Elevated Calcium

Updated

Approximately 5 years ago, my PCP brought up that my calcium levels were increasing. Four yrs. ago, he referred me to an Endocrinology group. Levels have been in question, and this year Test for Calcium, Ionized, Serum resulted in 5.9 and the acceptable range is 4.8-5.6. I also had the Calcium 24 Hr. Urine done. Result was 304, the 24 hr. urine (calcium was 4000 and 24 hr urine volume was 4000. Reference range was 100-300 and flag for this was High. Lastly test for U24 CRR resulted in 1812 and reference range is 600-1800, flag was High. My Bone Density had decreased, and I have been on Fosamax. The Dr. wanted to change me to Prolia. Does Magnesium play a large part with the absorption of calcium to your bones? The dr. says, my calcium is spilling into my Urine and not bones. My Mother had this same issue and had Parathyroid surgery. Following surgery, her results were normal from age 70 - 86 when she passed away from C-Diff. I am interested to know if anyone can give me some insight into this condition. My pharmacist has advised me not to take Fosamax and certainly not Prolia. Until I can provide him with all my blood results done, he has suggested I take ONE Bio Citrate Strontium daily and Calcium-Magnesium, 2 a.m. and 2 p.m. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you.

In regards to your question about whether or not Magnesium plays a large part with the absorption of calcium to your bones, I feel that the information contained in the link below may be able to answer your question more in-depth:

Although I'm not too familiar with this condition, I do believe that the foods we eat and how we digest these foods have a lot to do with it. Generally, without enough magnesium, calcium doesn't even get absorbed into your bones and more than likely will end up in your urine. Also, both sugar and alcohol increase magnesium excretion through the urine, which may also significantly effect calcium levels. In that sense, working with a dietician could prove to be very helpful.

I also agree that it was a good idea to suggest supplementing calcium + magnesium to help level things out, but from my own experience, you might find that simply eating a diet comprised of more fruits and leafy greens will have a greater impact than you realize.

Sorry that I couldn't provide you with more information on this topic, but I hope this little bit helps!

While carrying out C T Scan of heart (i.e. tomography), my total calcium score was recorded above 900 & the test could not be completed since it was above 800. What is this & what should I do to confirm what problems I have? Is it serious to have a calcium score so high?
