Minimal Dose Of Synthroid Causing Early Side Effects - Advice?

Updated

I've been having trouble starting on a low of synthroid to treat sub-clinical hypothyroidism (TSH ~3.5, no values for T4/T3) for fertility reasons. I'm 33, generally healthy, not overweight, exercise daily and eat a healthy diet. Admittedly, I have been under considerable stress for many years and need to keep working on stress management. First attempt: I initially started taking 25mcg. I've taken the medication first thing in the morning with a full glass of water, not eaten anything for 2 hours and not taken any vitamins/supplements at the same time. 2 days after starting this dose, I began to have a racing heart rate, felt panicky, was very flushed and emotionally labile (crying for no reason/fly off the handle, not my typical emotional state). These symptoms worsened for 6 days to the point where I could not concentrate on my work. My doctor agreed that I was likely hyperthyroid (without testing blood) and gave me the go-ahead to take a 1 week break and try again with a half dose. Symptoms gradually dissipated over the week. Second attempt: I began taking synthroid again yesterday. Instead of cutting the 25mcg pill in half as recommended by my doctor, I chose to cut it in 4 (~6.25mcg). It's day 2, and I'm beginning to feel like my heart rate is rising and I feel slightly panicky. Side effects are still mild and I'm hoping that they don't get worse over the next few days. However, I'm worried that symptoms will get worse as they did with the first attempt. Has anyone had a similar experience? Is it unusual to be so sensitive to synthroid when my initial thyroid status didn't appear to be that bad? Though my TSH levels were sub-clinical, getting those blood results made sense as I've felt mild hypothyroid symptoms for years (cold, sluggish, mildly depressed, etc.). Should I be considering alternating days with and without the 6.25mcg dose of synthroid to adapt my body to the drug? Or try Armour? Any other suggestions?
