Fake Ms Contin

Updated

I am currently prescribed MS Contin for pain and while effective I sometimes feel like some of the pills are fake. I get no relief and feel withdrawal symptoms even. I have looked at them under a magnifer but they all look the same. Is it possible that someone at my pharmacy is switching some of my pills for pacebos? If so, how do I deal with it?

I am experiencing the same problem. Generic MS Contin ER, 60mg tablets. I have been taking these for 11 years, but for the past week and a half my pain level became extremely high. Couldn't sleep, couldn't keep still. Unbelievable pain. I decided to stop taking them and started taking some 30mg pills I had. Pain is starting to subside after 2 days. How can I have the 60mg pills examined to see if they are counterfeit? BTW, these were filled at my regular retail pharmacy - been using them for over 20 years.

@AJ,

The idea of someone switching out your pills at the pharmacy isn't far fetched at all in my opinion. Things like that do happen and you could report suspicious activity to a store manager. However, my first thoughts have me wondering if maybe it's just your tolerance that's too high and that's why they don't consistently work well? Do you take them at the same time everyday? How long have you been taking them for? Another thought is to try filling your prescription at another pharmacy location to see if those same pills work differently over the duration of your script. I hope this helps!

@JM,

I would encourage you to check with a local pharmacy to see if they can run a lab analysis there for you or perhaps even recommend a company who performs drug panels, since they probably have the resources to do a deeper examination on the pill.

It is strange that two people have reported the same type of problem, so it would be interesting to see if there's something more to this...

I have had the same problem I take 30 mg per day but have had to take 2 more often on the last generic large round orangy colored. I used to get a small round dark orange/red color that worked great. The new ones say manufacturer myl

I also have been having the same issue and this is what I have found out so far. I have been taking a variety of pain med's for several years for many different and several reasons. From reading posts and threads, the problem seems to boil down to the manufacturer. Nearly one to three months out of the year, I will pick up a prescription of MS Contin ER 30 mg generics that are very weak in strength, will not last but 6-8 hours at the most, I use 2 of these to get a fair night's sleep which is typically 5-7 hours. During the day I use Oxycodone 30 mg 4 times a day. For the past 3 months the MS have been weak and I finally noticed that the Dark Red coating looked like it had been washed-out and not nearly as thick. After thinking they had been soaked and dried, I ruled that out since it would be hard to maintain the shape. The problem, the manufacturer is by Rhodes, a Purde company. After reading other posts on threads, Rhodes products are weak across the board and there are other companies too. The pharmacy makes the choice on the cheapest buying cost, I assume, to make the most of their profits. One thing I have done for years is to keep all my medical receipts and transcripts, something I strongly encourage especially if changing doctors, legal suits, SSI/SSDI... So I reviewed my printout from the pharmacy for the past years prescriptions (Something else I suggest everyone do yearly) and looked at the name of the company providing the med's. Sure enough, there was a change from Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals. As hard as it is to find a good doctor, as difficult it is to live some semblance of a fair quality of life, as restrictive the pain contracts pain doctors make it to stick to one pharmacy, now the government thinks we are all nothing but no good drug addicts that should die than burden society... the FDA says they check for consistency, but they don't. The last thing people trying to get by with chronic pain is to deal with bad med's that don't work.

I wish there were a way to post an attachment to show the obvious color difference. What I will be doing is to call my doctor and let them know that I will be calling around to pharmacies to find one that consistently carries Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals for my MS Contin ER/MS SULF ER 30mg. I hope this helps.
