Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 46)

Updated

I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

Hi, Liza. I had that, too, and it's awful. There are a couple of things you can try:

1) Melatonin supplements. They help trigger the sleep signals in the brain.
2) Sleep hypnosis. I know it sounds a little out there, but it's more of a "guided meditation" type of thing. You can look up sleep hypnosis on YouTube. The one that helped me was, "8 Hours Sleep Hypnosis for Depression Anxiety Self Confidence Emotional Healing." Even if you aren't experiencing depression/anxiety, it might still be helpful.

Ultimately, however, if those things don't work, you might need a medication to get you through this. I had the severe insomnia, but I also had anxiety, depression, paranoia, obsessive thoughts, so I saw a psychiatrist and was put on a drug called mirtazapine. It's an anti-depressant that has a sedating quality. You take it at night, and it was a life-saver for me. My sleep improved immediately, although it wasn't back to normal for awhile, so don't get discouraged if it doesn't cure the insomnia right away. Another patient I talked to also took mirtazapine for metronidazole toxicity, and it also helped her, but it took more time than it did me. Everyone's different.

ThAnk you so much for your reply,I've ordered so melatonin and I'm at the doctors today. I've been on my own suffering with this for months and have a 4 month old baby and it's been hard. It's mainly affected my cns and is causing muscle twitches all over my body and I also have tingling in feet and hands. Will it ever go away? ?? I just want to be a good mum.

Read over the list of side effects for this drug.. talk to your doctor about it. The drug kills the good bacteria in your stomach which causes all kinds of problems and can have other effects on the brain and body. if you took it for a short time then your side effects may be less than those who took it for 2 weeks... I'm still dealing with side effects but getting better after 12 physical therapy appts and 3 months of tai chi... and I had to figure out for myself how to solve other issues with my gut....

Hi, Liza. Yes, the fluoroquinolone antibiotics are horrible and can cause serious, even permanent damage. It's pretty scary stuff on its own.

Metronidazole has its own nasty side effects, including central nervous system toxicity and peripheral neuropathy.

I finished a three day course of flagyl five weeks ago and have had terribly itchy palms and soles of my feet ever since.

Hi, Helena. Well...that's a little odd, maybe it was an allergic reaction (sometimes, that can linger for a while). Another possibility is that it's a odd version of peripheral neuropathy--aka, nerve damage in the hands and feet. Metronidazole is well-known for causing this problem; it usually presents as burning, tingling or numbness in the hands and feet (or arms and legs, if a person has it really badly). If it's nerve damage, then it might be a good while before the "itching" goes away completely--nerves take a good time to heal.

What has your doctor said? Request to see a neurologist NOW.

Has anybody in here got extreme muscle loss after taken flagyl?

I don't but have heard of others that said it attacked the muscles and tendons in their legs. I've got a friend who has diverticulitis and is taking it and she said she knew folks that did but I'm lucky not to have that issue at the moment.

Hi bjh
Thats good that you dont have that. For me it every muscle in the body. But The worst is my arms, its really bad. I have a hard time using my arms. I train them, but The muscles is just waisting away. Its really scary to see The body just vanish. I hope its not permanent. But i have bad neuropathy because of flagyl. I guess it also destroyed my muscles cells. Thanks to flagyl.

I've been issued flagyl and cipro twice for diverticulitis. I got a lot of the symptoms mentioned here. Later I talked to an ER doctor and he said there are many antibiotic options for diverticulitis. It's just that these two can be issued together. I wouldn't hesitate to ask for something else.
