NY City may be option for you. Beth Israel Methadone Clinic. Best, and oldest public meth program in US, and sanest regulations although you still jump through hoops compared to 35 years ago.There are AT Least 20 Beth Israel clinics in city at different locations. They use sliding pay scale. If you are low income, SS, SSI or no income you can pay as little as $7.00 a week for 7 doses, $28.00 for a month. But there are requirements. You must have address in NY, maybe Jersey OK too. You will need to call to double check the Jersey part and to be sure all my info is accurate. Ypu will need picture ID and at least letters addressed to you at stated address or probably ok if you only provide a letter stating you are staying with NYer friend., subletting or roomate. Otherwise will need to show a lease, or utillity bill for proof of residency. The deal is you must initially come in daily for first 3 months. If urine has been clean (except must have the methadone in it, of course) you then can request a weeks worth (six take homes, one dose taken there). After 1 year, ask for monthly take home (27 days plus one dose that is taken there) Must provide reason for that request such as: you are musician on tour, work in other state, need to baby sit relatives child, whatever.... Must come in as addict initially but pain meds reason for addiction ok.This is a Methadone Maintenance Program. Also check NYC pain clinic requirements as may be more suited to your particular needs. This I don't know much about. In NYC can get Medicaid if can't afford medical expenses unlike say, VA where very narrow who gets Medicaid. Private Meth programs excellent option if you can afford them ($100-150 a week approx), They involve less mandatory BS and work with you. IN NYC can get dose of over 300 mg. daily if you need it but usually not at first. 80-120 is about average once in treatment. Some people want only 2mg though and they will do that too. Drug puritanism/War on Drugs has screwed us all. Seems one has few options for normal life. It's political, about profits for mega drug corps., lobbies that hugely financed entire GOP re-election for seats in Congress going back to Bush administration circa 2003 and legislative pay backs. Now only the rich can afford decent health & RX care Please vote. Obama is the only way to go although he is not perfect. I have really looked into this and under the GOP's and Romney, things for us here will get way, way worse. I have been on Methadone for 39 years and have lived through the ups and downs of political policy trends regarding this; how Party politics effects us and Methadone related legislation US wide under both parties.This is to say, I know from what I speak. Sorry for my rant but for many of us this is not Decision 2012 = "Rah!, Rah! I want my team to win" but life and death.

Unfortunately, no one can really know ahead of time what a doctor is or is not willing to prescribe, as that is based on the doctor's discretion and not on someone else's previous appointment (especially since many doctor's are now worried about losing their licensing for prescribing too many narcotics).

Some advice I can give you is to not specifically ask for any 'specific medication' when you see a new doctor. Just make sure to transfer or take a copy of all your medical records with you. Then, the best approach in my opinion, is to discuss up front and honestly what has or hasn't worked for you in the past. Most doctors will take it under consideration and hear you out if you approach them in this manner. I believe a lot of patients don't get the medication they need because they are approaching the doctor in such a needy way that they are being viewed as addicts or junkies and not patients. So as awkward as that may seem, it is something to consider and be made aware of, because sadly enough, that is how many rudementary doctors tend to think.

In regards to finding a local pain doctor, I have listed below a couple websites specific to locating pain management doctors in a given area. All you have to do is input your city or zip code for narrowed results:
{link removed because site no longer exists}

You can give this other page a try too if you come up with different results for some reason or another:
wellness.com/find/pain%20management%20specialist

Many of the results you find (in one or both of the links above) also list a phone number for that specific doctor; I'd consider calling up a number of them to see if they are accepting new patients; some aren't, but most usually are.

I hope this info helps and wish you all good luck on finding the right doctors!

