Long Use 1g Augmentin

I was on 1g Augmentin a day for over ten years. Now they say that was too long and that I have Crohns. Could my symptoms come from too much Augmentin for too long? What can I do? Gastroenterologist stopped the prescription but has no ideas other than treating it as Crohns. I'm not getting better after two years of Pentasa for Crohns.

Hello, Calvin! How are you? I'm sorry about the problems you're having.

Crohn's isn't known to be caused by medications, so it's doubtful that the Augmentin would have caused it and not everyone responds to the available medications, such as Pentasa.

The FDA lists the typical side effects of Pentasa as possibly including diarrhea, gas, nausea and back pain. So, it could be helping and just causing side effects that are similar to what you experienced with Crohn's.

Are you on any other medications? Have they offered you any other treatment options?

At one point, they offered Humira. Dr. says he has no idea what ti costs, ask the pharmacist. Pharmicist says the insurance company sets my cost and the only way to find out is to order it. When I looked online, it looked like it costs about $60,000 a year. Yoiks! I turned it down. I was 69 when diagnosed, so I haven't had long to learn about this.
