Lobazam 5, Levipil 500

Updated

My mother is suffering for epilepsy. She has been admitted to the hospital 8times for last 1 and 1/2 years. Doctor prescribed her Lobazam 5 and Levipil 500. Now she is feeling drowsy and some time she has lost her balance. If it is a side effect of the medicine, then what should be our course of action?

Clobazam is a Benzodiazepine derivative and yes, it can cause some dizziness and drowsiness, as a side effect.

Levipil contains Levetiracetam, it is an anticonvulsant and it can cause the same types of side effects.

So, the two together could even be compounding the problem.

How long has she been taking them?

The side effects should start to taper off and improve, as her body gets used to the medications, but it can take about 4 to 6 weeks.

Thanks for the valuable feedback. She has been taking Levipil since February 2011 when she was admitted to the hospital (7th times). She has been taking Lobazam 5 since March 25th, 2011 when she was admitted again for convulsion (8th times). I don't have any one except my mother, please guide me what else I can do for her. Thanks again.

Kousick, if she is losing her balance, due to dizziness, she really needs to talk to her doctor, or you need to do it for her.

It is important to keep her seizures under control, but if she is losing her balance, it could put her in danger of falling and suffering a head injury, which could worsen her condition.

Her doctor is also going to want to be able to check as to whether her losing her balance is related to the medications or if its a result of small seizures.

I had a discussion with the doctor. He has added another 2 medicine "Strocit oral drop 5ml 2ice daily"
Syndopa-110 1/4th twice daily. Is it sufficient to recover her from this illness. Please advice.

The only way to know what might help her, is for her to try the medications her doctor advises and see if they work and do anything to help remedy the situation.

Strocit contains Citicoline, in the U.S. this is actually considered a supplement, not even a drug. It is believed to help with mental and cognitive function.

Here, it is often added to energy drinks or supplements, that we can buy over the counter.

Syndopa contains Carbidopa and Levedopa, this is usually used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's Disease or other conditions that involve involuntary movements.

That said, I am really not sure why the doctor prescribed these, nor what of her symptoms they think they will help with.

Did he give you any details on how he expected them to help?

Yesterday my Mother was hodpitalized again. She is completely restless. She has not been sleeping for last 24 hours. Doctor said it's a Behavioral Disorder, can be the cause of Levipil-500, but not sure. In hospital following medicine is using for her treatment: Lobazam-10, Injection-Levipil 500, Tab - Sompraz - 20 and amlodoc-5. Could you please tell me wheather the Behavioral Disorder can be the cause of Levipil 500?

I am very sorry to hear that she is in the hospital, again.

The Levetiracetam in the Levipil does affect brain chemicals, since it is an anticonvulsant, which is why for some people, it also works as a mood stabilizer. However, in some people it can cause the opposite effect and cause them problems. So, yes, there is a possibility that the Levipil is causing the problem.

To provide you with some information on the other news on you listed that they are using in the hospital...

The Sompraz contains Esomeprazole, it is a proton pump inhibitor that is used to reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach. It's mainly used to treat and prevent conditions like heartburn, acid reflux and ulcers.

It may cause side effects like nausea, gas and stomach pain.

The Amlodoc contains the active ingredient Amlodipine, it is a calcium channel blocker that is used to treat high blood pressure and cardiac conditions.

Side effects might include nausea, dizziness, headache and stomach pain.

My mother is still in hospital. As per psychiatrist its may case of behavioural disorders. In hospital they are using serenace (injection), Lozep and Encorate-300. Is there any permenant cure for this or is it only to be controlled by daily consumption of dosage? is there any side effect also?

On both the Epilepsy and behavioral disorders, there is really no cure for either one. However, therapy and coping skills may help her to do better with the behavioral problem and might help improve it.

All medications carry the risk of side effects, even over the counter products.

The Serenace that she is being given contains the active ingredient Haloperidol, it is an antipsychotic that is used to treat Schizophrenia, acute psychosis, delirium and other mental health issues.

Side effects can include: dry mouth, lethargy, muscle stiffness and tremors.

More details:

Lozep contains the active ingredient Clonazepam, this is a Benzodiazepine, it is used to treat anxiety, nervous disorders and for its sedative like effects.

Side effects for it can include: dizziness, irritability, nausea and headache.

More details:

Encorate contains the active ingredient Valproic Acid, which is used as an anticonvulsant and as a mood stabilizer.

Its side effects might include: nausea, weight gain, fatigue and hair loss.

Is she doing any better on these medications?

I don't think that those medicines have worked at all. I can see her dizziness & irritability. I had a discussion with the doctor, he said it will take some time to come out from this incident. Would you please tell me what should have been done or what kind of medicine is better for her in this regards. If you suggest me something, then I can discuss with the doctor to save the life of my mother. Please advise.

I really can't say what should have been done, as I can't fault her doctors, because for the most part, they have been prescribing medications that are commonly used for the problems she has. They didn't give her some type of untested therapy or medication, they have mostly stuck with tried and true medications.

The issue, however, is that the medications are causing side effects and there is really no way that any doctor can know if any given patient is going to experience these problems from any medication or not.

As to other medications that might be able to try, I don't know which ones are available on the market there, but here's an information page on Epilepsy and the medications used to treat it. So, you can learn more about the possibilities to discuss with her doctor:

And here is the link for the behavioral medications, in case she still needs those:

Are there any other questions?
