My son was told by his GI doctor to do a clean out due to constipation & drank the whole prep 8 hrs ago & nothing has happened at all. Should I be concerned? ## I think it would be best to consult his doctor, he may be dealing with some type of instruction, if this medication didn't help. It usually doesn't take that long to work, and the FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, cramps, gas, and diarrhea. Has there been any change?

I am very concerned about a investigation that was recently aired this past week on 6 abc news about a group of parents coming forward about their young children using Miralax and it may be causing neurological and psychological issues due to small amounts of a toxic ingredient found in antifreeze as well. My sons pediatrician has been prescribing a cap full of Miralax a day for his severe constipation since he was 2. For two years I trusted his doctor for everything. My son still is not properly toilet trained and they prescribed more of a dosage of Miralax. My baby has been showing severe signs of aggression, anger, hitting, hyperactive at times, stuttering his words and not being able to comprehend his behavior when that way. Then all of a sudden back to being ok again. This has been...

I was just told by my gastroenterologist to start taking miralax. I have taken it for two days and I now have diarrhea. Is this normal when you first start taking it? ## Yes, that can be a normal side effect, according to the FDA, since this is a stool softener. Other side effects may include nausea, bloating, and cramping. Has there been any change or improvement?

I've been on miralax for 4 months and want to stop it tonight but I'm afraid I'm going to be constipated is it wise to just stop taking it? ## According to ehow.com, "Miralax has no harsh side effects in comparison to other options available. Most laxatives artificially stimulate nerves in the colon. Long-term use of harmful laxatives can cause your bowels to forget how to work on their own; whereas Miralax is non-habit forming and can be used long-term with no concern for permanent damage." That said, I would personally feel safe stopping the medication whenever need be. I haven't read any information linking this drug to withdrawal symptoms so you should be good to go on that end as well. If constipation occurs, I think it would be wise to invest in digestive e...

Any suggestions how to stop using Miralax? I was having constipation issues for last 6-7 years. Doctor suggested Miralax. For last 15 months I am taking 1 dose (17 gr) once day. Although it works, I am scared I will get dependant and that eventually it will stop working. I noticed some slight puffines under my eyes lately. I am also afraid on some impact on my kidneys. I eat mostly - 90% fruit and vegies, very little meat - only fish and chicken, I drink at least 2 l of water daily, do my daily walking. Eating limited amount of bread - only whole wheat. I watch very carely WHAT I eat. No ice cream, no cookies, no beef, no rice, very ltd potatoes, no pasta, no chocolate, no cakes, no pastries. I do everything by the book, I tried Metamucil, but my stool with it is too large and it cost m...

I just had a child on the 10th and the brilliant nurse at the hospital told me to take Miralax when I got home to help move my first bowl movement. Needless to say it transferred to my breastfed newborn and now neither one of us is happy. How long will it take to get out of both our systems? It's been 3 days and it doesn't look like there's a light at the end of this tunnel. ## Hey, first off, congratulations on your new baby! Second, sorry to hear about what you both have been going through! I should say first and foremost that if your infant is having diarrhea then you should let the pediatrician know ASAP since it could be considered a medical emergency for the baby (they can get dehydrated very fast at such a young age). As far as the Miralax goes, there is fairly limite...

I was told I have visceral hypersensitivity without ever having any testing to rule out other possibilities. I suffer from constipation but the stool never reaches my rectum. It stops above the colon. I only have pain when my bowels get full (fecal loading). I don't get sick or anything from eating. I believe there is something wrong with my bowels, but they are not blocked. When I get so full of stool I end up in emergency and they don't offer anything but an x-ray and say yes you are full and send me home. I have pkd stage 4 and my so called specialist has me taking miralax twice daily which gives me diarrhea and drives my blood pressure through the roof. I don't buy into the visceral hypersensitivity. Does anybody have any feedback? ## Hello, Brenda! How are you? I'm ...

I have a very important question. I was injured in 2005 and I take oxycodone/Tylenol 10/325 1 tablet 4 times a day, well it causes me to be horribly constipated so my Dr. told me to use miralax and to take as many doses up to 16 caps in 1 day. So the other day I took 9 doses then I got called in for a random urine test and it came back showing no oxycodone in my system even though I took it the night before, so I need to know did the miralax clean that out of my system?

I changed meds for issues regarding HRT and at first it caused major constipation... My doctor told me to take Miralax , so I did a couple of times... It relieved the symptoms of constipation, but now, a week after the last dose of Miralax, I'm still having incontinence.. When will this stop? ## Hello, Sunny! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problem you're having. Has there been any change, yet? This medication can cause diarrhea, as well as bloating and abdominal cramping, according to the FDA reports, but it is odd that it would continue over a week later. What medication did you switch to? Have you informed your doctor?

I started taking miralax three days ago because of very bad constipation (impacted stool?) and two days later thankfully a long stool came out. But today when I tried to poop, nothing came out! Is there still impacted stool inside me? Did the miralax lose effectiveness? Should I increase the miralax dosage? ## Hello, Tom! How are you doing? I'm very sorry about the problem you're having. It would be best to stick with the recommended dosage, unless your doctor instructs otherwise. Do you have any idea what's causing your constipation? Are you on any medications? Have you changed anything in your diet, recently? The FDA lists the typical side effects of Miralax as possibly including nausea, bloating, abdominal cramping and diarrhea. ## Pacman, how long have you suffered sever...

