Have you talked to your doctor about this?

The first guess as to the culprit would probably be the Simvastatin, these statin medications are very well known to cause these types of side effects in some people that use them. This means it may not be the right medication for you to use and you may need to switch to something else.

The Losartan can also cause these types of side effects, but it isn't known to do so as frequently as the Simvastatin.

How many different medications are you taking with the Losartan?

Based on information I've gathered, I'm thinking that Losartan is the primary cause of your joint and muscle pain. A few of Losartan's side effects include:

Leg, knee, or back pain
Muscle cramps or weakness

Referenced from:

Also wanted to mention that Losartan controls high blood pressure but does not cure it. Have you considered looking into "side effect free" natural alternatives for controlling your high blood pressure? There are far too many natural options to control and manage hypertension rather than leaving yourself stuck with a prescription pill!

Please post back if you need help researching alternative methods for reducing blood pressure.

I say yes to Losartan. I take Losartan 50/hctz 25 and have terrible muscle and joint pains to the point I can barely walk. Working with the dr, I went on half dose and the pains were lessened. He switched me to Losartan without the diuretic, and in less than 3 days the pains came back. I took it upon myself this morning to start taking half dose and will call into him within the week.

I would say your problems are from the simvastatin. I took it briefly for a few months and developed all kinds of muscle pains, rashes and so on. I was found to be allergic to simvastatin. Also, a friend who has taken it for three years developed rashes and breakouts all over her body. After doctor ruled out food allergies, etc. took her off simvastatin and hbp meds until further tests by dermatologist could be done.

I would guess the Losartan because I too have severe leg pain, and when I don't take it for some reason, my pain is less severe in only one night. I've asked my doctor to take me off of it, but he won't. I've decided to wean myself off of it.

I was on Losartan for 10 months and developed severe disabling pain & weakness in my legs and when I asked my Dr. if it could be the losartan he said absolutely and took me off it . I would never recommend it. It's been a year and the pain is not gone. It's less and the loss of strength is not as bad but I'm a long way from feeling normal.

I have had several different drugs to control my BP over 30 years. I was fine on 10mg Amlodipine for all that time until six months ago I developed a rare side effect, rosacea telangiectasia on my face which really upset me. Within 3 months of ceasing this drug it had disappeared. HOwever I started on Losartan 25mg building up to 100mg together with 2.5mg of Bendroflumethiazide and have had terrible calf pain in both legs mainly at rest. Today I had bloods taken to check renal and liver function and also glucose levels. Also having ECG today as BP continues to go unchecked. When I see my GP on Friday he is going to decide which drug I can take next and there is only one group left he told me. I have cut out the Bendro and also halved the Losartan until but continue with calf pain. Not happy!

I was on Valsartan 100-25 HCT. Pharmacy switched brands to Aurobindo distributer/Aurobindo manufacturer. Started having fainting spells within 2 hrs of taking the new brand, once behind the wheel of a car. Went to doctor and switched to Losartan 50-12.5 HCT in morn and Losartan 50-no HCT night. Morning pill okay 'cause brand was distributer North Star out of TN who manufactured at Aurobindo (India). Night time 'caused fainting (not as bad as Valsartan was 'cause only 50 mgs) Aurobindo distributer/Aurobindo manufacturer. So, stopped taking night time pill. Thus Blood Pressure not under control. Doctor refused to switch back to Valsartan non-Aurobindo distributer. Learned on the internet that Obama made a trade deal with India in 2013 where Aurobindo could enter our country (New Jersey) as a distributer in early 2014. They always were a manufacturer for USA distributers who had to tow the line with the FDA. Now, because of trade deal, Aurobindo is to SELF MONITOR their quality, thus when the pill is Aurobindo distributer and Aurobindo manufacturer the QUALITY is crap and harmful and dangerous, but the FDA WILL NOT do anything to them as ordered by Obama.

So...look at the distributer AND the manufacturer! If the pill bottle says AURO that means Aurobindo distributer AND Aurobindo manufacturer AND that means it is harmful pills because they are allowed to push that into USA markets without consequences from the FDA. Aurobindo is now running to all the pharmacy wholesalers and undercutting good quality medicines distributed by USA pharmaceutical distributers. All the retail pharmacies like CVS, Walmart, Walgreens are switching brands 'cause THEY get a lower cost which THEY do not pass on to you, the customer. You can complain to the pharmacies, but they do not care what they push over the counter.

So, I put on my medical history....ALLERGIC to Aurobindo distributed products. That way...no one can give that to me and I can refuse to purchase it. If more people refused to purchase it...then they'd go out of business. Tell everyone you know to check their bottles and demand a quality pill from a USA distributor.

