Metoprolol Side Effects

Updated

I started Metoprolol Tartrate 25mg being one tab every 12 hours. I was in the hospital with a blood pressure of 200/130, sometimes higher with a high pulse and irregular heartbeat. I experienced tightening in chest, slight difficulity in breathing, and extreme variables in my pressures. Most of the time they are in the normal range, but occasionally my systolic has dropped under 100 and my diastolic was 58. I am monitoring my foods and am also taking Ativan twice daily. I am terrified. Anybody else have these variables in pressures? I have only been on the medicines for four weeks now. I have had diabetes and thyroid neg testing. I was diagnosed with Panic Disorder??? Never heard of it before. All my family including five siblings have high blood pressure as well.

These types of variations are not normal, nor necessarily safe. Have you spoken to your doctor about them and if so, what have they said?

Have they run any other types of tests to pinpoint a cause?

Is Metoprolol anything like lisinopril hctz if it is you need to get re-evaluated ASAP this could be very dangerous. I was just taken off of lisinopril hctz by the emergency room doctor because of having a rapid heart rate . I thought it was panic attacks. It was that awful medication for blood pressure lisinopril hctz. You need to follow up with a physican asap. If your doctor is not listening you need to get another doctor that will

If I were you, I'd learn to relax. Your symptoms are very much in line with panic disorder. Panic disorder can cause all of your symptoms including shortness of breath and unsteady blood pressure--which fluctuates a good d eal during the day for everybody.
Also your fluctuations are not abnormal att all. You might resolve your fears entirely with a combination of anti-anxiety medication in the short run and some sessions of talk therapy. I speak from personal experience. Be assured that your symptomas are treatable, NOT life threatening
and very common. Anxiiety atacks are awful to go through, but they won't cause any permanent damage that I know of. Reach out; help is available for your very common problem. Good luck, and have some faith!

I was on Metoprolol Succ ER - 100 Mg for eight months - from day one I would have high blood pressure and very rapid heart beat -In those eight months I went to emergency five times only to be told - Panic Attacks - or I was very healthy. My Cardiologist and Primary Doctor could not find any problems. I was requested to go off of all beta blockers in order to have a stress test - No Metoprolol for two days and no" attacks", as I referred to them. I then realized these pills are quite large so I put them into a spoon and mixed with water before swallowing. It has been one month with no "attacks" My two doctors have indicated it is quite unlikely this was the problem. I KNOW IT WAS!!!!!

Don't believe this fellow AT ALL. I had exactly the same problem with this medication and suffer from no anxiety at all. The medicine sucks. Get off it. And that guy should learn to be more respectful of people who may simply be on the wrong medication, and who wants to have blood pressure problems continually (I had my high blood pressure for over 2 years on the drug when before taking the drug my bp was low-normal always)? And yessss, high blood pressure is indicative of life-threatening problems if left untreated. Most doctors will fob you off. Get off this abominable drug. It made me feel like I was having a cardiac arrest EVERY night and I have positively nothing wrong with my heart just my blood pressure. As soon as I went off it my bp was excellently normal again and no spikes in blood pressure during the course of the night and, thankfully, no feeling like I was in the throes of a cardiac arrest. We're not all panic junkies, ya know. I think that guy is a bozo and should think before he writes such drivel. He obviously never had a medication go wrong on him. I personally think he must be a doctor. His ego dictates nothing less.

Metoprolol is not the right medication for everyone, everyone can react to it differently.

I also had severe problems with it and had to stop taking it. My doctor actually listed it in the allergic reactions section of my medical records to ensure that no one prescribes it to me, again.

At any time, if you are taking a medication and having unusual side effects or problems, you should contact your doctor and if they will not listen or help, then go to a different doctor or your nearest emergency care facility.

Unfortunately, doctors are not as well schooled in medications as pharmacists, so they are often only familiar with the basic side effects and details they may have learned through experience with other patients.

https://www.medschat.com/wiki/Metoprolol/

It is, however, very important to know that you should not stop taking this medication abruptly, on your own. Metoprolol does have an effect on the heart and, even if you don't have a heart problem, stopping it abruptly can cause rebound effects, which could include accelerated heart rate, atrial fibrillation and heart attack.

