Klonopin Brand Name

Updated

I've been unable to find Klonopin (brand name) at any pharmacy. Although I've taken this medication for several years, this is the first time I've been unable to find it. I've been told the manufacturer (Roche) has it on backorder. Some say it's no longer available. I cannot take the generic as I get a serious migraine. Does anyone have any suggestions where I might get a Rx filled?

Hello, Bonita! How are you?

Yes, there seems to a shortage due to a recent sale of the manufacturer, but I can't find anything for sure on when it will be resolved.

If you can't take the generic, then the best thing to do may be to speak with your doctor and try an alternative in the meantime, such as Xanax.

This medication carries the risk of being habit forming and could cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache and irritability.

Are there any other questions or concerns?

I contacted company as I also am unable to take generic Klonopin as it gives me a horrible headache. The company told me possibly be back in production in September. My doctor did give me Xanax to help till get Klonopin Brand back.

It was encouraging to learn that others are caught in the Klonopin shortage. I'm trying to take generic Xanax and am having very weird symptoms... dizziness, nausea, etc. I'll be in contact with the prescribing doctor today to see if I can get brand name.
Thanks to all for the feedback!

I had a call back from Roche which makes Klonopin. He told me they are hoping to start manufacturing again in October. After reading about everyone having to go to generic like me and experiencing headaches really helped me a lot . I have been having headaches now for about 2 months and they have been getting worse turning into Migraines so I have had to go to ER twice in less than a month for shots to try to stop the painful headaches but I still get them. So after researching time on this generic Klonopin it is making sense now that it is the generic flaring up these headaches. Be so glad when name brand comes back.

I called the last of July and was told they should have it back on the market to actually get it to distributors and have it filled October. I said that would mean it would have to be in production in September. She just told me that it has to do with regulatory control on one of the inactive ingredients. That if they don't follow though with testing on it, they wouldn't be able to manufacture it at all but assured me they had no plan to discontinue it. It's just a matter of time and it'll be back. I just pray it's back before I run out as it's the only thing that helps me and the generic doesn't work.

Thanks. I'll be picking up Rx for Xanax tomorrow. Hope it doesn't have too many side effects.

I called the Number too and I would suggest anyone who needs brand name Klon's to call!! They keep saying October but can't be certain but something about a regulatory problem; I said you would think there would be a public announcement. If we can get as many people as possible to call, they'll know we mean business!

I called in July, twice in August, 9-5-14, and today 9-17-14. I talked to a pharmacist the last 3 times, they always say the same thing about the regulatory issue. Today I asked if it was in production yet. She said no. I then said, nicely, well it would have to be in production now for it to be available the first week of October wouldn't it? She said she did not know. I asked what the lag time from production starting to getting it to the pharmacies was and she said she did not know. I tried to get more information, asked if there was anyone that could tell me when production would start, or when the testing would be completed, and she said no. It seems to me that they would have to start production soon in order for it to be available in October? Everyone that needs it should call and maybe someone else can get more information than I have been able to get.

My doctor will not prescribe brand name for Atavan or Xanax, and I can't take generics which he prescribed earlier. Have been to the ER and treated for anxiety, low potassium, etc. I've decided to try to continue the withdrawal from the benzodiazipides (sp) as I just recently read a research report about the link to alzheimers. Perhaps it could be the issue or the component of Klonopin that's been reviewed by the FDA. I asked the person at Genentech whom I spoke with if they were using something from China. She said she had no information about that. I think I'll suffer thru this and take melatonin at night. Have a few Ambien remaining but not sure I'll take them all.

Klonopin® Tablets

0.5 mg (NDC 0004-0068-01)

1.0 mg (NDC 0004-0058-01)

2.0 mg (NDC 0004-0098-01)

Genentech/Roche

Customer Number: 1 (877) GENENTECH (436-3683)

Klonopin is temporarily unavailable from Roche. Roche is projecting to resume supply of Klonopin tablets in October 2014. Generic clonazepam products are available on the market and there are no shortage issues.

I copied this straight from the FDA website on Drug Shortage where you type in the drug Klonopin and this is what I found.

True there are generic versions of Klonopin available but cannot take the generic. So it's tough trying new meds!

