I WAS PRESCRIBED THE 50 MCG/HR FENTANYL PATCH FOR CHRONIC BACK PAIN & DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE. I WAS GIVEN THE PRESCRIPTION SEVERAL WEEKS AGO. I JUST GOT IT FILLED 2 DAYS AGO BECAUSE I'M AFRIAD TO USE IT. I HAVE READ ALL THE PATIENT INFO, RESEARCHED IT ON THE NET & TALKED TO SEVERAL PHARMACISTS AS WELL AS MY PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN. ALL OF THE PHYSICIANS & PHARMACISTS TELL ME THAT THE PATCH WILL HELP ME WITH THE DAILY PAIN. THEY SAY THAT THE PATCH SHOULD NOT CAUSE ME ANY HARM BUT THE ONE TING THAT'S STOPPING ME FROM USING IT IS THE RESPIRATORY SIDE EFFECTS & POSSIBLE OVERDOSE. I'M SEEKING SOME ADVISE FROM PEOPLE THAT HAVE USED THIS DRUG BEFORE WHETHER IT WAS A GOOD OR BAD OUTCOME. I AM OPOID TOLERANT BECAUSE I'VE BEEN DEALING WITH THIS PAIN FOR THE LAST 5-6 YEARS. WHEN I HAVE A BREAKTHROUGH OF PAIN & HAVE TO SEEK EMERGENCY TREATMENT OTHER PAIN MEDS GIVEN (IV OR IM) DON'T WORK ANYMORE. ER'S HAVE GIVEN ME MORPHINE & IT DOESN'T EVEN TAKE THE EDGE OFF THE PAIN. DILAUDID DOESN'T WORK UNLESS I'M GIVEN MORE THAN 3MG'S & THAT WEARS OFF AFTER ABOUT AN HOUR IF IT LASTS THAT LONG. WHEN I'M IN SEVERE PAIN MY PRESSURE RISES. I'M AFRAID OF THE PATCH B/C I DON'T WANT TO FAINT OR PASS OUT FROM A DROP IN MY PRESSURE. I'M CURRENTLY TAKING VICODIN 7.5/500 EVERY 4 HOURS. I HAVE NOW BUILT A TOLERANCE FOR THE VICODIN AND IT HAS BEEN CHANGED TO PERCOCET 5/325 & SOMETIMES I CAN TAKE UP TO 3 OF THEM EVERY 4 HOURS. I'M ALSO ON OTHER MEDS THAT I BELIEVE WILL INTERACT WITH THE FENTANYL. I TAKE LEXAPRO, ATIVAN, CLONIDINE DAILY. I NEED SERIOUS HELP!!!

how is she acting with the meds? I would go by how she feels, talks co herently right?
I am on 50mg for severe chronic pain, and have been on the same dosage for about 6 years. Seems that's a lot but i would go by how she feels. Quality of life is what I aim for with pain and constant pain is HARD!!
I also send prayers for your mother.

Im so sorry you have so much pain. I have had CP for 8 years in August .I was hit in y car by a truck and my whole life fell apart. I lost my career, my home, and my dignity along with ability to work or function. I cried daily and was so depressed, I fantasized about dying. I put all of my faith in God and he has given me hope and purpose.
I am a little better. I still am on Fentanyl 50mg and Oxycodine for breakthrough pain. I also take Lexapro (depression) and flexeral (PRN).
I know first hand how surreal and hopeless this can be.
What helps me: I rest throughout the day.
I dont overload my activities
Try to sleep well wit aids of course
Support from anyone you can get that from. Not my family in my case.
And see your dr when you feel it's worse or changing. If your meds are not working then tell your dr and he or she will adjust I hope.

I stil have a lot of pain with meds I find nothing takes our pain but takes the edge off. My dr told me "Nothing takes pain all the way away" he was right.

Can anyone tell me if u have tried the fentanal patch vs methodone which has fewer side effects, & can anyone tell me if u hsve these effects from fentanal i have more trouble sleeping with fen,also i wake n middle of night if i take sleep aid,soaking from sweat.not menapausal over that,just started when started patch.took morph,didnt help pain,couldnt sleep.on lowest dose of fen, just started it. cant say if helping pain yet.any feedback PLEASE.I SEE DR SOON NEED TO KNOW ANSWERES.THANKS.

Hello. Yes I have the same side effects. The patch works real well for my pain other then the sweating I dont have any other side effects.

you simply would be wearing 250MCG of Fentanyl and be out of your months worth of meds.

I've voiced my concerns but most of you seem to know each other.I'm on my last 25mg fentanyl patch then I'll get zero medicine.with CHF N-said are out, Lyrica tightens the throat, gabba based drugs,can't breathe, Cymbalta literally almost killed me, Tylenol, a nurse overdosed me cause the Dr sent me to Neurology for fiorinal then refused to allow me to use it. my choices die a slow painful death or convince a cop to kill me. Any suggestions?