You need to say allergic because nowdays the only way you can go into a hospital is with a 'hospitalist' permission. A hospitalist is a specialist who oversees you while you are in the hospital. Your regular doctor is not allowed to care for you in the hospital. The hospitals' administration has taken away all the regular doctors' admitting privileges. You must have a strange and unknown hospitalist and the only way to get one is going through the emergency room and paying that high cost. In my area, the hospital is closing down their old building and constructing a new building with THREE ERS in it! Because ERs are the new money maker for them!

So, how do you avoid getting pumped full of Aurobindo crap? Just say that you are allergic...then they can't do it.

I absolutely know that Aurobindo distributer and Aurobindo manufacturer is harmful crap. My spouse had a pill to help relax and counter the steroid prednisone. The pharmacy switched him to Aurobindo/Aurobindo. My spouse was so-o-o-o relaxed and uninhibited that one day, my spouse pulled his pants down and did a number 2 job on someone's front lawn...midday! My spouse could have been arrested, for Pete's sake. So I checked and sure enough...the pill was now Aurobindo distributor and Aurobindo manufacturer. I marched that prescription over to another pharmacy and got a USA distributor called Blue Point. No problems since. No unusual behavior.

There is nothing that can be done except refuse purchasing of the product.

All tests were normal. I am now taking just 25mg Losartan and hardly any muscle pain at all now, stopped Bendroflumethiazide as well. BP last week was down to 154/73 which is the best result for me since REDUCING the drug Losartan and I do not feel fuzzy in the head now either. GP wants to add 8mg of Doxazocin (CAndasartan) but after reading about all the possible side effects do not wish to take this. I will keep checking my BP each week and see how I continue on just 25mg of Losartan and nil else.

I have been taking 1 1/2 of losartan 50mg. Pharmacy has switched Losartan VIRTUS to AUROBINDO....1) Are there any different / dangerous side effects for these two pills ? and 2) what is a safer alternative for reducing high blood pressure ?

Its definitely the Losartan. I took Losartan 50mg for several months until my BP was lower. I took myself off because I felt like it was creating the unbearable leg pain.

My BP has since went back up and I started the Losartan about 3 weeks ago. I can barely stand the amount of pain I'm in. My legs and hips hurt ALL THE TIME now. I'm calling the doctor tomorroe and stopping this medication.

Can anyone suggest natural alternatives that actually lower BP?

Look up all the links that give the side effects for Losartan. Some links have side effects that other links don't. This way you can get a bigger picture. Chronic sinus issues are listed under Losartan. Even acute sinus infection.

I’m itching pretty bad where it comes and goes—after taking 1 1/2 tablets of 100mg Losartan. Already took 2 tablets of Benadryl. Not much relief. Can I take 800 mg ibuprofen or my hydrocodone/acetaminophen? I really don’t want to go to ER or urgent care.

I also had severe joint pain after starting Losartan. I asked my doctor about it and of course he said no it wasn’t that. I took myself off and the pain stayed 2 more weeks.Just now starting to get better. I was taking it for kidney protection with Type 1 diabetes.A nurse at the office said she had the same side effect with taking it.

Hello, I had the same symptoms after one year on Losartan. Plus cold hands and feet, intense thirst, and anxiety. I think it is related to Losartan being an Angiotensin Receptor Blocker and the build up of Angiotensin or its precursors in your body. Has this been resolved for you?

I have been on Losartan 50mg for about one year, after starting on Lisinopril 10 mg for about a month (unfortunately Lisinopril caused a cough). About one month ago I tried to transition to Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg, and it was a horrible experience. I ended up in the ER with repeated painful blood pressure spikes of over 170/110. The spikes lasted more than a week until the Losartan built up in my system again. As a result, I quit caffeine, quit salt and lost nearly 20 lbs this month. Now I am considering a transition to Losartan 25 mg in the morning plus Amlodipine 2.5 mg in the evening. Losartan 50 mg alone either results in too low blood pressure (100/70) or too high (140/95) throughout the day. I have split my 50 mg dose into a morning and afternoon dose of 25 mg each. Does anyone have any good experiences of switching classes? Is there any way to minimize the rebound effect of ARBs or ACE inhibitors? I have had numerous tests and all check out that I am healthy (apart from high blood pressure), although I am sedentary and overweight. I should add that I tried cutting back my dose to 37.5 mg (one and a half 25 mg tablets) using Propranolol 5 mg to help in the evening, but Propranolol slowed my heart rate too much and did not control my blood pressure at all.