I TOTALLY DISAGREE about asking a pain management doctor for a specific medication. I've been on Methadone for chronic pain since 2005. Granted some dr's just DON'T prescribe Methadone. But if one goes into a NEW pain management clinic because they've moved or the pain clinic is no longer there - all one has to do is tell them where they went, for how long and what they were prescribed and if the dr has doubts they can verify it. I think what you said applies if you just make an appointment w/a new doctor and go in and ask for Methadone. If a person NEEDS Methadone because they were on it before this does in NO WAY make them NEEDY or an addict. I was prescribed Methadone by a pain clinic in Phoenix in 2005 and went to the clinic for 3 yrs. I came back to PA unexpectedly, started to go into withdrawal and had to be hospitalized. The staff there sent me to a Clinic, not a Methadone clinic. The dr only took patients w/o insurance of any kind. She prescribed Methadone for me. Once I got state benefits, I went to my prior family dr in PA to see if he could recommend a pain clinic where I could be prescribed Methadone. Much to my surprised he said he would do it. That's highly unusual. I had to go back to AZ (8/2010) to get my car and my things in storage and he even agreed to send my Methadone prescriptions by mail as I thought I was only going to be there a couple months. When I hadn't come back by Jan/2011, he stopped sending them w/no warning and I went through the absolutely worst medical experience I've ever been through. Methadone withdrawal is 21 days. It didn't hit me for a few days because Methadone has half lives. Once I was in the thick of it I couldn't stay standing, couldn't stay sitting, couldn't stay laying down, I couldn't eat, couldn't sleep was nauseous 24/7 and found out after the fact that I had blackouts as I made phone calls I have no recollection of making. It was like I was full of drugs when there were no drugs in my system. The ER wouldn't even give me anything for anxiety. I knew they wouldn't prescribe Methadone, but nothing for anxiety was downright cruel. I forget how long I was into it when I felt like I wanted to die rather than to go through that any longer. i wasn't suicidal, I just felt like I wanted to die. The ER took it as being suicidal. They kept me in there all day looking for a place to send me that would prescribe Methadone. After 8 hours I was told a hospital van was going to transport me to a place that would prescribe Methadone. It was 45 minutes away and I literally counted the minutes. When I got there I was told I was in a detox. I was livid. The psychiatrist in charge of the clinic was absolutely wonderful. I saw him the following morning and he giggled in a kind way and said 'Well you sure aren't in the right place are you?' He wasn't accusing me of being an addict or anything close. He wasn't a doctor who prescribed Methadone, but he prescribed me a week's worth of Percocet 10/325 to get me out of the withdrawal. After that it took me until June of that year to find another pain clinic in Phoenix. The one I had gone to previously had closed it's doors. There was an Urgent Care in Sedona and one of the doctors there prescribed Methadone twice for me during the 4 month period and I nursed them so I wouldn't run out. I went to one pain clinic and they didn't prescribe Methadone - only Morphine and that made my pain worse. But the doctor didn't see me as 'needy' or a 'drug addict' - they just didn't prescribe Methadone. Finally I found another pain clinic and asked to be prescribed Methadone. He agreed, but lowered my dosage which turned out to be okay. He didn't see me as needy or a drug addict either. He also verified that Morphine can make some peoples' pain worse so I felt very validated. It infuriates me to see people write something like you did because it's false information and can very well prevent a person from getting the narcotic pain medication they need. i don't know whether this happened to you or you made it up - but either way - stop and think before writing something like that!!

How did that Obama thing turnout for you? Not well, of course. He has been worse on drugs, war, and civil liberties than Bush, which is really saying something -- amplified by the fact that it's the ACLU saying that.

I'm gonna be treated like crap and I can't do anything about it,I have gas receipts hotel bills I have it all to show I was 5 hours from home with my aunt and daughter.ive never been talked to so nasty by someone in my life to the point I wanna fire my pain doctor over her staff member who called me,she sayed sorry about my luck if I wasn't there by 2 and it was 12:15.I shouldn't be talked to like this.i have been on my pain medicine for 14 yrs. methadone is all I take,I use to take Xanax,Loretab and methadone I went off everything but the methadone. My 22y.o. daughter, who is on 120mg. per day of Methadone, has been told by her Internist that because of her Gastroparesis, she should not take the liquid liquid form, but should be taking pills instead. She immediately vomits up her liquid dosage as is in withdrawal. She also suffers from chronic migraines, and is having a diffult time keeping her diabeties under control. She is really too ill to go to a program; and one program has discharged her as a medical risk. She's phoned many programs and none will deliver the methadone in pill for. She cannot take Suboxine as she also vomits that up.

My daughter lives in Baltimore MD. I'm thinking that a pain Specialist might be more appropriate at this time.

In Pa there are doctors offices that will treat "pain management" with focus on illicit substance abuse being part of that pain that are compassionate and caring. It is surprising to me that there is such a lack of compassion on so many doctors parts and on our state lawmakers when it comes to treating opioid addiction. The current answer of a methadone program is the worse answer for many people. Once there, they are introduced to so many new illicit medications that they come on with one addiction and after 6 months have three or more. Not to mention that most have to leave their jobs because of the inconvenient hours of the methadone clinic or that they have to come every day for their medication, rain or shine including major holidays. Vacations become difficult and the expression liquid handcuffs comes to mind. I have been there too. What will it take for people to wake up and start making this a political issue. Doctors should have the right to prescribe what they believe is in the patients best interest and not be saddled by ignorant concepts from the 1960's. Of course this issue is not being helped by the moron doctors who over-prescribe opiates or simply sell prescriptions out of their offices for cash. Would people come to a drs office that would help on the short term for this issue?
