistent it was a toothache, but it only moved into the next tooth, my dentist refused to remove anymore teeth as xray showed there was no problem with my teeth, and the one removed was a very healthy tooth.
Ive been to hospitals, see Professors, had RadioFreqency carried out on it going through my cheek, with no success, as wrong nerve was burned off, my GP says it will go away one day by itself, do I believe that, not at all would you?

Hello, Maureen! How are you feeling? I'm very sorry about the problem that you're having.

Why aren't they treating the neuralgia, then? There are several medications available that can help with that type of nerve pain, such as Gabapentin and Pregabalin, both of which are anticonvulsants that have been proven to be effective at helping many people with nerve pain.

They can cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, weight changes and mood swings, but are still generally safer than narcotics and you take them regularly to prevent the pain, rather than letting it set it and then taking something to try to get rid of it, like you do with regular analgesics.

Did they offer you any treatment options?

Hello Maureen! Assuming that the diagnosis is correct, then you are suffering from a form of neuropatic pain (fancy term for pain caused by nerv problem). It can come up unannounced or it can be caused by other problems (diabetes is one of them). Like someone said here before, there is medication for that. I do not live in the USA so I don´t know all the medication available but Pregabalin is (as far as know) the only one proven to be effective in that. Gabapentin and many others that we have in my country can also be used but it´s an off label use (I am telling you this because of insurance purposes). I want to believe that the doctors who diagnosed your situation have not prescribed you anyof these medications for a specific reason (maybe you take other medicine, or you suffer form an other illness that prevents you from taking these meds). But you can always ask for a second opinion.

My regards

Hi Maureen, I think I'm going through the same problem, I have a pain so bad it's unbearable! It's a pain that it's so hard to describe to my doc. I went to the dentist and he said it has nothing to do with sensitive teeth. I had x-rays and nothing comes up. I can eat ice cream and other cold stuff and I will be fine till about a half hour or so later when I get that pain that won't stop or give me a break for about an hour. It's the worst pain in the world! My Dr put me on Carbamazepine and I wanna say I think it works but I'm really not sure? I'm also on lortab 10's and that don't even help! It's awful but maybe you might ask your Doc about it and it might work for you? Good luck to you and I hope they can find something for the both of us.
