How To Snort The New Formula Opana Er (Page 11)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I became a pain patient after I fell off a horse in March of last year and sustained spinal injuries which are still VERY painful. Opana ER was the first thing doctors gave me that helped at all and now that they have changed the formula I'm in a lot more pain. I want to break down the formula so I can insufflate it, as I am told I may get more pain relief and increase bioavailability of the drug. The new formula hardly offers the same pain relief, Please help me!

Brian...how are you friend? When I had to take Opana, my doctor told me it was not a 24 hour relief, maximum 8-10 Relief..so he prescribed me 3/day for a 24 hour relief, it worked ok, but not enough to make me feel the way I do now thats for sure...

So your getting relief from this new doses of medicine now? I hope it goes well for you. We always have to keep in our minds that we as chronic patients will never be pain free all at once, but if we can lesson it substantially then were definitely strong enough to handle the rest of the pain with our minds positive and strong, bodies ready...its all about you, us, and me..its only all of us, who can make that decision to either loose or win..And we all...are winners already, by joining this forum, arms out, feelings told, to be able to help yourself, but better yet maybe have that one chance to make a impression on "that person" who needs help..were all here for a good reason, any bad reasons can be thrown over your shoulder, never look back, and do it with a strong straight backside...

Lets stay on this forum more consistantly, so if anyone has a question or concern, then one of us will be here to help or give advice to possible resources too...I promise I will commit more time for you guys , soo also, we can start posting funny things too. I thought maybe a couple days we could do some funny postings to help lighten the mood and heighten the endocrine system and make smiles...;))))

So lets just post our feelings too, these are what can lead to our possible addictions or past addictions..it helps to get things out, "out of the shell"..IM HERE...

My pain doctor agrees that the Opana ER doesn't really last 12hrs for most people. He always gives the medication as the daily dose divided by three (3).
I think this helps quite a bit, as you don't have to worry about taking the med "on time" every day. It keeps me out of pain, and is an easy fix for any 12hr dose medication!

Les, You're absolutely right when you said that Opana ER doesn't work!! It's designed as a 12hr. medication but one of the problems is that a lot of people defecate long before 12hrs. and some of the medication is lost. I'm currently on it myself. I've called Endo Pharmaceuticals and talked to a pharmacist there about his product. He told me that it wasn't designed as a break through pain reliever, meaning relatively short duration pain, so I asked him at what point will I, or anyone, feel anything from this worthless drug? Didn't have any answer of course. Some people swear by them.

To vktoria (and all). Good morning V. Sorry about my belated response. My little buddy & major part of my life, Princess, has passed on to the next stage of her life the eve of 3/31/13. She was 17 years old and is sorely missed. I've been struggling with depression as well and I've been finding it hard to do anything these days.
Thank you for the heads up regarding my medication change but all that has happened was after my Dr. jumping through a bunch of hoops and me trying out different meds united healthcare FINALLY approved the medication exception after taking oxycontin off their formulary and me being on it for over a decade. I had a medication regime that worked and when something works one does not change it. I'm really hoping that the A.C.A. will improve issues like this one when it comes online in 2014.

