Extreme Salty Taste In Mouth For 20 Days! (Page 4)

Updated

I'm a 51 yr. old female who woke up on April 7, 2011, with an extremely salty taste in my mouth. When I tried to drink water to wash it out, it was like drinking salt gargle water. Nothing I eat or drink makes it go away. I can't stand to put anything in my mouth that is salty because the salt taste already in my mouth makes it almost unswallowable. Prior to that day, I have only 2 regular medications that I take daily: Lisinopril 40 mg( increased from 20 mg in mid November) for high BPas well as HCTZ 25 mg(been taking Lisinopril for 8 years) and 1mg of ropinorole(generic for Requip) for RLS (taking for almost 6 years). I also take black cohosh twice a day for hot flashes and night sweats(last menstrual cycle was Sept. 2010). On March 18, I started taking a 10 day prescription for NOHIST for a sinus inflammation, as well as FLONASE and a cough medicine. I had taken both the Flonase and cough medicine years previously, but had never had the NOHIST before. I finished the NOHIST and had no other symptoms. I had also been following a nutrition plan since mid- February losing 2-3 lbs. per week, eating lots of protein, and walking 2 miles 3-4 times a week on a treadmill at the gym. I was feeling good and my energy levels were good. I had been drinking 5-6 glasses of water daily and then after the salty taste, I could hardly drink one glass. I ended up with a UTI because of the lack of fluids that I wasn't able to drink, and then had to take Cipro for 3 days and drink (salty) cranberry juice. Yuck! I also had lab work done and it showed a positive on the A & A and also a positive on the IGG. With those results, I was referred to a rheumatologist (which could take months to get in to see) and my primary care doctor changed by BP med to Triamatrene 75 mg and HTCZ 50 mg. Its been 5 days on the new BP med with no change yet. My willpower to make myself drink and eat is slowly eroding. I know that if I don't keep drinking that I could end up seriously dehydrated and in the hospital, with who knows what other problems. My doctor doesn't want to see me for 6 weeks and I still don't know when I will get an appt. with the rheumatologist!!! I have searched everything I can think of on the internet, without any hope of what it could be. I am a teacher and mother of three daughters who need me to stay out of the hospital! I hope that you can come up with a possible cause or direction that will find answers and soon! So I challenge you to find an answer, and in the meantime, drink a glass of water with about 5 TBS. of salt in it and drink it, at least 3 times a day and also swish it around in your mouth continuously and then swallow it!!!! The only time you won't taste it is when you go to sleep. And its the first thing that you consciously are aware of the instant that you wake up! Then think about having to do this for at least the next 20 days and then maybe you will have an idea of how I am feeling!!!!! Desperate!!!!!!!!!

Ask God for the healing...and believe in His power to help you as this woman did. He will help, as Jesus healed me. No doubt in His glory. When you are well, do His work in return : )

I have hada bad salty taste in my mouth for about 6 months now. I cannot taste sweet things .a slice of yellow or white cake tastes as it was made with salt instead of sugar. Everything sweet tastes nothing like it should. I have been taking mirapex, celexa and simvaststatin for a few years, and never had the salty taste. I drink 16ozs, diet ice tea everyday. Also, a cup of coffee in the morning. I drink 8 Ozs. Of water at bedtime plus water through out the day. I saw an ear, nose &throat dr.who couldn't help with my problem. He prescribed Hugh amts. of zinc to be taken for 3 months, but that didn't work. I forgot the amount of zinc, but it was way over the top.

This salty mouth thing is really getting old and I have only had it for a week or two. I have just one question of those who have replied...do all of you have hypertension?
I've been on Lisinopril for over two years now and have just been advised by my GP to increase the dosage to 40 mg daily....since this started I have reservations about continuing with this med....lemme know what you think.

I have been experiencing this salty taste also and i am not debydrated, i drink water. I dont take no potassium but my dr. Wants me to get a ct because my lymph blood work is elevated. I may have an infection of the salivary glands????because otherwise i feel well as can be except for my everyday pain. I am on 10mg methadone tabs a day for the last few years and this is fairly new. About a few months at least. Will find out this week hopefully

I think I figured out my problem with the salty (metallic) taste in my mouth. I take warfarin for hypertension and have had no problems for years. I started taking generic omeprazole and the symptom appeared immediately. I previously had the same metallic taste in my mouth when taking a course of omeprazole but didn't make the connection.

