Hi. I need to find help. I am addicted to pain pills and would really like to get off of them. I have tried methadone and it works, i just need help finding a doctor to prescribe it for me. I live in Michigan. If anyone knows could you please help me? I cant go to a clinic because i dont live near one. I live in the upper penninsula but would drive downstate to get a doctor.....

Everyone please read post 138!!! If you need methadone for chronic pain, make an appointment with a pain management specialist!!!

If you want methadone for addiction, it is NOT legal for it to be scripted outside an OTP (opioid treatment program). Aka "clinic"!!!

This is a federal regulation that is NOT flexible!!! Get educated and get treatment!!!!

Where in N.Y. are you? I know of a pain management Dr. that perscribes methadone, but he's in Long Island, can you get there?

I agree Infodone...at this point it's redundant to attempt to explain the difference between prescribing Methadone for Pain Mgmt vs Addiction. Infodone is correct- go to SAMHSA.gov to read the new federal regs (implemented in 2001-02) regarding Methadone for addiction. Guten Nacht all~

Hi angel-
If you are on methadone for pain management and need another doctor to attend to hopefully continue this medication and course of treatment, you will need to be referred to a Pain Management Clinic or a physician that deals in only Pain Management. To have a treatment plan for pain management that includes taking an opiate to help control the pain, that will have to be the route to take. Hopefully someone from your area can give some advice about possible physicians or pain mgmt. centers in your area. Once you do find a place to attend, you may not have a hard time of it when it comes to the prescribing of 10mgs of methadone because that is a low dose (even for pain mgmt).
I hope you are able to find some help in ypur area. Good luck and hopefully others will come along and give some suggestions from your area (Bk, NY).

Yes, I'm looking for a doctor long island to prescribe methadone for pain management. I don't like oxy or any of the other short acting meds. I have mri and xrays for proof of my back condition. I had a doctor who was prescribing the methadone but he got sick and referred me to another doctor that was trying to switch my meds to dilaudet. My last doctor was writing my script higher then I needed. 70mg 3x Dailey because he said my body would need more as I continued. I took 40mg 3x Dailey for years and had great relief. I still have meds and looking to find new doctor that will continue that treatment rather then go to a doctor that wants to use different meds I don't like. If you could help that would be great. Thank you

Hi to you both- Deb and Travis. I wish I could help but all I could do is give a directory of buprenorphine and methadone treatment facilities that is located on SAMHSA's website, and I know that isn't what you are looking for.
It is very hard to find any doctors that are not at a pain clinic or who only work alone as a pain control physician who will prescribe any pn medications for chronic pain. Some doctors will prescribe pn medication once but will then refer pts to a pain management doctor if they are needing ongoing treatment (it's mostly due to some newer 'ish' regs).
I understand completely because I was once in that same situation. I finally had to bite the bullet and see if I could be accepted into an OTP (Methadone 'clinic'), and I have now been there many years. I so did not want to do that and did not think I would or could qualify, but I did and the rest is history. I go once per month and after all is said and done it costs approx $300 per month (I have very good BC/BS insurance through MBUSI...and it pays ZERO). But anyway- I completely understand what you both are going through!
I wish you both well and I will do some searching to see what I can find. I am part of a network of people that comes in handy at times! So I shall ask them and I will also do some searching. If I come across anything for either of you...I shall let you know!

Brca survivor- Thanks really!!! Anything u can dig up would be appreciated! U said U were scared u would not be accepted to methadone program... can I ask why? What are the requirements? It's so crazy that this is so difficult. This is the medication that works and yet impossible to get because it is assumed u want it for the wrong reasons. Ahhhhhhhh... Thanks again for your help and any future help.

To had enuff from 2010,You sound like a rude,arrogant, judging hypocrite!!For people like you I have to wonder if you have ever experienced pain in the slightest way?Most who are addicted to pain meds became that way not by choice but because they had unbearable pain and couldn't deal with it anymore!! Talk about God help us all, I say God help your soul WHEN the day something horrible happens to you and you are begging for a pill to give you some relief!!Keep judging, if not already you will be in the shoes of us u have judged!!!Just hope God has pitty for you!!!!

Deb- I promise I haven't forgotten about replying! I will be on here tonight and will leave an in-depth response to some of your questions :) Re: "Tired of hypocritic haters"... I feel your pain and I understand why those type of posts really tick you off. I work with an Advocacy group called NAMA-R (National Association of Medication-Assisted Recovery) and they work hard to dispel the "Myths" of Methadone, and now also Buprenorphine (Suboxone, Bunavail, Zubsolv, etc.). Through them I have learned to reply to those "haters" by posting articles that explain how "Opiate Replacement Therapy" actually works and I then walk away...because I have to- for my own sanity! I don't always have time to do that now, so I mostly ignore those I*****. One way or another what comes around goes around, and people who make such mean and DUMB comments as that person did...well they're just asking for it! There will come a time in which they TOO will be in pain (and hopefully it's MAJOR pn...lol). Have a good day! And Deb, I shall reply tonight! :)

156,thank you! Too often people judge! My dad used to look down on mine& my mom's prescription drug use, she has rods in her back,crippled hands from a few different arthritis, scoliosis, just to name a few problems, he used to say he would never take a pill blah blah...,until one day he couldn't get up out of bed w out my little brothers help,he then ended up in bedroom floor unable to move for a couple days, he had to urinate in a plastic bottle, finally he asked my mom to PLEASE give him one of her pain pills once he was able to get up I took him to the doctor, he was very happy to take the Mepergan she prescribed him!! Still to this day he has pain so bad he asks my mom for a methadone, he no longer judges us but is still very against people mis using meds,he learned some times there is a true need for long term pain meds&he got what every one that unfairly judges one will eventually get in due time, btw my dad is a great man&has never wronged anyone but my mom and I both have ligitement reasons for our usage&I believe w all my heart God showed him not to judge and if you do you one day will see what it's like to walk in the shoes of the ones you have judged!No one should suffer and if one is suffering and there's a pill that could take the suffering away then I would think it be stupid for them not to take the pill till they don't have to suffer any longer!!

Listen HadEnuff ... you never know what its like until you have been there ... Ive been there and back .. I use to be like you and judge. You don't know what brought most people to that point ... if you had a life you would mind you own business instead of everybody elses !!!!!!