I was taking Opana ER for almost 3 years when they reformulated them. I'm 50 years old and I exist in chronic pain because of 2 car accidents. I have spinal injuries on top of an arthritic spine. Like others here, I am not an addict looking for a high. I need to function.
I take care of my two elderly parents. They need me.
Anyway, I was so pleased when my doctor switched me to the Opana ERs. I was on Oxycontin before and Percocet for breakthrough pain. They left me feeling light-headed, but still in pain. Opana was like a miracle.
I even had spinal surgery and that didn't work. At least the Opana allowed me to function almost normally.
Now I am so disgusted since they reformulated them.
Not only do they not work, my insurance will no longer cover them anyway. The cost is too high.
The worst part is I am also a drug counselor. I know this nanny-state solution causes a new set of problems.
Many opiate addicts have gone back to using heroin.
While the police force and politicians brag about the prescription drug overdose declining, I wonder what has happened to the heroin overdose rate. I would bet my meager bank account that it has gone up dramatically.
That is only one problem this progressive idea from the government's FDA causes. Addicts don't think about overdose. An addict will take 5 Opana ER pills at one shot. They will think if you have more slow release in your system, it will get them high. They can end up overdosing that way. The other problem is the fillers. If an addict snorts or injects these fillers, it can cause a blockage in their heart. That is one statistic they will never link to the reformulation. They won't keep track, but they should.
You cannot save an addict from his addiction. They won't stop if they don't want to. All this FDA intervention does is create a small, speed bump. It has taken one of their options away. However, addicts are incredibly resourceful. They almost always find a way when they want to use. Many will die because of the reformulation of these drugs. Many will and have turned to Heroin.
It is actually much safer for an opiate addict to get a pre-measured amount of the drug, guaranteed not to be cut with rat poisoning or other lethal substances than buy Heroin on the streets.
And see, that is part of the problem. They don't really care about heroin addicts. They see prescription pill abusers as "normal" people. They live in the suburbs. They're your kids, your neighbor's wife and even that nice mailman with the back brace.
Meanwhile, chronic pain sufferers like us are left to suffer. I remember the president once said, "Maybe you're better off just taking the pain pill than having the surgery." Well, now they have made it difficult to take the pain pill.
Every time I take my Morphine ER (which does nothing for my pain), I think about these things and I get so angry. To add to my medication problems, I live in Florida where they had a big crackdown on pill mills.
It's gotten very difficult to find a pharmacy that has my medication They are all limited to certain quantities per month and when they are out, you are forced to drive around and call other pharmacies just to find your pain meds.
I was looking forward to the patent running out for Opana ER. It ran out in January. So far, there isn't a generic version available in pharmacies. I guess like Oxycontin, it is being held up by the FDA. Big Pharma is not happy that they paid million to create this useless, new formulation. They are going to fight the FDA if they start letting other drug companies make the drug again. Just think how much money they used. A much more effective, generic version would make their brand-name formula obsolete, Who would buy it?

The only pill that helps me now is the Opana Immediate release. I am only allowed 2 per day and they last about 3 hours. They're supposed to last 4-6, but I am lucky to get three hours of relief. Most pharmacies in Florida refuse to carry it just like the immediate Oxycodone.

Meanwhile, we legitimate, chronic pain patients just keep suffering while bureaucrats try to save addicts from hurting themselves. It's an impossible task.

Kratom is a medicinal herb, the leaf of the kratom tree. It has been used traditionally for pain relief and to fight fatigue in its native Southeast Asia for thousands of years. Opium addiction has been a concern in this area and kratom has been known for centuries to ease the effects of withdrawal from opiates. The active alkaloids in kratom interact with the same opioid receptors as codeine but to a lesser degree, and kratom is not addicting.
Contrary to reports in the media, kratom is not a new ‘legal high.’ The kratom tree is in the same family as coffee and has about as much potential for abuse. Kratom is legal to use in the US and has become a popular herbal remedy for chronic pain and as an energy boost. Users report that small amounts of kratom (5-6 grams) provide a lift similar to coffee while larger doses (8-10 grams) are relaxing.

There is more to it then what you think. There are groups trying to stop strong pain meds be given to people with chronic pain. They want it only given to people with cancer plus these groups and the FDA don't care what works the best for our pain they are more concerned about the druggies getting a hold of pain meds that can be abused. There is something wrong with the plastic meds. They do not control pain as well as the originals. I think the plastic pills don't break up in our system like it should and they don't know the crap they are made of could cause cancer. There are so many rules in place for chronic pain patients to receive pain meds now. The law just needs to make sure they are followed instead of trying to make people suffer with chronic pain. I have pulled up report after report what groups and FDA, police, etc. say. It is getting out of hand. We are going to lose and suffer for it. Its just like the New York mayor tried to make a law go through that large sodas couldn't be sold in New York. The courts stopped it for now. That just a couple of things going on. I know sodas aren't good for you but I don't drink them but I'm glad I have that choice. I want the choice to be able to take something for my chronic pain that works for me and I can afford and live my life the best I can and not have to lay in bed all day and miss out on my family because of my awful pain.

You really answered your own question. Endo was or still is trying to defend themselves against several lawsuits. They can't have a monopoly simple as that.