Kay.. i dont see where you answered what the cause of your issue was? I have the same problem and although i force myself to drink plenty of water, i certainly dont enjoy it. I am uncomfortable all day with the constant taste of salt and my partner doesnt seem to understand and its causing problems in our relationship. My doctor and dentist couldlt find anything wrong .. but wondering if i should go back? Its been two weeks now and it seems to be worse than ever. I have a few t rips coming up that i was looking forward to but now am worried this 'situation' will ruin both vacations.................

You might try seeing a Rheumatologist to see if it is a problem with your salivary
glands, A five minute biopsy with a surgeon can tell if there is a problem. The biopsy is done in front loser lip, painless. A dry salty mouth is classic for Sjogrens an autoimmune disease. The National Association has web sites with more information.

I am a 63 year old me and I'm having a salty taste in my mouth. This is been going on for several months. My doctor is not concerned about it. I am on a lot of meds. After discussing it with the doctor he says don't worry about it. Is this something that happens when you get older? Should I even be concerned about it?

I have just been told by my Dr that due to the pencillin i was on for strep throat, that the pills destroyed some of the good bacteria and this is why i had , at first, a metallic taste, and now a salty taste. I am now taking a compounded oral wash that is supposed to work. ( day 5 and its hasnt worked yet) . I was also advised to eat alot of regular plain yogurt as it helps put back good bacteria into your body.. Its taste horrible .. ( salty of course) but i am forcing myself to do it. I am so frustrated.. i love my red wine ( its the only alchohol i drink) and now i cant enjoy it anymore .. The salt taste is too strong and it ruins everything i drink and most of what i eat..

Nothing has worked as yet.. i have finished the mouth (oral compound) wash and it didnt work. Now, they are saying it could be a zinc deficiency and am now taking 5 Zinc losenges as day . I have only taken 3 so far and of course, nothing yet. I have tried eating raw lemons, drinking milk , eating my yogurt ... i still drink 5 -6 glasses of water every day so i know i am NOT dehydrated.. I wake up in the morning praying its gone but within seconds, i know its still there! People who dont have this dont understand how awful it is to have this taste constantly .. every minute of every day. I am very healthly otherwise and feel great .. except for this ... its really ruining the enjoyment of life ! Please.. anybody have any other ideas??????????????????

I do understand. I have had extreme salt taste everyday for three and half years.
I do not have a solution, but do have an answer why. However, it is not very
encouraging. I even talked to a dentist in Canada that works with Phantom taste, and she did not have a solution. keep in touch if it resolves or you find an answer.

Cindi, do you know if they tested for ANA levels, if this is elevated it indicates an
autoimmune disorder. I am hoping for the very best for you! Let us hear

Just done the normal 'Google' thing and found you guys with the 'salty taste' too.

It's very early days for me, only the last few days have I noticed a taste, it was only tonight while driving I realised it was a salty taste.

Off to dentist Friday so will quiz him and see what he says, however, reading through all your posts, there don't seem to be much of a cure or even a reason for the taste in the first place.

Morning Folks.. I am happy to report that after 3 weeks, the salt taste has almost disappeared. My blood tests came back ok ( except they found out that I have too much iron in my blood - but that is unrelated to the salt taste).. we do believe now it may have been a result of the anti botics I was taking for strep throat. But I did everything from changing my toothbrush, toothpaste to gargling 2 x a day with mouthwash.. using the Zinc tablets and drinking a lot of water. I even tried putting hot sauce on my tongue as I was sooooo desperate. My chiropractic had me taking a pro botic pill which is good for putting good bacteria back into the body.. So .. maybe it was a combination of everything . I don't know.. but last night I shared a bottle of wine with my daughter.. and it actually tasted like wine.. I almost cried I was so happy... its not completely gone and I see a E.N.T dr in two weeks just to make sure there is nothing else going on.. but I do see the light at the end of the tunnel... I will still check in to see how you are all getting along... Good luck to you all

Penny if you do have Sjogrens there are medications that help. The only way for sure to know if the problem is sjogrens is to have a small biopsy inside your lip..
Sjogrens is where your lymphocyte cells attack your endocrine system, like saliva
glands which give you extreme dry mouth and in my case my brain interprets it to
be salt. The medications have not helped me but they do help many people.
The best person to see is a rheumatologist. Best of luck, let us hear from you.
