DAVE: Yes, Suboxone can ABSOLUTELY be used for pain.

That is a False statement! Suboxone is being used by many pain management centers for extreme pain relief. Suboxone is Sublingeral meaning it is time released. It does have an opiate blocker in it.Subutex is the same drug[Bupenorphine]. It does not have an opiate blocker and is Ir-instant release.

DOC ROCK: The term "SUBLINGUAL" does NOT mean "time-released". Sublingual means something taken under the tongue. Whether something is time-released or not has nothing to do with it being taken sublingually.

Your comments about "opiate blockers" aren't exactly accurate either. While the opioid antagonist Naloxone is used to "block" the action of opioids in the case of an overdose, it is actually only in Suboxone to keep people from injecting it. Buprenorphine itself is also a partial opioid antagonist. Naloxone has a very low bioavailability when taken sublingually, therefore it is actually the Bupe itself that does the "blocking" when talking about Subutex/Suboxone, not the Naloxone.

I've had several people say that you can take other opiates anytime on those patches and not get sick (even at the same time.) Actually, I've never heard of anyone getting sick with the combination of Butran patches and opiates. It's POSSIBLE (not definite) that the half life of the patch may block opiates, but it's different for everyone. If you're worried about that, just wait until you feel the patch wear off, or feel breakthrough pain and then take your morphine-this should only be a half a day, maybe a day before you feel that. I would ask your doctor as well, or if you can't get ahold of him/her, call any pharmacy and ask them.

Actually, just call a pharmacy and ask just to be safe. I've been in precipitated withdrawal before and I wouldn't want to be the cause of that for you. It is terrible. I've never heard of anyone getting sick from the patch, but that doesn't mean it cannot happen. You can call the pharmacy you picked it up from or even a 24 hour pharmacy like CVS just to ask that question. Tell them the milligram and everything as well.

I can tell you FOR SURE not to put the patch on again until the morphine is totally out of your body because THAT WILL MAKE YOU SICK. However, the other way around (Suboxone in my system and THEN opiates,) I've always been fine, but with a little opiate receptor blocking, so not as great pain management. That's a terrible combination btw. You should maybe ask you doctor for a different medication because the Butran patch is not a great combination medication with other opiates for this reason.

HONEY: Yes as Zydot said, taking opioids AFTER Buprenorphine won't throw you into withdrawals. It's taking Bupe too soon AFTER the Morphine that would be a problem. So you should be fine.

Soooo sorry I took so long to reply. I live in canada. I did have my medical marijuana licence, but after the yr. I let it go. I have heard that the oil is much better, I guess that is the cbd. I haven't tried it. Im on suboxone now and cymbalta and other meds which are not working at all. I also have chronic pain due to my back and many other health problems. Personally I think its crps/rsd instead of fibro.. It started with pain and burning in my foot to the point I couldn't even walk at work..Went to pain clinic and had mris done and showed some problems, but mild..Then the clinic started using inj's., epiderals and burnt some nerves in the back. Now I have back pain everyday..There are lots of us canadians not happy with the new pain management law, which has lowered the doses of meds..Some committing suicide. You can buy your cbd on the internet now. We cant here. Thank you sooo much for taking the time to answer my question. I too suffer from migraines but that's been since I was much younger. Not fun. I feel for you. {edited for privacy}. Seriously I mean that.....Doesn't matter what part of the world we live in, or what ever the chronic pain is, we all need to support each other. The government is making it difficult for us to have pain control and options. God bless.

Totally wrong. Suboxone has helped my pain. It depends on your pain, dosage, and mind set. It may not provide the euphoria, most are accustomed to associating with pain relief

From what I understand, only certain licensed doctors can prescribe suboxone and the like. Let your fingers do the walking! That's what I did, and I am SO grateful that I did! I found a doctor who truly cares about me and my health. Best of everything with your journey.

