Is She Trying To Quit?

Updated

My son's girl friend is a recovering drug addict. She was doing really well until her lung collapsed, landing her in the hospital for three days. The doctors had her on STRONG pain meds by mouth and by IV. She was scared to death that when she got out she would have withdraws. The doctor put her on suboxone strips. She moved in with me so I could monitor her intake of meds. She told me to give her one SUBOXONE in the morning and one at night. She has been nodding out at the computer, on the phone, eating, talking, standing, and now she is demanding two strips in the morning. I told her if she took both strips in the morning she would have none in the evening, she didn't care. I took her to see a shrink and she came out of the office very mad saying that she never wanted to go back because the shrink won't give her meds. Even though she SAYS she wants to be clean her actions speak differently. I don't know what to tell my son, who is out of town right now. What do you think? It has only been three days now and she is acting like she needs all kinds of different meds all the time. HELP!

You're the one dealing with her, so only you can really judge what her actions are saying and I say trust your gut. You're a mother, you know how to certain things, even if the person isn't your child, it's just something you learn.

And to be honest, she's engaging in classic drug seeking behavior, especially storming out of the Psych's office.

Learn more Suboxone details here.

You're a great person for trying to help, but when it comes down to the bare facts, she may need more help than you can give, since you aren't specially trained to deal with this.

Have you considered getting her into specialized treatment, or addiction counseling?

I was on saboxion but they never made me nod. They are highly addictive and hard to kick. The insurence companies only pay for one year then your on your own.
Just to let you know I'm in the hospital now trying to kick soboxion. good luck get off them now.

I myself have SEEN and EXPERIENCED nodding from suboxone.
BUT....
if she has previously been on it, and is USED to it, even if only off of it for a short time(month or so) then a single strip should NOT be making her nod off. though everyone reacts differently to medication, that just seems odd. is she hasn't been on it for a long time, then it could also actually make her nod off, AND could possibly make her get "that itch to try OTHER things again as well.(a type of "wow, if THIS makes me feel THIS "good", then I bet xx would make me feel even better" mindset)
I wasn't aware that "shrink"could prescribe suboxone, I thought they mainly did anxiety& mood changers.
which is what brings me to my next thought, things I've seen that almost always makes people nod off are xanax, kolonpin, and valium, so if she was getting THOSE from shrink or elsewhere, they could be the cause of the nods.

be viligant, these types of meds can take over someone's life very quickly, I know first-hand, I'm trying like heck to stop suboxone, but it's so hard, but also remember, if the person isn't ready themself, going off of suboxone could be very dangerous, the person could turn to something else to try to ease the pain, and I've lost quite a few friends who went that way, turning to old habits or even trying something for the first time, only to never see them again.
