what is the difference between gabapentin rx and otc gaba
4 Replies RSS
I want to know the difference between GABAPENTIN a RX and OTC GABA? ## Hello, Pamela! How are you? There are two completely different substances. The FDA classifies Gabapentin as an anticonvulsant that can also help with certain types of nerve pain and some mood disorders. It requires a doctor's prescription and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, mood swings and weight gain. A sudden withdrawal may also create the risk of seizures. The Gaba that you see available over the counter, however, is just a nutritional supplement. The full name for it is actually Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid. It is just an amino acid. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I think I have convinced myself that it helps me to a nice calmness in the evening! My husband takes RX for $$...

alcohol and Gabapentin

Does anyone drink beer or other alcohol while taking this? I start on it tonight, increasing every 5 days to 900 mg total a day. I'm curious as to how much alcohol can be tolerated and if there are any reasons to avoid it completely. I like my Budweiser. Thanks for any input. ## Alcohol should be avoided while using this medication, especially at such a high dosage, because it can aggravate the side effects, making them much more problematic. These can include: nausea, drowsiness, dizziness and peripheral edema. You can read more on it here: Do you have any other questions? ## what are the bad things with this drug and alcohol? ## I've taken 3600mg of Gabapentin each day for 21 months now! I drink alcohol with them & feel ok. I would just say that the Gabapentin alone will l...

Im suffering from slip disc & right knee pain. Recently Doctor has prescribed GABAPENTIN 300mg pill one per day to be taken only at night. Two hours after taking, I felt very dizzy, drowsy & nausea an it continues for the next 24 hours. Feel very sleepy and cant concentrate on my work. Should I continue or stop? Pls advice. ## Hello, Amoy! How are you? Those can be normal side effects of this medication, as reported by the U.S. FDA. You may also experience nausea, headache, dry mouth, mood swings and weight changes. They should go away, in a few weeks, once your body adjusts to the medication. If they don't, or if they get severe, then you should consult your doctor as you may need to try a different medication. Is there anything else I can help with?

I take 100 ic gabapentin 3 times/day for sciatica. Now I find that my bladder leaks about once a week which is unnerving. Has this been reported as a side effect? ## Didn't give enough information about my bladder leakage. The leakage is small and occurs in my sleep. ## Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant that has also been proven to help with certain types of nerve pain. This is not listed among the normal side effects, which may include: nausea, drowsiness, dizziness and weight gain. You can read more on it here: Have you talked to your doctor about this? ## Have not talked to doctor about occasional bladder leakage while sleeping since starting Gabapentin. I would like to know if any other persons who take this drug have had this experience. Let me kinow. Thanks ## Having the same pr...

I tried gabapentin 300mg. (instead of Lyrica 50mg.) the first time I used it, it made my heart pound so bad I could not use it, could I use a smaller mgs. of gabapentin. I have spinal stenosis, I have diabetes, my legs jumps all over, can't sleep because of it. ## Hello, Betty! How are you? I'm sorry about the problems you experienced. No, they are not the same. Lyrica contains the active ingredient Pregabalin, it is in the same class of medications, but different. Thus, it may work better for you. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, weight gain and dry mouth. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Your dose isn't high enough for neuropathy. I have taken it for 11yrs and I'm on 800mg 3 times a day. Racing heart ha...

Withdrawal from Gabapentin or Zoloft?
8 Replies RSS
I started taking Gabapentin 300mg x 3 daily on May 13,015 for severe shingles pain in my ear, mouth and face. June 16,2015 I began having memory lapses not walking straight as well as anxiety. My doctor told me to go off cold turkey. I was to be taking tylenol for the pain as it was not as severe. I also take .5 mg Lorazepam for anxiety up to 2 times per day as needed for my copd depression. I also take .25 Zoloft once daily. I had forgotten to take my Zoloft for three days last week. Now I am having nausea all day long as well as feeling like just crawling in bed. I also have hot flashes. I now do not know which one I am having WD from? Doc says if it continues make an appointment. Take tums for the nausea. They do nothing. I cannot eat until I take a Lorazepam ... as this settles the ...

Gabapentin and weight gain
4 Replies RSS
I take 600 mg. of gabapentin (3) times a day for nerve pain. For me it has been a miracle drug. I do have difficulty if not almost impossible losing weight and have even gained some. It has been worth the trade off to be able to feel better. Does anyone know how to counteract this? ## Hi Agnes, Sorry to hear about your challenges with Gabapentin. According to the National Library of Medicine, rapid weight gain happens to be a general side effect of this medication. I'm not a doctor, but coming from someone with an athletic background, the best advice I can offer for counteracting it would probably be to follow a strict diet and exercise program. Something that you can commit to as long as you're taking the medication. I would also recommend drinking plenty of water (making that ...

pre gabapentin 300mg and should I take them?