There is another medication in the same class that also works very well for most people, but it is not known to cause such severe and dangerous side effects. The name of it is Carvedilol, so you may want to ask your doctor about trying it.

I work in health care. thought I "knew it all". I was put on Metoprolol for arrhythmia. I have had one exhausting year....too tired to get out of my own way. No way would my doctor take me off. Well, I argued till he did. I couldn't believe how much better I feel. Get off Metoprolol, it is terrible.

Spirit are there any cardiac clinics in your area? They are usually run by a local hospital, so you may want to call around and ask if they have one.

That's what I had to go to, so I could finally get the help I needed and have someone that would listen to me about the problems I was having with other blood pressure medications that doctors had tried to give me in the past.

Lopressor contains Metoprolol as the active ingredient and, as you can see from the other posts in this thread, there are many people that have problems with it. It is well known to cause severe side effects in many people.

There are other options that you can try, the one I switched to, that isn't known to cause as many side effects is Carvedilol.

Maribel, all medications carry the risk of side effects, even over the counter products.

And while Metoprolol can cause side effects and some people have problems with it, the posts that you see here about that are just a very small percentage of the people using the medication.

There are many, many more that take it every day and don't have a problem with it, so they aren't on here posting.

Some people will experience them and have problems, so their dose will have to be lowered, or they'll have to switch to another medication.

However, most others won't have any severe problems, with it.

There is no way to know who will or will not have any problems with it. Thus, your best bet is to follow your doctors advice and see how the medication works for you.

BP 101/78 PRETTY SCARY WHEN IT'S BEEN ELEVATED THEN STEADY AT ABOUT 129/86...WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? My son was hospitalized about 3 weeks ago with sudden onset of high blood pressure and a heart rate of 115. Upon his release home, he was prescribed this horrible medication- first at 25 mg. once a day then bumped up to 50 mg. the following week ( 25 mg in the morning and 25 mg 12 hours later ). He is 23 years old and has Cerebral Palsy, confined to a wheelchair.
Woke up this morning with beautiful numbers ( 113/76 74 PULSE ) so I called the Dr. to ask if we should cut the meds in half. I know it is dangerous to just stop taking it and he must wean... but I am afraid his blood pressure may drop too low... MD advised to skip morning dose altogether but by noon, his pulse was 113 although his bp was quite normal. Called MD again. Was advised to take half dose to lower heart rate and usual dose tonight. WELL
THIS IS WHERE WE RAN INTO TROUBLE. SYSTOLIC FELL TO 101 for about 2 hours then gradually elevated to 115. NOW I'M TOTALLY FREAKED DAMNED IF I GIVE IT TO HIM TONIGHT FOR FEAR OF IT DROPPING UNDER 100 WHILE HE'S ASLEEP AND DAMNED IF I DON'T BECAUSE THAT MIGHT NOT BE SAFE EITHER! Help anyone?

UPDATE: Son has now safely lowered his dose to 12.5 mg. twice a day. ( For 1 week, per MD ) No elevation in BP or heart rate. Dr. advised to lower again this week down to one 12.5 mg. dose in the morning only.
Seizure like episodes twice this week during the night.
Dr. states the less medicine taken, the less side effects will occur. Also to give it a month and body should adjust with minimal side effects if any. Has now been a month. How much more can he endure?! Has anyone else had seizures/episodes like this? If so, what can be done? HELP?

I've been taking Metoprolol 100 mg twice a day for a month now. I have the same symptoms as you and more. blood pressure 200/135 Now blood presure jumps all around but mostly is 90/50 heart beat 42. Sometimes blood pressure is normal But most of the time I Feel like IM going to die, so I've been weaning my self off of it. Finally stopped taking it today have not died yet and my blood pressure is normal heart beat almost 50 feel much better so far. Two weeks ago also started a juicing diet and cut all salt out. I suggest that anyone with heart problems or health problems in general watch Fat Sick & Almost Dead you can catch it on Netflix or Amazon or order it on Amazon. Also watch Forks over Knives This two Documentaries will change your thinking about taking all this medication. People with the same conditions as us have cured them selves with the diets they recommend so that's what IM trying to do. You should have your doctor monitor you while on these diets. My doctor won't do it so IM doing it on my own and hoping for the best. IM going to die taking all these medication anyway I feel like IM going to try the healthy diet way if I die then I die.
Good Luck to you all

I have been on this drug for a few years. When I would take it, after half an hour, it was like I was drunk. I would stumble about, could barely see with blurry vision. Life has been hell. Taken off it and now back to normal.