Sound4heaven: I went to the FDA shortage site and did not find any information on Klonopin. It was not listed on the shortage list. How did you find that on their site? I find it strange that the FDA does not have it listed on the shortage list, ESPECIALLY since Genentech keeps saying it is due to a regulatory compliance issue with the FDA on testing of the materials used to produce the medication. I do not understand why Genentech would not know when production would start. If it is due to testing... When is the next scheduled test? Hopefully, someone else will call and get a nice person who will give us more information.

I did find the information Sound4Heaven posted. It is not on the drug shortage list, but if you look at the top right search box on the FDA drugs website and type in ,Klonopin Roche 2014, it brings up titles to several articles, one of which is the one Sound4Heaven refers to. I do not think Genentech produces the drug, as I posted earlier, I found package inserts online that say the .5 mg is made in Switzerland and Distributed by Genentech. It was dated 12-2013, but I do not know if it is accurate. Just Google package insert klonopin.

I think it is strange that Genentech does not know the date production will start. It may be produced at another Roche site, but Genentech is the distributor and if it is due to a compliance issue with testing, Then When is the next test date?? I called again today, same thing just the recording.... with same message. More people should call and maybe someone can get more information than me.

Maybe an ineffective generic?
I've had them make me very sick.
Sadly Teva, the best, is no more.
But my hopes are on Actavis.
I was first Rx'd it 22 yrs ago for a seizure disorder.

Re: Benzo Madness (# 192) Expand Referenced Message

Where can I fill a prescription for Mex-Klon? And price per 1 mg pill? I have just found out the ONLY two generics I can tolerate, TEVA and MYLAN are no longer made. The 'real' Klonopin was priced to me at over $11 per 1 mg. And I take 3 per day! Always out of pocket.

In Toronto most pharmacies will use generics since "Roche" only produces a finite amount of tablets and Clonozepam, while being a "controlled substance", is still heavily prescribed by doctors.

It appears the FDA has allowed Roche to continue production. If you are in Ontario, I suggest visiting several pharmacies in order to obtain the original manufacturer Clonozepam tablets.

Re: Bonita B (# 7) Expand Referenced Message

Everyone is experiencing side effects from benzodiazepines, for they are damaging the Vagus nerve, which wines from the esophagus throughout the entire digestive tract. Symptoms can include: Nausea, vomiting, headache, diarrhea, constipation (feel like you have to go all the time but can't), irritability, bloating, gas, undigested food, light stool...if a person weans off these drugs it's withdrawal you are feeling. The only way to combat these symptoms is fresh fruits like apples, pears. Fresh vegetables if tolerated may have to cook, like carrots, sweet potato, cauliflower, Asparagus. Salmon, Cod, tuna fish, sardines. Try making a fruit smoothie to get the 2 fruits or 2 cups daily. We need 2 1/2 - 3 cups daily of vegetables. (More whole foods) Get private selection frozen fruits. To keep you in fruit in between fresh fruits. Better than canned. Apple cider, green tea, Chamomile tea, Dandelion, Burdock, teas, Kombachu Tea, fermented sauerkraut, plenty of "spring" water will help with resetting your digestive system. If you ever decide to wean off these destructive drugs. Google Vagus nerve damage from klonopin & xanax.

Genentech cannot change the formula and sell it as brand or even as the same medicine. But the purity of starting materials might be something that affects a few people. Glad it works for most people the same as before the 'klonopin drought' of 2014. :)

They stopped Production in January 2011 and it wasn't available until July 2011. Then 3 years later they stopped production again in 2014 and it was the last of October 2014 that it finally became available. In 2011 when it was back, I didn't notice any difference. In 2014 and 2015 I didn't notice any difference so far. It seems about the same but I hope nothing has changed the last of 2015 because that's what I'm talking now. I spoke to Genetech pharmacuetical back October 2014 they assured and insisted there have been no formulatory changes.

I have been taking brand name Klonopin for many years with good results and have been noticing that it's not working very well for a while now. I Di experiance the same as some posts here have mentioned that the company stopped production for a while and then they were made available again a few months later. I wonder if the formula has changed or if it's a change in me instead. Sure seems like a Coinsidance to me that after several years things have changed in my need to take more then usual and not getting good results as well
Anyone having a similar issue ????
