Expired Topamax

I have a bottle of 25MG Topamax that I take 3 pills (75MG) at bedtime for extreme headaches that make my skull bulge where the pain is. I noticed that the pills expired 3/22/2011 but I no longer have medical insurance. Are they still ok to take?

Topamax isn't a medication that gets dangerous, per se, after the expiration date. But it does start to lose effectiveness, so it will not work as well as it did, when it was new.

The effectiveness will also be affected by how it was stored. For instance, if it was stored in a dark, relatively cool, dry place, then it will degrade much slower than if it was store in a brightly lit, warm, damp area.

I know it isn't always financially possible, or practical, but as soon as you can, the best thing you can do would be to see your doctor for a new prescription, because it is available as a generic, so it will be cheaper.

And these ones should just be properly disposed of.

My concern though is, what do you mean by skull bulge?

Because that is not normal for a headache and if your skull is actually bulging and getting misshapen, then you need to seek medical attention immediately.

By skull bulge, I mean where the pain is in my head, that part of the skull pushes outwards into a lump of some sort. I seen the neurologist 2 years ago and he did tests and prescribed me Tramadol!! To me those are basically plecebos as they are not effective for anything I have had then prescribed for. I went back to see the same (only neurologist) in my town and he then prescribed me the Topamax which really prevents my headaches or lightens them faster than excederine or any other otc headache medication. Do you think I have been misdiagnosed?
