How Long Does It Take For Miralax To Leave The Gut

Updated

My 8 yro son took miralax for 10 days for his constipation. He stopped taking it 2 days ago and is still having very loose bowel movements almost hourly. How long will this continue? I'm at my wits end, his bottom is getting very sore.

In my opinion, it would be good for him to try and consume more binding foods, such as bananas, to help slow down and regulate his bowel movements. It's difficult to say how long one can experience loose bowel movements, since everyone reacts differently to these types of medications.

Was the Miralax dose taken exactly as indicated on labeling (it says 'once each day' on Miralax's webpage)? I only ask because it does sound like he had a bit too much. I know this response is a day after your post, so I do hope that he is feeling better by now.

Thanks for the advice David. He was prescribed 2 doses a day by his pediatrician for severe constipation. He used to eat a lot of bananas, which became part of his problem. I called his doctor about it today and she said to start back on miralax at a lower dose. As there may still be some stool still in there. By the way he is better now.

I hate it when people on these forums don't answer the questions people ask, but instead post a bunch of words that ultimately say they don't have the answer. If you can't answer someone's question, then don't post!!!

I had severe constipation. I then had surgery, was on pain meds, which made it worse. I was given stool softeners, senna, milk of mag, then Miralax was started daily, plus I had an enema. I finally did have a BM, but stayed on the Miralax. I haven't hand any bowel meds for at least a week now, but I have several thick, loose stool several times a day. The stool is so thick that I have to actually clean myself each time I go into the bathroom. I still also have a lot of gas. I'm at my wits end! Can someone guide me please?

I know this is an old post but I felt compelled to answer anyway. I used Miralax for six months and decided to stop. It took over ONE MONTH for all the Miralax to leave my system. By then I started getting constipated again. That's how you will know it's gone MIT takes 3-5 days to build up in your system and stays with you at least a month. I even called the Miralax hotline number and they didn't even know this about their product. Anyway-- it's not regularity it's the Miralax. You will find out more after one month. FYI

I'm terrified. I have been taking it for almost 4 years daily! I am having seizures, out of control anger, memory loss, and more. I have to get off of it but I don't have bowel movements without it. Still I don't care. I want it out of my system and I am so afraid of the likely brain damage it has caused, based on my headaches and everything I'm reading.

I only took this product once and it's destroying my stomach. Is it supposed to cause that? It really hurts to the point where I actually cried. Not only that, but I also threw it up due to nausea from it. Is this normal or just how I react to MiraLAX?

That terrifies me! I just took it for 3 consecutive days and it started to work but at the same time it was taking away the effects of my antibiotic anxiety medication... I quit taken the Miralax and it took 3 days for me to get my sanity back. I had no idea Miralax was making me feel like I was going crazy. It's like coming off of an anti depressant.... if I need relief I will start using enemas.

I worry about being too far from a bathroom because of this stuff. After a hemoroid repair I was told by the PA to take a full dose (capful) daily. Subsequent BM were not exactly loose, but soft, and I was having to go with very little warning and unable to hold it! After the PA didn't pay any mind to my concerns, I reduced the Miralax to 1 tsp & 1 tsp Metamucil daily. This just extends BM from about every other day to about 3-5 day, and I still have run to the bathroom desperately, as it is nearly impossible to hold it.

I was taking it because I didn't have a bm a week and my mom finally took me off it yesterday.

Mirilax issues; I didn't get feedback from my initial entry.

I was put on this to clean me out for a colonoscopy. I took 238 gr and nothing happened so i took another 238 gr two days later with 3.5 days of clear liquid diet.
I don't feel like myself, my energy level is down and I wonder how long till this is out of my system.

You just added to the pool of people who commented but didn't answer the question being asked. Maybe you should take your own advice of "If you can't answer the questions that people ask then don't comment".

ONLY drink it if a Dr tells you! You are way too young to take it without Dr orders.
