Mother Took Too Much Xarelto- 40mg

Updated

Please answer if we should be worried about my mother accidentally taking her 20mg. of Xarelto and two hours later taking another 20 mg? She is 83 and on it for 2 years because of afib. Thx For a fast reply, I can't sleep worrying about her!

@Kj,

Sorry to hear about your mother accidentally taking more than prescribed. I hope she's feeling alright? From what I've read online, the maximum recommended dose of Xarelto is 20 mg once daily. I would strongly encourage you to call her doctor about this if it's not too late to see what he/she suggests as well in terms of how your mother would go about continuing her regular dosing regimen and what side effects could arise as a result of taking too much. Depending on your mother's reaction to the overdose, I'd also consider calling local emergency medical support or poison control at 1 (800) 222-1222 for an immediate response in the event that this has caused her harm in anyway.

i'm on warfarin and i'd never take it straight out of the bottle... i always use a pill minder to make sure i get my daily dose but don't get it twice! they're super cheap, less than a dollar. you fill it once a week and then you can be sure you're taking your proper dose on the correct day. i have my INR checked once a month plus with warfarin if your INR is too high you can eat a lot of vitamin k rich foods to bring it down or they can give you a vit k shot. i don't trust xarelto and will never replace warfarin with it because there is no antidote to overdosing. maybe you should see about getting your mother's INR checked.

Try a weekly pill container or if she can remember to call you each day to notify you try the phone. Sometimes I forget and I count the the pills and the day I started to take them to check. If she has a reliable neighbor, perhaps she can help. My experience with Xarelto was good but the longer I took the more uneasy I became about hidden problems such as internal bleeding. Thankfully I was taken off 3 months after an ablation.

I have a friend whose elderly mother started doing this--getting confused about her medications in general, when to take them, forgetting to take them, etc. My friend purchased one of the many types of "pill packs" available in any pharmacy that others here have talked about and would set up her mother's medications for each day on a weekly basis. She would also call her mom daily at whatever times were necessary to make sure the meds were being taken and also not "over-taken." Since her mother only lived about 20-30 minutes away, she was also able to stop in regularly to check those pill packs and make sure her mom was actually TAKING her meds and also that they weren't disappearing too fast. When it eventually became apparent that, even with this setup, her mother was too confused to be responsible for her own medications, an alternative living arrangement became necessary for mom. But if your mom is capable of taking her own medications as long as they're clearly set up for her, this system should work. If you don't live close enough to do this, you may need to enlist the help of other family, friends, neighbors or whoever can give her some help with this. Or you may need to handle this over the phone if her meds aren't too complicated and she is clear-headed enough. Overall, this seems to be a common problem when dealing with aging parents. But, to be fair, I've been taking a number of medications for many health issues since I was in my mid-forties (over 15 years) and learned very quickly that, especially when taking multiple prescriptions, it's not a good idea to depend on just our memory to make sure we take medications on schedule, no matter what our age! :-) Blessings to you--you sound like a very loving daughter. Your mother is fortunate to have you!
