Itching Withdrawal From Cetirizine Or Zyrtec (Page 24)

Updated

I want to know how many are suffering from withdrawal from this drug that causes itching all over the body. At the people's pharmacy there is an article about this very problem, yet Zyrtec doesn't list the information on their web site. This is my third attempt to get off of this med and I'm going crazy from the itching.

Hi guys, the internal itching is somewhat over and I feel less like I'm dying from a burning itch. But now it's becoming more like a regular hive situation where I get big patches of hives here and there (I had lesser hives and more internal itching previously). Not sure if it's a normal occurance?

Parasite, I was wondering what exactly did you use to deworm? I am interested in deworming for my family since we also suffer from allergies.

I took zyrtec for 1 month and then switched back to claritin. I started itching insanely the first day I stopped. It is day 9 and I am still itching. I did not get hives just extreme itching on my scalp and arms and legs. It is painful. I went to my doctor but I didn't mention this because I had no clue. Then I mentioned it to a pharmacy tech and they instantly knew. I am still miserable and furious. My doctor put me on a itching medication with anxiety meds because its that bad. I took it once and realized I couldn't take it either. I am tired of benadryl and tired of itching. I feel there should be a legal suit as this is ridiculous. Thoughts people?

86 days… Today marks 86 days of being Zyrtec free. I took it for 7 years. I initially took it for a blocked ear and then every time I went off it, I started the insane itching and hives. Many doctors and tests later, I was told I had chronic idiopathic urticaria… the doctor’s way of saying “you have hives, we don’t know what is causing it, and chances are it won’t go away”. I was told to continue taking the Zyrtec. After much research back in May, I have come to the conclusion that the Zyrtec confused my body and since the antihistamine is controlling a reaction not a cause, I chose to go off it and try and get my body to remember what it is supposed to do. The first three weeks were horrible. I had to wear long sleeves and pants and gloves to work because anything that slightly brushed me caused a chain reaction of hives and intolerable itching. I have documented this with video and pictures. For those still suffering, I went cold turkey. It is still there 86 days later, HOWEVER… it is much, much, much better. The palms of my hands and soles of my feet no longer itch. My head no longer itches, nor my eyes or gums. My back, arms and legs are the most sensitive and it now just feels like I am wearing wool. The pain and intense itching that accompanied the hives has definitely improved. What has worked for me is heat. I have used the heating pad, hot, hot showers, and the hair dryer on high heat. It is not gone completely yet, but I will say there is hope. Hang in there.

I am at day 15. I was on in it for 30 days and the itching is insane. I have been to my doctor twice and today was put on a steroid to basically reset my body before Zyrtec.

Omg. I been taking Zyrtec for the past 20 years. My allergies are not only seasonal . If I don't take my Zyrtec at night my eyes itch horrible and my troath is even worse. I read that this pill cause liver problems. Maybe this is why I have melasma.
Does anyone knows a holistic approach for this problem ? I want to stop taking this Med. But I really need something for my rhinitis .

I had been taking cetrizine hydrochloride for 17yrs or so daily for an itch which I believe started out with stress and taking codeine but I was diagnosed as being allergic to something in the air hence daily meds without them I would have itched till I bled. I've wandered for quite some time ifor i was addicted to the cetrizine so I decided just over 2mths ago after reading this forum that I was gonna come off them as I felt it confirmed that the cetrizine was the problem. I have not taking another pill since. For the 1st 2 weeks it wasn't easy and I used doterra oils to help me through but I haven't even had to use them lately. Proud to say im now antihistamine free i still get the odd itch but it doesn't require meds anymore. Good luck folks u can do this ??

