Is Levothyroxine 112 Discontinued?

I have been taking levothyroxine for a few years and I went to a different Drug Store to get a refill of levothyroxine and was given synthroid. I requested they give me levothyroxine and I was told that levothyroxine is no longer being produced. I can't understand why my doctor wouldn't know this or did the drug store misinform me? I can't call the doctor till Thur. but just wanted to know if anyone else hear this?

I'm not sure but one of the comments below stated something about a recall on levothyroxine. It also states that they were unable to find a reason why.

I went to the drug store I normally used in the past and they told me that they never hear of levothyroxine being discontinued. I just can't believe that someone at a well known drug store chain would lie to me. Today I'm going to my doctor because the prescription was called in by him to see exactly what was requested. I have a feeling that it all has to do with the money and what they can charge for synthroid.

Hi, Ann! I'm sorry that you're having such a problem.

The accurate information is that there is currently a shortage of Levothyroxine, it has been reported to the FDA and was filed with them on April 29, 2013. No reason has been given, but one of the doses in the listing as filed is for the 112mcg dosage that you were taking.

The name brand is still available, as you were given from the pharmacy, but the shortage of the generics is expected to continue into mid-2014.

One manufacturer of Levothyroxine, Forrest Pharmaceuticals, did discontinue manufacturing at the end of 2012. There patent expired, so now other Pharmas make it. It wasn't a complete discontinuation of the Levo drug, just the one you (and I) used to get.
