Focus/silliness

Updated

my 8yr. old grandson takes vyvanse, he has been on it for almost two years, sometimes he is focused and other times he isn't....................then there are the silly times which lately seems to be a lot at school.................just plain acting silly. the very odd time he has been aggressive..............then I find it goes up and down with reference to his actions...................overall, I guess it is working, there are times when he suffers from stomach pain and I know this is a side affect, I find it suppresses his appetite too along with his growth which I am not happy about. He says kids call him short at school as they are getting taller and he isn't. Just how much does this drug affect their growth.

I am 30 and just began Vyvanse. HOWEVER as a child I took Ritalin as it was the only drug on the market when I was in second grade and ADHD was just being recognized as a true medical problem. I had all the things your grandson does, reason being, the medication doesn't CURE ADHD ... Just helps our brains file away unnecessary info or our ever circulating thoughts. My silliness has never changed and I also get bouts of anger. Is he in therapy? There are ways for people like us to learn to control our urges but it's hard. Be happy, I have learned ADHD is a gift that can hide itself as a burden. We are the most life loving and creative people you will ever meet. Also, I am 5'9. ;) he will catch up!

@Jude,

Oddly enough, there are actually quite a few reports online from patients complaining about potential growth problems after taking vyvanse. While I can't say that it has this sort of effect on everyone who takes it, it does appear to be more common than you might've originally anticipated.

From what I've read, most ADHD meds are known to decrease your appetite (causing weight loss), so it could even be that the lack of growth may just be related to his diet while on the medication and not so much anything else.

However, I'd also keep in mind that at age 8 he hasn't experienced puberty yet, whereas some of the largest growth spurts in life are taking place. You may just want to have his doctor perform regular growth checks during his time on Vyvanse to keep things in order.

I hope this helps!