I started taking cetrizine for the same reason. Chronic rhinitis even though I never had problems with this when I was younger. I stopped taking cetrizine in May. I used half a loratadine for when the itching became unbearable. I took nettle extract capsules to help with the tingly nose and used beconase to deal with the inflamed sinuses. I regularly rinsed my nose with neti pot. I also took quercetin and vitamin C. Slowly my sinuses calmed down completely and the itching became less and less intense. I believe the cetrizine also caused my rhinitis, explosive sneezing in the mornings, post nasal drip, insomnia and weight gain. It is now 4 months since I've taken cetrizine and I now rarely need anything. Even my sleep hay fever no longer troubles me.

I am on the dreaded day 3 of no cetirizine. I only took it for about 3 month but not daily. I took it because of a reaction to a spider bite so I would take it a few days, skip and break out, and take it again thinking it must still be the spider neurotoxins in my system. I was not aware the itch was from withdrawal until someone mentioned it sounded like I was having an allergic reaction to Zyrtec. So I stopped taking it 2 days ago and now the itch almost has me in a mental institution. That's when I started researching the chemical and found the withdrawal symptoms. I use doterra oils. Which oils do you recommend for relief from the itch?

Amy, I understand that you don't want to get off of it because it relieves your symptoms, what happened with me is I started having side effects from it. Then when I decided to get off because of the side effects the itching started. And I was only on it off and on for a 2 months for a reaction to a spider bite.

I am sick to my stomach, knowing that they never disclosed this information. I had insomnia, heart palpitations, dizziness, weight gain, poor eye vision, loss of hearing and a horrible itch, which I still have

It's been a month and the itch was better but now starting up again. I have had insomnia and anxiety

I did too. I found camomile tea before bed helped. If it's really bad, Californian Poppy tincture is very helpful for both anxiety and insomnia. Hang in there, it will slowly get better. Just stay away from cetrizine. :-)

I was taking this medication for almost 2 weeks because I'm allergic to cats. We were on vacation visiting my in laws. My mother in law has a cat and I knew that it would have been a miserable vacation if I didn't take something for that. So I went to my doctor, told him about my situation and he prescribed zyrtic. So now I'm back home. I have no pets. I washed all of my clothes but I started to itch really bad on my feet, legs, hands and on my neck. Not only that I'm also experiencing a horrible cough. It's the most uncomfortable feeling and after reading the withdrawal affects, I believe that I'm withdrawing from this medication. I feel like I'm going crazy. All I want is for this cough to go away and to not feel dizzy or itchy. I honestly don't know if going to the doctor will help at this point. Any advise?

I'm on day five of going cold turkey. I truly can't even believe I am here writing this comment right now considering my mindset has always been 'well, it's over the counter so it can't be addictive or bad for me..'
Then recently I started watching 'celebrity rehab' and it occurred to me that I myself had been taking this medication daily for several years thinking it was just a harmless way of easing the constant hay fever I was suffering from.
After not being able to sleep last night and scratching the hell out of myself I thought 'Jesus, I was never THIS allergic to everything before I started taking cetrizine, maybe I really do need at least one a day to hold off all the itching' then I found this thread and I'm in tears from the relief of knowing I'm not the only person who has experienced this. I'm still itchy as hell but F cetrizine. F the doctors and pharmacys for recommending this clearly toxic substance! Ask anyone who has now experienced the withdrawal from this drug - this is a severe and serious issue that more people should be made aware of! Especially when it is so easy to get ahold of! This is a hardcore drug you can pick straight off the supermarket shelf at any age! Something should be done about this, I am absolutely horrified at what my body has now been through in only five days of stopping, without anything to warn people of this on the label, this substance should be banned.

I saw some information of the Flood Law Group regarding a potential legal case. I too am curious as to how to initiate some type of litigation. These withdrawal symptoms are unbearable, it's ludicrous that this can be happening to so many people and Zytrec & the FDA make no acknowledgement that a HUGE problem exists.

If anyone gets info on a legal case, please share.

I think we all agree that this should not be allowed to continue without calling attention to it and potentially saving someone else from developing what may be a debilitating condition that can last indefinitely.