How should I best approach my doctor about increasing the dosage of my suboxone? I've been on 2mg-0.5mg every 4-6 hours (1/2 film up to 5 times per day) for the past 2 1/2 years. I've had some rough patches and he knows it, while other times were much better. Now it seems like it's getting rough more often and I can't get through several days as well as I used to do. I'm just afraid that he'll say no, and I'll end up running out before time. I've been taking supplements for pain relief as well but like everything, they do just so much.

LADYANWYN: Just be straight up with him. Tell him you aren't getting enough relief and you need help. You aren't on that high of a dose anyway.

And to answer your other comment, yes, doctors have to get certification in order to prescribe Subutex/Suboxone/Zubsolv. You can find prescribing doctors on the website Suboxone.com.

I'm sorry. I wish I could help more. I'm on 1 and a half a day for addiction and my current doctor won't move me up no matter what. But my previous doctor would, within reason. He took me up only a half more a day, but it helped. It will probably be different for you, however, because I'm always looked at with suspicion when I ask something like that, you shouldn't be looked at in that way. I probably deserve it :)

Just tell your doctor that you've tried all of the advice and you have no choice left but to ask him for help with this. Have an answer prepared when he asks what you've tried. Just be honest. It sounds like you're being honest here and not just trying to get something else, so just be honest with him and say, "I've tried everything and I can't take it anymore and I can't live my life like this. I need help. Please help me. I need to either increase the dosage or try something different." If he offers a suggestion, tell him how you really feel about it, or if you've tried it before, tell him how it worked for you. All too often, we just meekly take the first suggestion and leave as though we're guilty of something...and we're not! You deserve to be okay. After all that (you say he knows it's been rough on you), if he still doesn't help you, then find another doctor immediately. Good luck!

It's hard and wouldn't wish this catch 22 on anyone. Im a ex-addict (opiates) so it's been hard taking stuff like oxycodone. I suffer with pain everyday. It causes depression, acute anxiety and my pain does get worse.

RENEE: I hear ya. It's a tough situation all around. For addicts AND pain patients. And unfortunately, pain patients end up BECOMING addicts, at least physically, because such is the nature of opioids. Hang in there, I know it's hard. Trust me, I know.

Have you looked into CBD products for pain?

I take MS contin for chronic pain and fusion surgeries in the last 4 years. I have been taking ms contin for over 10 years. What is suboxone and why is this drug used at all for us real pain sufferers if it blocks opioid treatment? I see this all the time. MS contin or morphine sulfate works great for me. I don't abuse it and my drs never change my script. I take 30mg 4 times daily. It works through the night while I sleep, never any withdrawals, no side effects. I also take alprazolam, 1mg 3 times daily and some other non controlled substances. I guess I am curious about all this hype about suboxone. Can someone fill me in about the new meds out there? Thanks, J

It's my personal belief that dr's are only prescribing Subutex or Suboxone for pain bc of the DEA. I've been on it for 6 years now, and it is not meant to be a pain medication. In addition to that, if it is prescribed along with an actual opiate (like Morphine), the Subutex will block the other opiate from taking any effect. Just try to educate yourself and don't just accept whatever your dr tries to give you. Opiates like Morpine, Oxymorphone (Opana) or Oxyxondone (Oxycontin, Percocet) are the best pain treatments known to mankind at this point. Possible addiction issues put aside, they are truly the best medications to treat pain. There is literally nothing better right now, although scientists have been working for a very long time to find a substitute, Suboxone/Subutex is not it, and was meant for addiction treatment.

Excuse me but I'm maybe addicted to synthetic morphine, but I agree with the person that opiates work well for pain. I have been on 120 msg a day for years for severe pain from back surgeries that almost took my life. I don't take more than I am suppose to and never run out early. The addicts and abusers are the people that make it hard for everyone. I just wondered what suboxone was. I never meant no harm. Do what you need to do to live out your lives in peace. By the way, has anyone had to live with shoulder arthritis to the point of needing replacement? It hurts! JJ
