I have cervical spinal stenosis. I have used fentanyl patches and lollipops in the past to control my pain. It is very strong but can be given in very small doses and due to her age I doubt a pain specialist would give her any grief over it. Dilaudid also works well for me but I am a poor metaboliser so not many opiatess work for me. You might want to ask about either one of these pain meds.

Yes, the Fentanyl patches are also what I would suggest asking her doctor about, it is a very strong narcotic, over 80 times stronger than the Morphine, so the patches come in either 0.25mcgs or 0.50mcgs. They are time released and each one lasts for 72 hours.

It is, however, a narcotic, so she may experience side effects, include: nausea, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

You can learn more about it here:

Does anyone else have any advice to add?

I worked for over 25 years with a prolapsed disc,in 2010 I had L4/L5 back surgury for a partial(90%) of the offending disc,It was found that I have extensive & degenerative sciatic nerve damage,my pain level 0-10 based on a seven day period is never below a 7 and most times feels like a 10 & climbing, I REALLY have begged the surgeon to cut the nerve, this would paralyse me from the waist down, but at least I would be pain free. I Have to use TRANSTEC 52.5 micrograms/h transdermal patch's, these are not working at all, is there any other medication that I can take along with the patches?

Re: Steve B. (# 3) Expand Referenced Message

I'm so sorry Steve. In 2010 I had a three level laminectomies and 5 months later a three-level fusion. They cut the obturator nerve in my right leg and my left leg has such incredible sciatica that I can't even give a number on the 0 to 10 scale. I am an RN and got hurt on the job working my butt off trying to start a new surgical Department. I didn't sit down all day and was at work for sometimes 14 to 15 hours. Of course, I checked out and kept working because they wouldn't pay for overtime. Because of the Oxycontin and oxycodone crisis my workers comp, Sedgewick, for Scripps in San Diego, CA, where I worked will not pay for my medication anymore. Can you believe it! They will pay for a pain doctor but not what the pain doctor recommends! That's absurd and abusive. Downright negligent! I had a CT myelogram and at level L5 - S1 I have 3-4 nerves compressed along with basically end-stage everything disease. Now I am bedridden. Believe , when I see cancer patients I envy them because they have imminent death to look forward to, an end to their pain.. My pain doctor has me on Oxycontin 20 mg twice a day and oxycodone 10 mg four times a day. That barely gets me through activities of daily living. My life went from a fairytale to a living hell. Yes. A nightmare. Now I can't afford the Oxycontin because at Costco and other places it's between $300 and $470. That's why I'm now bedridden. I would ask your Doctor for Oxycontin and oxycodone in your situation or fentanyl patches with oxycodone for breakthrough pain three times a day. These are very strong meds so be careful and follow them exactly as your doctor prescribes. I am so sorry for you and others who have been victimized by orthopedic surgeons who don't know what they're doing if they are still doing more than one level fusions. To all those who may be considering back surgery, have a neurosurgeon do it. As an RN who dissected human bodies and studied anatomy and physiology approximately four times, it is much easier to know the bones than the nerves. Have a Neurosurgeon do your work and turn your back on the Orthopedics. I'm sure my Scripps orthopedic surgeon bought himself a nice new car, a house or a big long family vacation with the money he got from my surgery and taking away my beautiful, innocent life. My only goal in life was to do Divine Mercy Nursing, meaning to treat every person or patient as your mother or God. My last month at my job I was Nurse of the Month. Do not get fusion surgery. Hang upside down on an inversion table. Do anything but surgery. Good luck and I'll pray for you.
