Jaw Bone Deterioration

Updated

I had two Reclast intravenous drugs; one in '08 & '09. In 2008 I had sinus lift augmentation with placement of 10 implants. In 2011, I lost one implant on the top & in 2012, I lost another implant on top again. I went to see my oral surgeon in July '12 and he told me that there was nothing he could do to help me as the bone in my upper jaw is severely deteriorated. Then I went to see a Prosthrodontist in Baltimore and he too could not make me a plate due to the severity of the upper bone. I subsequently learned that I cannot sue the drug company because they put on there indications about possible Jaw Bone problems. I do not remember my doctor telling me about the jaw bone problems prior to having the oral surgery. I am 63 years old & now left to flounder because once the other implants fall out on the top, not only will I be toothless, but boneless as well. At this point, suing the drug company is useless to me because all the money in the world won't bring back my bone! However, I would like to tell anyone out here in "internet land", if you are planning on having sinus lift and implants DO NOT have Reclast intravenous!

Have you talked to an oral surgeon about having bone grafts done?

They are often used in denture wearers who have lost a lot of bone, so that they can successfully wear dentures or have implants.

Learn more bone grafting details here.

Almost anyone that has had all their teeth removed will eventually suffer loss of the jaw bone, though the severity can vary, but many do end up needing grafting done to solve the problem.

Yes, I have spoken to my oral surgeon & even to the top Prosthrodontist at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD and they both told me that I am not a candidate for bone grafting because of my health issues. I had gastric bypass in '06 & afterwards had to have my entire stomach removed....that is one of the reasons why they won't do the bone grafting as they feel, I would not make it out of surgery if they did!
