Need Relief For A Hubby In So Much Pain

Updated

I was wondering if some one could help me? My husband has hurt his back really bad and also tore his ACL in his right knee at the same time! He had the surgery for his knee about a year ago. He recently re-injured his knee again. He was taking percocet for a very long time, but decided he did not want to be on a narcotic any longer. The doctor then gave him a prescription of Tramadol 50 mg. My husband is 6'6" tall and weighs just about 255lbs. One 50 mg of Tramadol doesn't work for him and the doctor will not change him. He began taking 2 at a time and it worked wonders for him, the problem is, he ran out and the doctor will not refill because he took 2 with out the MD permission. I told the doctor that it was ridiculous, my husband is trying to be honest with you and told him it wasn't working with one pill, called the office and you wouldn't help him, but anyway, he is out and in so much pain, what can I do to make him more comfortable until I find him a new doctor?

Sorry to hear about your husband - This may or may not work well for him since it sounds like he has a more serious injury, but the last time my wife had a migraine she took her usual Advil (does not like Excedrin or anything with caffeine in it), but then I also rubbed Peppermint oil on her affected areas and she reported that it really helped her a lot. I don't remember where we read this but apparently Peppermint oil was reported to work as well as acetaminophen in some cases, only it's all natural. Like I said it may or may not be a viable supplement to his existing treatments but it may at least help. There are also some other natural products reported to help with pain and swelling, such as Arnica, but I'm not an expert or anything. Just trying to throw some ideas out there.

Total BS about the doctor by the way, it just sounds like they are trying to cover their ass since they are probably monitored to see how many pain prescriptions they give out per year. While the idea behind that is good it's gotten way out of hand to the point where legitimate pain patients such as your husband are withheld proper treatment. I mean seriously, at 6'6" 255 there is no way that a single dose will work when compared to the average body size. I hope this helps even a little bit, and more than that, I hope you guys are able to figure something out soon!

Thank you so much for the advice. I will definitely try to do that see if it helps any, He took 2 aleve and that did not come anywhere close to the pain.

Oh, and this doctor got an earful out of me! LOL!! I understand also but this has become real ridiculous for the individuals that are seriously injured and in pain and actually need this medicine!!! The sad part about it, is Tramadol is not considered a narcotic in our state!!! If he is having trouble no, I can't even begin to think how it is going to affect him when they do change it to a narcotic in our state!!!!

I hate that these pain seekers go out and do this and don'y realize they are ruining for people who truly need this medicine!! I understand addiction is a dis3ease, but damn get some help then!! I couldn't imagine having to seek out medicine from doctor to doctor just to function properly!! And trust me, I have RA and have to take medicine every day of my life just to be able to move around and function and I HATE IT!

Thanks for the advice!

petlover120, my suggestion would be that he try seeing a different doctor. If his current one is going to be this unhelpful, then he may be better off seeking treatment elsewhere.

And while it has changed several times, since its introduction, Tramadol is not currently classified as a narcotic anywhere in the U.S.

With the FDA always evaluating new information, this could change again tomorrow, but for now it isn't.

Are there any other questions or comments?
