Donnatal Ripoff

Updated

I have been a pharmacist for 45 years and remember when this medication retailed for twenty dollars for 100 tablets, now one thousand dollars. Something is really wrong here. There's no reason for such an over price for this medicine. Seems like collusion between the FDA and big pharma to ripoff the patient. Don't trust either one. Just another example of greedy pharma.

A new company has bought out the original mfg. This company thinks it can rip people off by charging ten dollars a pill. Don't let them do this to you. Write your congressman and let them know what this drug company is doing. They prey on very sick people with no care for the patient.

I have been successfully using Donnatal grape elixir for decades for static esophogeal spasm, and have not been able to use any other meds such as calcium channel blockers or tricyclic anti-depressants… and have even tried esopogeal Botox injections, etc. I went to get my refill this year and I am finding it seems to no longer be an FDA-approved drug so I can't get it covered by insurance or any discount card. This may be another reason they are charging so much, but it is now out of reach, and I don't know of any alternative to try, nor do my doctors. Would anyone have any suggestions, please?

Re: Eljay (# 2) Expand Referenced Message

I too needed Donnatal & through a pharmacy coupon, got a bottle of 60 for $15, saving over $600, I was told. The trouble is, it’s not the same Donnatal. I also found out that there is only one company (Concordia) who now makes it, so, they are trying to make as much money as they can from an inferior drug! The only drug that helps me somewhat the same is Librax. (I hope that’s it. It’s been awhile). But, it too, costs a fortune! I can’t understand why they took Donnatal off the market. It’s not nearly as bad as the drugs they’ve got now. For myself, I’m learning about cannabis & finding that it does help in a lot of different ways.

Re: Tina (# 4) Expand Referenced Message

I entirely hear you! I need the liquid elixer specifically since this is for static esophageal spasm (when it happens). It's only a few times a year it gets bad enough to use this for it, but it saves me an ambulance ride and ER visit. I tried to qualify for everything through the manufacturer. Concordia seemed to have a program to help patients but I was above the income limit and they didn't care about how high my medical bills are and that there was no money left over. Thanks so much for the added info! I sure wish you the best.

Re: Tina (# 4) Expand Referenced Message

But it IS still on the market. I did get it-- the grape elixir. And with an Rx savings card it is much cheaper.

Being a pharmacist, can you explain why they changed the formula & took out the belladonna? Was it as dangerous as they said? I took it for years. I’m now taking the new formula & it doesn’t work nearly as well as the old. Thanks!

I was in an emergency room and a doctor said I mixed this myself for your spasms. The GI Cocktail instantly and totally relieved spasm pain in the lower part of the cerebellum and down my spine. Medicare part D rules reflects Donnatal Elixer...Not Safe. I was denied the prescription.
