My Chantix Nightmare

Updated

Took Chantix 4 years ago and have remained smoke free. Wish I didn't take it. I was always considered patient, mild mannered and generally a nice person. I noticed in week 11 of taking Chantix that I was becoming different. Noticeable enough that I stopped taking it. Since then I'm worse. I'm mean, angry, paranoid, have fits of rage and regular thoughts of suicide. Fortunately I'm composed enough not to act upon them. I have little attention span and find myself staring off for no reason thinking of nothing. I have a beautiful wife of 5 years this week who is miserable with me and she should be as I'm miserable with myself. I find no joy in anything and am terrified I'm gonna lose my wife. My doctor is less than helpful, probably afraid I'll sue him. I have no interest in this. I need help and don't know where to turn. All I know for sure is that Chantix made me this way

Hi, Dan! Sorry about the problems that you're having.

These types of medications do have an affect on brain chemicals and so does age, so it could actually be a combination of both that has caused the problem. Chantix may have caused the initial change, then your body was unable to balance back out again, due to age related changes. There is also a chance that it's entirely related to age and not the Chantix, at all….or vice-versa.

Learn more Chantix details here.

However, what type of doctor are you seeing? If it's a general practitioner, he may not know how to help.

Have you considered seeing a specialist?

You should ask your doctor to refer you to someone that can help.

hi, I also have had and still have the problems you are dealing with among others. it has been 2 years since I quit smoking with chantix and I still have sever rage and depression issues but like you I can control acting on them usually.
I don't know if I will ever be completely back to normal but I have found that intense weight lifting helps calm me.
in the early days my doc prescribed buspar which greatly curbed my rages. might give that a try.

My boyfriend, who was wonderful, started taking Chantix about a month ago. In the last 3 weeks I don't know who this devil is! He has broken up with me, had fits of rage, isn't speaking to Luis children. Is up and down. His decisions change about major things like his hidden, his career, his life etc from moment to moment. He is seclusion himself, spending time alone, withdrawing etc. we thought it was the pressure of the recent holidays and a lot of things on both of our plates causing stress and the breakup, buti honestly don't even recognize this man..... Even the tone of his voiceis different. We always worked things out. Now he wants no part of anybody....me, his children, his nephew, even his sister who he loves dearly. He's making irrational decisions and all over the place. The more I read here, iam wondering if it is the effect of this Chantix?
