How Long After My Last Suboxone Dose Can I Take My First 50mg Dose Of Naltrexone??

Updated

Hey guys my name is Steven and i was recently sober for 3 months and frequently attending AA/NA meetings. Unfortunately two weeks ago i decided to pick up some H and i went on a two week run. i decided to stop what i was doing knowing it wasnt going anywhere good so i called my friend who has suboxone and i picked up one from him,I split the 8mg in half taking 4mg on the second day of WD and then taking the other 4mg on the next day. After the last dose which was Three days ago now i told myself im done with all of it. I suprisingly dont feel that bad right now thank god.Now back to my question, I have a prescription at home for Naltrexone 50mg to be taking in the morning and at night. How long do i have to wait before i can start taking them??? im anxious to get started as long as it doesnt cause precipitated withdrawal. it sucks because my insurance company wont approve the vivitrol shot :( I really wanna stay clean ..

Hi Steve,

Glad to hear that you made it out of the woods as far as withdrawals are concerned. I'm a little confused though as to why you'd even need to take Naltrexone at all after coming off of H and Suboxone with no real withdrawal problems? Naltrexone is intended for treating dependence issues with opioids and alcohol, but would seem pointless if you're doing just fine without them.

However, to help answer your question about when to start taking them, some patients recommend waiting several days for the Suboxone to clear your system. In your case though, having only taken two doses of Suboxone, three days seems adequate in my opinion. Though I'd still recommend discussing this with your doctor before making any haste decisions, just to play it safe.

Does anyone else have advice from personal experience?

Put on 2mg/.5 suboxone 2x a day for chronic back pain. Started last wed morning. It helps a lot with pain but, 7-8hrs after my dose my pain is back bad. He told me to take 6,8 or 12hrs apart. Ive been trying to take it 10 or 12 hrs but end up taking it 8-10 hrs and by then im in real pain. Shouldn't he maybe add a 3rd dose (every 6 hrs). I think the 2mg/.5 is ok if I had a 3rd dose. Otherwise increase 2mg to 4mg?

72 hours minimum. Naltrexone can be quite painful when your receptors are saturated with opioids. Subs may be stronger than naltrexone at bonding, but better to play it safe.

So I've been tapering off subs for quite a few months. I can literally take a strip and cute it into 10 pieces, and those are the doses I have been taking My dr wants to put me on the vivitrol shot so he prescribed me 50mg naltrexone pills for one week to make sure I have no ill side effects to the shot- but like I said, yesterday, I took that piece of suboxone. I'm supposed to get his shot in one week. I don't have time to be sick so when would be a safe time to start the naltrexone pills?? Or am I screwed??

I've been on Naltrexone several times. Its excellent to help with cravings and to stay clean because you don't feel high/opiates don't work when taking this properly. When I was in full blown addiction, and then also having a buprinex shot at detox, I still had to be off everything for a min of 4-5 days. If you start taking Naltrexone too soon, you will go into withdrawals and they can be very nasty. I was 2 days off of the bup. shot and took a 50mg Naltrexone and ended up so sick. And the shot was tapered down to only a half dose.. So if you have been taking anything with any type of opiate/derivative (including detox methods) safest would be anywhere from 4/5 days on. Some doctors and literature even say 7 days earliest. Naltrexone has no opiate in it and is not addicting and does not need to be tapered down when you want to stop using it. If you take opiates while on it, you will not feel high. Basically you feel nothing because it blocks it. But reverse and take Naltrexone right after or during opiate use..expect nasty withdrawals.

Hi there! So I have been taking subs off the streets for 4 months now to kick my opiate addiction, I finally decided to go to a Dr and get a script for subs because I don't want to live this life anymore. She prescribed me 8mg suboxone and 15 mg naltrexone, so I decided to do more research or naltrexone because she's foreign and I couldn't understand wtf she was saying.. I'm beginning to think she's trying to kill me because of what I'm reading about DO NOT TAKE NALTREXONE UNTIL YOUR OFF SUBS OR YOULL GO INTO PRECIPITATED WITHDRAWAL. SO I saw that and it scared me to death. I still haven't taken the naltrexone but I am taking the subs. She told me a sub in the morning and a naltrexone at night. I'm starting to get angry because I think she's stupid but at the same time she prescribed it to me for a reason.... I don't know what to do. I hope someone has had a similar situation as me. I've never posted on any site like this before but idk what else to do, my next app isn't for another 2 weeks... Please and thank you

I know 2 people who did they I thought it was illegal in US now? It was hell for both and didn't help either. Sorry but that is the truth. I wouldn't take it sick or not. It only makes you sicker. I hope I am thinking of the same medication. The narcaine challenge? If not sorry.

I know it's a late response but that Dr needs their license pulled. I hope you didn't do as she prescribed. You must get off the suboxone for a few days before starting naltrexone. And altering them morning and night like she wanted you to do you would be in withdraws constantly. That being said try to get on the naltrexone injection it's once a month and it is amazing. Good luck to you.

Suboxone takes approx. 36 hours for half of it to clear your system. Take as little as possible. In my opinion no u shouldn't take anymore. It's very powerful only a partial opiate. So taking more will not help 2mg a day should be enough. If u take it long term will be hell to get off of. I know I took it just for pain also.

Hello. I am currently detoxing from Suboxone and plan on Naltrexone and then the shot. Please be very careful, everything my doctors have said and everything that I’ve read is opposite of what you are describing. I would suggest a second opinion. Take care.

Re: David (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

Suboxone could take up to 2 weeks depending on your age weight dosage etc. you could put yourself in serious withdrawal and in the E.R. consult a Doctor who is a specialist in Subs,Methadone,Naltrexone withdrawal !

No narcaine shot is used when you od. Its supposed to push all of yhe opiates outta your system right away sobu dont die. N if u wake up instead of dying, u r super awake n sick. U feel like dying but atleast ur alive.

DONT DO THAT. PLEASE!! I LOST TWO WHOLE DAYS OF MY LIFE TRYING THAT.....had been on Subs for quite a while i wanted off of them. A dr gave me naltrexone tablets. I had been off Subs 8 days so i took one 50 mg tablet, drove straight home (thank God) by the time i got outa the car at home i collapsed. I went through two days of hell. Thought i was gonna snap my own back in two. My wife had to call the parametics cause i was unresponsive. Im 46 and have struggled with addiction most of my life. Thought id seen a thing or two, WELL, that was before this. Make sure you test negative on a drug panel first.

Re: Averymua (# 9) Expand Referenced Message

My quick opinion is that suboxone is the worst of all. Out of heroin, methadone, oxycontin etc...Suboxone had the longest most awful drawn out withdrawal process. My advice is coming from personal experience, I am no doctor but I would say stop the suboxone asap and then start the naltrexone. If you keep on the subs much longer you likely will be on them forever and the longer you take them the more negative side effects you will notice. I would say after my one year mark was the worst. I was not even a real person living life anymore. Doctors that prescribe these types of drugs for maintenance are typically just looking at us in terms of harm reduction and nothing more than a number.
