Macrodantin Itchy Side Effect

Updated

I was prescribed Macrodantin to treat my UTI. Twice daily for five days. About two days after I competed the antibiotics, I started to itch everywhere, especially my hands and feet. They feel like the after effects of mosquito or ant bites. It's been four days and I'm still itching. The more I scratch, the more swollen it gets. 50mg of Benadryl helps me sleep through the night but I wake up with the effects the next morning. Aloe Vera helps for a few minutes. What do I do?

Hello, Cindy! How are you doing? Has there been any change?

You might be allergic to this medication, and if that is the case, such allergic reactions tend to get worse with repeated exposure, according to the NIH, so it would be best to have this checked out by your doctor to be sure. If it is an allergic reaction, you will have to avoid taking this medication in the future.

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.

Still no change, the doctor's office was closed for the weekend and I'm going to ask about it tomorrow morning. I just find it odd that it's been five days now and the allergic reaction hasn't gone away.

Update: went to the doctor and now I'm officially allergic to Macrodantin. Was given a Decadron shot, prescribed Bactrim, methylprednisolone/Medrol dose pack, and Vistaril to treat allergic reaction. Thank you for all the help.

hi! similar experience for me here. I've been on macrobid twice in my life for a uti. first time was a few years ago and about a week after finishing it i became itchy everywhere. so so itchy. benedryl helped but I had to take benedryl every day for a couple months. eventually it went away. now, a few days after fishing a course of macrobid, the itch starts up again. hands feet and Scalp mostly. this time around its not nearly as bad or constant as the first time. if you Google it, medical professionala deny that this could possibly be a reaction to the drug as it's been out of the system for days. however....I believe they're wrong and researchers should look into it. I'm 100% positive that my reaction is due to the antibiotic. why it only starts a few days after I fin ish taking them, I don't know. Doesn't make sense but it happens. just wanted to share that with you. you're not alone and its not in your head. it's real and happens