I used MiraLax for my colonoscopy prep yesterday. Mixed 238 grams with 64 oz of Lemon-Lime Gatorade G2. I have have 5 of these tests in the past 25 years and this was the best tasting but after 6 of the 8 glasses of 8 oz mixture got very nauseous and threw up 5 times. I was supposed mix another 32 oz later but there was no way I couldn't take any more, canceled my apointment. Feeling about 75% better now after 12 hours.

Blood pressure usually low. Went to 200/110 at procedure then 180/. Next day 160/88 plus headache. Next day 179/80 and headache. First headache after started miralax ## Hello, Boops! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problem you're having. Yes, I just recently found an updated FDA informational listing that lists severe high blood pressure as a rare side effect of Miralax. It likely means you should stay away from it in the future and use something else. Other side effects may possibly include excessive thirst, abdominal bloating, nausea and indigestion. How are you doing, now?

I took 68 grams (4 caps) of Miralax today because the colonoscopy procedure that I will have (this is two days before the pocedure). I had to use the restroom after 5 hours. Is that normal? I thought that Miralax would work at least the day after. Thanks ## Sounds kinda strange, was it really runny and did you have to keep making trips? ## Hello, Rob45! How are you? It can really vary from person to person, much of it depends on your body, your normal diet, your fluid intake, other medications you may be taking, your overall health and etc. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Miralax as possibly including nausea, flatulence, stomach/abdominal cramping and diarrhea. It would be best, however, to contact your doctor, as they may want you to take an extra dose, since this occurred. I...

My baby is 17 months old and I only have miralax that says it expired March 2013 and it's February 2015 ## Hi Lakisha, According to consumer reviews on Amazon, MiraLAX laxative powder is reported to have a 6 month shelf life. And while I realize some medications are still deemed safe to take after the expiration date, I would still encourage you to get a new one since you're using it on a 17 month old baby who's system may be more sensitive to any slight degradation in the product. I hope this helps!

I took Miralax the last 2 days and feel absolutely horrible. I was up all night, my stomach aches so bad and I just want to know how long this is going to last? Is there anything I can do to make the stomach pains stop? ## Hi Liz, Sorry to hear about how you're feeling on Miralax. From what I could tell by looking online, things like abdominal cramping are considered to be a common side effect of Miralax. So it may just be that you have to wait it out until the medication is completely out of your body. Unfortunately I couldn't find any specific details on the half life of Miralax. And without that, there's no telling how long it will actually take to leave your body. In the meantime though, I know peppermint essential oil is recognized for helping to ease stomach pain.... a...

in prepping for a colonoscopy, i had to half the large bottle of miralax to mix with liquid. large bottle is 8.3, so i went to half that and realized the large bottle contains 12 oz, not 8.3 as labeled.....why???? they say that the 17oz lid has 14 servings (8.3) but i measured out the 14 servings in the lid, and there is still more than 8.3...so do i prep with 8.3 oz or the whole bottle (which everyone assumes is 8.3!!) ## Hello, Jan! How are you? If they told you to use the whole bottle, then that is what you should do, but please double check with your doctor to be sure. I've not seen anyone else mention this, so it seems very odd. The FDA classifies this as being a laxative and its typical side effects may possibly include stomach pain, bloating, diarrhea and dizziness. Is there ...

My dad has been on Jevity 1.5 since receiving a Peg tube in February. Most recently, he has complaints of constipation, and digestive issues. He has seen his doctor about this situation, and was recommended to take Miralax. He takes Miralax, but still remains constipated and bloated. Is there anyone else who has or knows of anyone who has these issues? If so, what are they taking or any recommendations to help with the issues?? ## Yes, it is pretty potent with the amount of nutrients it contains and has been known to cause those types of issues in some people that are on it, as well as nausea. He should speak to his doctor, again. They may need to prescribe something stronger to help with these issues, if the Miralax isn't doing it. Does anyone else have any ideas of what might help?

I took Miralax daily for 7 days after a bad bout of constipation and stopped after it made my stools too soft. It's been 5 days since I took it and my stools are still very irregular- they're sticky and long, and far too soft. I normally have very hard stools. I've been eating healthy and plenty but I haven't gone much since Friday morning, and I normally go each morning. I'm bloated and gassy and I don't know if the Miralax is to blame or if it's something else? ## Hello, Lana! How are you? I am very sorry about the problem you're having. Did your doctor tell you to take it for 7 days? And what kinds of foods are you eating? If you've suddenly changed your diet to try to eat healthier, since you were having this problem, that could actually be creati...

I'm very nervous about starting the liquid Miralax as in the past with a colonoscopy prep (which I know is a much larger amt) I get terribly nauseated. Any suggestions as to how to get the 17g down? I have to do this twice a day and I've heard just plain water is awful. I plan on plugging my nose. Also, does anyone else have low energy with constipation? Thank you SO much ## How are you doing, Gina? I hope everything is going well and you didn't end up nauseated. But the nausea can be a normal side effect of most of these laxative medications. in many cases it's due to the stimulation of the bowel that happens, there's some internal bloating and cramping that you may not always feel, but it can put some pressure on the stomach making you feel sick. You can learn more...

I am PRONE to kidney stones (do not have one currently) Can I take MiraLax? Does MiraLax cause kidney stones? ## I didn't find anything listing that it has been know to cause them. Learn more Miralax details here. But I'd suggest double checking this information to be certain. Has it been prescribed to you?