Hi, i've just been prescribed Gabapentin 300mg but was meant to get Pregabalin 300mg. Is there any difference in what they actually do and should I just start to take them or should I call Dr and ask for the Pregabalin??? ## Hello, Wayne! How are you? They are both anticonvulsants that have also been shown to help with certain types of nerve pain and some mood disorders, so they are pretty much interchangeable, but you may not be on the right dosage, since they don't exchange evenly across the board. The FDA lists the typical side effects of them as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, mood swings and weight changes. Is there anything else I can help with?

how long does it take gabapentin to get out of your system

i was taking 300 mg neurontin . 1 in am 1 at noon and 2 at bedtime. I was prescribed the med in May of 2013. Increased later when not helping with foot numbness. It has been almost 2 weeks since i tapered myself off of the drug and i still feel nausea in the am which effects my eating. Please advise how long it will take this med to be out of my system. Thank You ## Hi Cindy, Sorry to hear about the nausea you've been experiencing lately. From what I've been researching, in most cases it usually ends up being around 2 to 5 days for this type of medication to clear your system. However because you've been taking it for about a year, I'd imagine your body could still probably use some time to get accustomed to not having it on a regular basis. One study I found mentioned t...

Gabapentin/How long do these stay in the urine???
9 Replies RSS
I was given a couple 400mg gabapentins from a friend for some migraines, I took them but found out that I will be having a drug screen and am worried that these pills can be detected, so please could someone let me know whether or not I'm worrying for nothing or if I have something to worry about, thanks ## If you've given yourself at least a few days, odds are that it's less likely to show up under any sort of urine, saliva, or blood test. What's more risky in my opinion, is the opportunity for a false-positive to show up. Where as it can sometimes show that you took something completely different and then you're left trying to explain yourself. The good thing is since most standard drug screens test for illicit drugs, controlled medications, and medications with a ...

How Long Does Gabapentin Stay In Your System
73 Replies RSS
how long does gabapentin 900mg stay in your system? ## Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant that has also been shown to help with certain types of nerve pain and mood disorders and, as such, it is not a substance that is tested for on standard drug tests. However, the half-life for your body to process it out is from 5 to 7 hours and total elimination time is usually 5 to 6 half-lives, so you'd be looking at 30 to 42 hours for it to be processed out of your body entirely. Learn more Gabapentin details here. I'm taking 300 mg of gabapentin three times a day and noticed a rapid weight gain. I think it's mostly water retention and I was wondering if taking one Lasix a day would help me loose the weigh and keep it off and not cause any other catastrophe. ## Hello, Margareta! How are you? With the possible risks associated with such rapid fluid retention, it would be best to have it checked out, rather than trying to treat it yourself. It does have the potential to lead to congestive heart failure. How long have you been taking the Gabapentin? It can also just cause regular weight gain and not just fluid gain. Other side effects may include nausea, dizziness and mood swings. ## The drug made me pile on the. Weight ,,and I am only 10'12 my tummy hammed it on ,,I was frighted. To eat ...

Not to sure about that. ## Things to consider - how long have you taken the medication, what exactly do you take it for, what other medications do you take (prescriptiion & OTC). A drug's side effects may diminish or vanish completely over time. A person's age may enter into the overall picture and,as always, a second opinion never hurt. ## since taking it I have been getting a lot of colds/bronchitis duet to low energy and high white cell count. ## I have been taking it for 2 months and the effects are not getting any bett...

3000 mg of Gabapentin down to 1200 mg - AWFUL side effects?
1 Reply RSS
About 16 months ago, I was put on Gabapentin for sciatica. Eventually, I worked my way up to around 3000 mg per day and stayed at that dose for quite some time.. maybe 6 months or so. Here recently, I've slowly reduced it down to 1200 mg (600 mg in the morning and 600 mg at night) - My doctor says that Gabapentin shouldn't have any side effects. However, nothing else has changed with my medicines. Here are my side effects: SEVERE depression, feeling worthless, not wanting to do ANYTHING, including work, suicidal thoughts, uncontrollable crying, knowing something isn't right in my mind, etc) - Does this sound like the Gabapentin reduction? Again, my doctor says there would be no side effects, but I'm SERIOUSLY wondering. Everything I read online is pretty bad about this d...

Pain management telling fibs.

Just released me today from the hospital. I had rapid heartbeats, short of breath, I am 70 years old. I have a pacemaker that I am dependent on. Except for some vitamin deficiency, they could not really find what was wrong. I have been taking 5mg oxycodone 3x a day, some days, only twice, for 4 years. I was at pain management for only 2 months. Today was my third visit.. Straight from the hospital. I was in a lot of pain due to Costrochronditus this month because of the way they gave me a steroid shot in my back. (I had to lay on my chest) The first and second steroid shot didn't work either. I could not take a prendisone pill because of the steroid shot, so I had to take extra pain med. I had called my Pain management and told them that I was going to do that. So I get to the pain ...