If you never had panic disorder before I would say, you still don't! It is the drug. I was in almost the same situation. The differences are that I had a heart attack and had to have a stent put in. They tried four beta blockers on me and I reacted terribly to every one. They took me off and put me drug you are month later. I spent 4 months in high anxiety and depression. Which I had never experienced in my entire life. I had all of the symptoms the doctors told me were not possible. Which were many of the ones that you have expressed. From my understanding to have you on a beta-blocker. Simply for high Blood Pressure makes no sense at all. My advice to you is get off of the beta blocker but wean yourself off. Cut your dose by a quarter for a few days and then cut it in half and then reduce it of course, under the direction of your doctor. I can tell you this, After 3 days off of the drug, my head cleared up. My depression and anxiety started to go away. And the pain in my knees that they told me could not happen began to lessen. After I got off, the drug had messed up my cortisol levels, which the doctors said was not possible. This has caused me other challenges. My final advice is, get off the drug as soon as possible. Find another alternative to lower your blood pressure. I have discovered that high blood pressure can also be a neurological or endocrine system dysfunction. Doctors seem to know very little about drugs other than what they read or are told. Pharmacists know more and we the people experiencing the things we are told are not possible are the experts and it is up to us to find the answers for ourselves. Listen to your body and use the doctors as your assistants not the authority.

Re: RotoruaBoyNZ (# 70) Expand Referenced Message

Oh and I've been prescribed Metoprolol 23.75mg and I will not start taking it until ALL other options are investigated. I was in the Hospital. Just hooked me up to ECG and gave me fluids while insisting I need shock treatment. X-rays said no enlarged heart as I am an avid cyclist. I asked for Magnesium in a drip and felt better. They did not offer, I had to insist. They wanted me to stay overnight as my heart was all over the place. Not one beat was consistent but I released myself at 11pm and went home. Diet and exercise with controlled breathing are the only solution. My lifestyle is to blame. 4 cups big coffee and sugar per day and chocolate and regular cannabis at night for relaxation now stopped for a month and it will take another 2 months to stabilize from coffee (worse than cannabis to detox) I feel from research. No coffee, tea, chocolate, alcohol, sulphites and easy sugar and feel stable with everyday getting better.

Sulphites in food, especially gelatin (30% glycine) and some dried fruits causes my afib and tach.
Boiled fish heads, chicken and beef bones do not. Also sugar and honey over 20g at once do too. Vege starch (Potatoes for example) boiled for 30 mins min do not though. Magnesium and taurine (magnesium taurate) chill me out as they raise GABA. Breathing exercises that stimulate the vagas nerve are also very very useful and to my surprise really work to calm me while stressed. Tons of silverbeet with main meals for magnesium are best with beef heart (taurine) lambs liver and kidneys. I avoid chicken unless organic but eat 1 org chicken liver each day. Walk everywhere.

I've not taken this medication. However, I had those same symptoms as you. That racey heart, and unstable Blood Pressures. After several yrs of drs saying that its my fault: diet, coffee, panic, etc....i am told its the kidneys regulating blood pressure.I do have chronic kidney disease...BUT no one was telling me this for several yrs. And another issue with racey heart: I am potassium/sodium deficient.(finally put on prescription Potassium and no more racey heart!) Just an idea here, but u could ask for blood work to check on vitamin levels, etc. (I do not know what it's called).

Hey y’all. I was just prescribed Metoprolol 50mg due to high bp & fast heartbeats. What should I expect based on y’all's experiences? I’m a 38 year old female and I weigh 190lbs. I’m 5ft 4in tall. Are there any vitamins I should take with it?
