Ketamine For Depression? (Page 44)

Updated

It was recommended by the members of a separate thread that one be started that directly relates to ketamine and it's use to treat depression.

If anyone besides myself would like to discuss it's use as a treatment for depression, feel free to post your questions, answers and experiences here.

This thread is an offshoot of a related one that discussed a treatment of Scopolamine for depression.

You're welcome! There may be additional Ketamine clinics but this was what I found. Best wishes!

Hi JP. Your post is dated April of 2017. Now August 1st, are you still taking the oral ketamine and has it relieved your depression? I've tried every antidepressant available with no relief and now finding out about ketamine. It seems to be my only hope. Thanks for your help.

Emelie, I'll be honest...Ketamine, either orally or IV form hasn't been the panacea that I hoped it would be, at least for me. My first IV ketamine treatment (only after the 2nd infusion though) saved me from the worst depressive/suicidial thoughts I had in my life. However, after maintaining with oral ketamine 200mg, every 2nd night, for the past year, I've found it "lacking". It's been a huge problem for me to take it on an empty stomach before falling asleep (I find the disassociative effects if I'm awake distressing) just to get 20% bioavailability (any food in my stomach likely contributing to some ineffectiveness). I've also had 8 booster ketamine infusions in the US spread over the past 4 months and, in my opinion, the infusions have helped with the worst darkest depression and ruminations, but the anxiety that I have on a general basis and my chronic gloom and doom mentality has not been cleared. Granted, I'm exposed to a lot of sad/negative environmental factors, but so do a lot of people who don't suffer this disabling mental illness. I'm currently starting oral Moclobemide (300mg/day) for the first time as my primary antidepression med but I don't feel any effect after almost 2 weeks. After I've titrated to 600mg for a decent trial period, I'll be able to switch to trying oral ketamine troches (also compounded by pharmacies) which will increase how much gets to the brain without having to go through the gastric system. We'll see.

Ahedonia --

Did you have any luck getting ketamine IV in Toronto or London? My youngest daughter is desperate and nothing else, not even ECT, has helped much.

Dr. Hanna does ketamine infusion treatment at the Florida spine institute in Clearwater FL for a multitude of conditions & he & his team are wonderful! People come from all over the world & have moved there to be able to treat with him.

You are absolutely right, opioids are amazing for depression but the addictive qualities outweigh the benefits. Only thing that lifted the black cloud. I can see why kids turn to illicit drugs. Doctors know this but cannot prescribe opioids for depression.

I tried Ketamine treatment on my own few days ago.First time, 0.5mg/kg IM injection and i ended up laying on the floor for one hour. It hit me so hard, i thought that i was going to die.
After the hole came hangover, dizzines. No improvment from one treatment.
I checked the dosing and it was righ, 0.5mg per kg. I dont know why my body reacted like that.

I felt better 24 hours after my 1st Ketamine infusion. Doctor's recommend a series of 6 treatments for depression.

Re: SSSS (# 869) Expand Referenced Message

Total 0.5mg/kg is correct. However, never do it without capable and experienced medical supervision! The flow rate must be carefully regulated and you need to be monitored for oxygen and blood pressure over the 45-60 minutes! No wonder you were incapacitated.

Re: Guy In Toronto (# 868) Expand Referenced Message

My doctors do not permit me to disclose their names. They have very full practices and are not seeking any new patients. Sorry. There are doctors/psychiatrists at CAMH in Toronto that have experience with administering/prescribing ketamine - but you need a referral from at least a family doctor first.

Re: JPin Toronto (# 872) Expand Referenced Message

I found a Doctor in Toronto that administers Ketamine infusion and my GP put in a referral. My only hope is that they do what is adequate, 3-4 days straight of 2-3 hour infusions and then monthly boosters. I have heard some clinics will only do 1 single infusion once per month which from what I understand, does nothing. Thanks for getting back to me though. My fingers are crossed with this Doctor! I am looking into it for chronic pain and subsequent depression and anxiety.

May I ask how I could get in contact with this doctor in Toronto?

Re: Pat (# 874) Expand Referenced Message

Hi,

It’s via a pain clinic, so you will need a referral from your GP for a chronic pain condition. It is not a doctor who uses it for depression, rather, pain. But you should get some antidepressant effects from it if used properly for pain.

I am not comfortable giving out names of physicians online but if you {edited for privacy} I can send you the info.

Cheers.

Editor's note: Per our privacy policy we do not allow individuals to post their own personal contact information on our discussion threads. Please note however, that there is nothing wrong with sharing doctor information as long as it can be verified.

Hey all. Are there any doctors in PA or Maryland that legally prescribe ketamine and/or any other fast acting nmda drugs like esketamine, NIS189, or glyx-13 for treating severe depression? Would really appreciate it if anyone knew. Thanks.

Re: Guy in Toronto (# 875) Expand Referenced Message

I'm a bit confused, Guy. At one point you say that your drs aren't accepting more patients but then state that with a referral to the pain clinic you use, one could possibly receive ketamine transfusions. Are you getting transfusions for pain but also have depression? I have both refractory depression and significant pain from arthritis. I've never found any lasting relief for either. There are several pain clinics in Toronto. I realize that you can't provide a name but maybe an intersection? Thanks, Joseph.

Re: JPinToronto (# 864) Expand Referenced Message

All the research I've done suggests that oral ketamine is not nearly as effective as transfusion. Jansen is working on a nasal esketamine spray and there is a possibility it could be available this year. Trials have been promising and they were granted breakthrough status a year or two ago. I tried to get into a trial but was deemed ineligible due to concomitant conditions.

Re: Joseph (# 877) Expand Referenced Message

Hey Joseph, I didn’t say they were not accepting patients, that was a different poster. Yes it is at a pain clinic in Toronto as I have severe nerve pain and subsequent depression. Look up Alevvio.

Re: Guy (# 879) Expand Referenced Message

Thanks, Guy. I realized my error right after I posted. I have nerve pain as well, and ankylosing spondilytis. I'm starting a medication for that in a few days. If that doesn't work then I'll look up Alevio.