I have used vicodin for back pain then switched to norco. After5 years. Put on 25mcg. Fentynl patch didn't work only for withdrawl. Now 50 mcg.patches for 6months. It works it takes about 6 hes. to start to feel relief. The 2nd day is pain free the the third day wears off. That's why they prescribe norco for break through pain. I didn't.have any side effects from patch. I was curious. & wanted to try suboxen. I was given 2mg &told try every 45min. up to 8mg. It did take 8mg. It did take pain away & withdrawal. I thought ok its going to take 8mg all the time. (I left out about 4-5 hrs. later I had did the same thing because my pain came back 2mg x 8. You can take another. 2mg.if you feel pain/anxiety. So the next morning. I only had to take up to 4-6 & 5 hrs later the same thing.The next morning. 2-4 worked. The next day I honestly did not have much pain or withdrawal. I just stopped taking & used alieve for pain. This is the 2nd week & of course who doesn't want to feel pain free by taking more norco or whatever takes 100% away & feel good. I know I should have gone back to Drs visit. & get more prescription for suboxen so when I feel the anxiety /pain I have the 2mg to take. I know many people have extreme pain & take what works. Fentenyl patches were the best I guess side effect its hard to wake up & constpaition.But the best sleep after the 1st day. For those of you who want to get off. I would try talking closely to a suboxen Dr. the reason. why I stopped fast is I heard that if taken to long it also has addiction. It blocks the pain resecptors that it does not give that high feeling but only takes withdrawal. & pain away. Just giving my opinion. Maybe for the people that are taking too much opioiods & need a break. The fourth day I felt normal & actually in a better mood.

I can't take the medicine that is being offered in spite of my having been established treatment plan for over 15-19 years. I'm a veteran and seemingly every veteran is having any pain meds with opiates taken away. staff who are on the same meds can obtain theirs but outpatients are either flat having it discontinued or diagnosis redefined to force a change from what works to the drug of choice for this pain clinic. my Dr 16+ years ago tried everything possible before she/orthopedic PA decided on drug regime. Along comes new physician and his EGO won't talk with the patient, he just makes the decision to discontinue treatment. veterans are getting shafted and nothing is being done to rectify the problem. I begged my PC for something because the pain is causing me to vomit,and I can hardly walk.This didn't happen when the pain was controlled.

It's not about drugs as everyone seems to think,I'm losing my life as I've known it,I live alone,it's all I can do to do base things much less take real care of my life.my life is dying in my eyes and no one will listen.THE drugs Lyrica,Cymbalta I can't take due to adverse reactions,it's on my record,being ignored.so Tylenol is out as I previously mentioned so combo medicine I can't take...that's why I was put on the medicine. To NOW refuse anything for pain relief is insane.

I've been on fentanyl patches and breakthrough medicine for 19+ years.now once again (4yrs ago) the physicians redefined my established diagnoses in order to take me off the medicine that worked.Has anyone else hurt so bad that you would rather go to sleep and not be because no one will listen .I'm not suicidal I'm in pain,pain greater than my resolve can deal with.why live in pain that destroys and devastates quality of life from 98% down to maybe 3%.NOW I can barely walk and doing simple things hurt so much I don't know what to do.
Please if anyone else has ever felt this way,what made it better?
Because I can't take their prescribed drugs they ignore the issues.
Pain changes how we see,relate, and function.

I have done every opiate, every strength. I was taking 6 roxys 30 a day and now am on 75 dent plus 2 30 mg roxy for breakthrough. It's the perfect combo for pain, plus I take 4 mg of klonopin for anxiety. Any questions I'm confident I can help

I take 1mg 3x's Xanax daily and was prescribed 50mcg/hr tr patch. So your saying I can not take my Xanax? Is this your side effect or does it apply to everyone? My doctor knows I take Xanax so why would he prescribe this to me if everyone may have the same effects as you? I don't understand how you can speak for everyone when everyones body is different.

You can take your xanax while on Fentanyl. My DR. has me on 2mg xanax bars 3 times a day and I take the 100mcg Fentanyl patch and 30mg Oxycodone pills for breakthrough. You have no worries in taking it. BTW, I have taken this amount for 6 years with no problems. Hope this helps ease your worries.

You have to be very careful taking fentynal with any Seratonin inhibitor or otherwise know as anti depressant. My paperwork that comes with Fent patch tells you about it very clearly a no no.

Lydia......re: fentanyl and benzo's......(klonopin, Ativan, Xanax, etc). I am sorry you had that kind of reaction. Many people are on fentanyl and benzo's, both, at the same time and do not have the kind of reaction you did. ( I'm a nurse who has had many patients on these meds). I am glad you shared your experience but it is not a given that if you take one of those meds then do not take the other....ie: klonopin and fentanyl. Yes, they are both CNS depressants and mixing them can increase respiratory problems, including respiratory failure. Dosages of these meds is what matters the most, not the combo of the meds. Please, share your experience but also include, " this is what happened to me and I just want people to be aware and be careful." Otherwise many people who need those meds that can really change their lives for the better may become so scared that they would not try the meds. I'm not coming down on you.....just adding some facts. Thank you for sharing!

PS......@ Lydia......fentanyl and benzo's combined......a psychotic episode is NOT even a listed adverse reaction. In fact, giving a benzo, IV, along with fentanyl has been proven beneficial in regards to muscle rigidity/spasms. Like I said before, the main concern with these meds in combo is CNS depression.....low resp rate and even resp failure yet each type of these meds can cause these all on their own. One just needs to be monitored closely when taking a benzo with a narcotic.....ANY narcotic.

@ Creole Chick.......I know this is an old post but, in case you still read it or anyone else does, you DO NOT have to stick with vicoprofen ( hydrocodone + ibuprofen). Percocet, which is Oxycodone + acetaminophen, which is toxic to the liver and contraindicated in your case as you know, comes in a pure oxycodone formula. No acetaminophen, no ibuprofen, etc.....just plain old fast acting oxycodone. Hydrocodone, IMO due to education & experience, is NOT a very good long term med for chronic pain. In fact, most people claim it stops helping much in a relatively short period of time......1-5 years. I know "years" sounds like a long time but, as you know, with chronic pain it is not a long time. However, the pain makes every minute of every day feel like an hour! I hope you found a combo, BY NOW, that helps you. Same to the rest of you here. Signed, a chronic pain patient and nurse.
