Fentanyl Patch (Page 5)

Updated

CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW TO KEEP THE PATCH FROM COMING OFF AFTER SECOND DAY ? I SHOWER A COUPLE TIMES A DAY AND ON THE SECOND DAY THE PATCH WON'T STAY ON.THEN YOU USE MORE THAN WHAT IS PERSCRIBED AND YOU RUN OUT OF PATCHES AND THE INSURANCE COMPANY WON'T PAY FOR ANY MORE THAN PERSCRIBED, THEN COMES WITHDRAWAL?

Ask you pharmacy to give you a different manufacturer (brand). I changed and have no problem.

It says right on the instructions not to cover with tape.

When the old type I used came off the pharmacy replaced them free for me.

Mystical.......you are right. If your prescription is for stronger like mine you wear more than one patch.

YES! Nexcare made by 3M prevents the patches from falling off! I use the 2-3/8 X 2-3/4 inches. The secondary name for these is Tegaderm. You can get them at just about any drugs store. They are EXPENSIVE but a lot cheaper than the patches.

Hint: Get your first box from a local source and then get them via the web. I save a bunch of money by doing that. Also make very certain that you are putting the non-sticky side of the patch on the dressings, else you've just shot a patch.

Go get 'em!

To the person who said that it is illegal...I was referring to the Nexcare product NOT Fentanyl. Fentanyl is a controlled substance, as I'm sure you know, and requires a paper prescription presented IN PERSON at a licensed pharmacy. However, there isn't a prescription required for the Nexcare dressings.

They are clear and breath, however, they do not permit water to go through them. I've been getting them over the Internet for four years--it is perfectly legal.

Ben ...who are you responding to?

We need to say who we are responding to. It is hard to follow a conversation when we do not know who is in on it.

I used to use surgical tape and tape all four sides. However, as soon as it is no longer secure, I would start going through withdrawal symptoms. Too many ups and downs for me. I asked my Pain Mgmt MD to change me to something else. Problems solved.

you have to order a big patch from the company for it to stay on. it's a b**** but it works no problem. I believe that they are free but don't hold that to be true.

reply to patty. you stated that you had to many problems with withdrawl on the patches. I just increased from 25mcg to 50 and I was worried about going up in strength for that very reason, withdrawl issues. If the pharmacy cannot get the patches in on time, there has been glitches before, etc. I have not experienced any withdrawl yet if patch comes off early on anything but was concerned about moving up on my dose that could happen. Just wondering what you switched to, still a patch type delivery or oral method? Thanks!

I was put on Kadian, brand not generic, 40mg 1x daily. The generic put me into withdrawal. I got very sick right away. I have been taking the Kadian , not generic, now for about 3 years. I have not had any problems. But I have to take it at the same time everyday or I start to get sick.

Kadian is a morphine sulphate. But not all morphine sulfates are the same.

Why no tape?

Tape them on or ask your pain mgmt dr to try something else. Sometimes some skin type just won't allow the patches to stick. But first, Make sure the area is clean, dry complete then apply patch then the surgical paper tape.

You are not suppose to cover the patches with anything, tape included, it messes with the delivery of the medication. My instructions say you can use some tape on the outside edges of your patch, but I only did this once, it was a pain and did not work. The tegraderm is by far the best out there for insuring your patches will stick the full 72hrs.

My pain Management doctor switched me to Kadian which is brand name of morphine sulphate. It is a slow release capsule. I have had no problems with the Kadian.

Hi,
I have been on them for ten years so am a bit of an expert ! Try shaving the part of the arm you are going to stick them on. Even if you cannot see hair it is still there. Make sure the skin is very dry and when you apply hold patch on for about ten seconds , Good luck and hope that works for you x