WHY Endo wants generic Opana to go away.

Competitive Advantage

U.S. law is intended to foster competition in the drug industry. Whenever a patent on a drug expires, the Hatch-Waxman Act is supposed to make it relatively fast and easy for competitors to put generic versions on the market.

Such competition is good for consumers, health care providers, the government and everyone else who pays for prescription medicines because it slashes the price of drugs. “The first generic version of a drug causes the price to drop dramatically. The second generic onto the market drops the price to peanuts,†says Prof. Marsha Cohen of University of California Hastings Law School.

These price drops can grievously injure the profits of innovative drug companies, so these businesses have a powerful incentive to delay generic competition to their popular products for as long as possible. “Given the amount of money involved—sometimes billions per year, often hundreds of millions per year—any additional exclusivity period is worthwhile. Even an additional six months of exclusivity can bring nine figures in additional revenue,†says Anthony Fitzpatrick, a partner at Duane Morris.

I hate to bring it up, but May is coming and the FDA may stop the generic Opana Oxymorphone. Everyone needs to let them know how the generic works better than the new Opana. Read below.

Among the unsolved issues cited by FDA are specific testing standards for crush-resistance, which the agency said it was still developing.

The insistence on developing standards may, itself, be an indication that the agency is planning to implement such requirements.

FDA also said there was "no evidence that in enacting section 505(q) of the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act, Congress intended to short-circuit the application review process or to vitiate an ANDA applicant's procedural rights by requiring that the Agency make decision on scientific issues specific to pending applications."

"For the reasons described in this response, the petition is denied," FDA concluded.

Endo's December 2012 lawsuit saw a response from FDA indicating that it will issue a determination on the larger issues related to crush-resistance and whether generics may enter the market without them by May 2013.

In a letter sent to US legislators in early January 2013, Margaret Hamburg indicated that the agency is leaning toward requiring generic opioids to possess crush-resistant and other abuse-deterrent qualities, writing that FDA "shares those concerns" held by legislators that generic versions of the drug would be dangerous without resistance qualities.

Why thank you Brein! I AM feeling better. It helps to have the best Dr. in CT. The man has bent over backwards for me and with his schedule that's not an easy task. Enough about me. How are you doing? I probably won't get back to my PC for a day or 2. In the mean time enjoy the holiday and stay well.
Peace.

To John...;)

Im very happy to hear you will finally be in less pain my friend. I hear that medicine is pretty strong, be careful it may upset your stomach and digestive system for awhile or while your on the medicine. Iv never went that strength in pain meds, was scared to take that route in all honesty, Iv heard some bad stories of Oxy's..Be careful my friend, you sound good now, I just dont want "IT" to take control of the mind as well as the body...I know you are happy, as I am for you..Im very happy to hear you dont snort it too, if you ever have and you dont have to say, resist them temptation for a bad road to overcome. I am not lecturing, just care about many of you on here as we have talked regularly now, shared thoughts, and become global friends...

If anyone feels the need to say thoughts to control their pain in any other way than it should be, just jot down what your feeling or thinking ok..were all here to help, and have taken paths of all choices..so were here...;) No Judgement..

John, Im so happy your feeling better and doing good...I wish YOU and EVERYONE to have a great weekend and HAPPY HOLIDAY..;)

To Vktoria. Hello right back and I'm doing much much better thanks for asking. After 2 months of going through hellish bull* #*@ my insurance company finally granted me an exception and I am back on oxycontin. It's un-freaking-believable! I've been using them for years (along with Methadone) and they have done a good job of managing my pain when UHC decided to take oxy off their formulary. I was told it was because of their tendancy for abuse. I told the representative politely that what she just said was bull. Purdue reformulated the pills and made them... "unsnortable" so would please just be honest and it was about the companies bottom line ($$$). To make a long babble short, I had to try not 1 but 2 new pain meds before UHC would grant the exception. I tried morphine sulphate 60mg and opana 20mg. One had me nodding off and the other hardly touched my pain. When it was reported by my MD that both had failed to help me, they finally granted me the exception... for a freaking year! So I guess I have this to look forward to again in 2014. Joy. How are you doing? Gotta go catch the bus. Hope all is well.
Peace
John P
