Does Levothyroxine Cause Acne (Page 6)

I have been taking 25mcg for about 6 weeks and feel much better, no weight loss, but no gain. I have developed acne on my chin and around the right side of my mouth...is this a side effect? Anyone else had this happen?

I've been using. .125mg for the past two weeks and I've noticed pimples on my chin and around my mouth , also some chin hairs.

My doctor said it was the levothroxine. She said my thyroid wasn't working like it was suppose too. And now my thyroid was working like it shold which is putting natural oil to moisturize my skin and that's what causes the acne.

I don't get it. People are more interested in pimples than your underactive thyroid? Really? Untreated underactive thyroid causes way more serious problems all over your body than cystic acne. Yes, I have had cystic acne and I have had problems with underactive thyroid. If there is a safe medicine that takes care of both problem and side effect. I am all for it. But if not, I take the synthroid until something better comes along.

You might want to go back and read the original post. There was a question about acne as a side effect that we are not told about. The OP was not about the thyroid problem itself. Maybe this is an issue that doesn't concern or bother you....then, good for you. Rather than being judgmental, perhaps you might want to consider the content of the original question and add something helpful or positive to share.

Hi there I started levothroxine 6 years ago beacuse i couldnt get pregnant and got told it would help as i was slightly on the low side , firstly was put on it 25 mg then it went up from there basically I got severe acne on my face and back chest near enough every where as i got pregnant quick i put it down to hormones , but after having the baby it still was a problem, went to the doctor told him my concerns that levothroxine was causing acne he said that it was in no way the cause so I got referred to dermotolgy and started taking istrotreion I went through hell on it and after the course had finished it came back so I thought screw what the doctors says he scared me to not stop taking it he said my hair would fall out and bad thing would happen !well omg wish I had took my own advise earlier after coming off levothroxine no more cystic out breaks my skin is recovering slowing from acne scaring I had beautiful skin before I took this drug , all in all I hate this drug and it also made me put weight on and cause anxiety depression hope this helps if you are going through what I have been through . I also would like to add I just didn't stop at once I weaned myself off levothroxine as if you do it suddenly can be dangerous I had awful withdrawals but it was worth it no more painful cystic acne .God luck with your journey x

You are a fool if you accept cystic acne on your face as if it is normal. That's all I've got to say.

I've been on it for 2 and a half weeks now and have developed small spots on my chin and jawline. No other symptoms. In fact I feel fab so managing the acne with glycolic facials at the moment. Mine is also 25mcg

Why hasn't there been a class action lawsuit filed against the manufacturers of levothyroxine? Are there any lawyers out there?

I have fought cystic acne for 30 years and wasn't sure why? When I was a teenager I never had acne. It took me this long to do research to find out it may be my Levo and I quit instantly and my face cleared up then I had some minor issues with hot flashes and since my Adrenal Glands are not running as well as they should I asked the doc to try Synthroid and boom my Acne came back with a vengeance. I am now stopping that drug and going with a natural supplement. Synthroid may change my blood results but did not help with anything else.

I am sure it is the Thyroid meds. I even tried Bovine thyroid supplement and it caused my breakouts also. Now trying Thyroid support pure Herbs.

Yes it is a side effect but your doctors will not admit it or don't know better. I dealt with this for a few decades and only in this last year I figured it out and unfortunately I have major scaring from it. I no longer take any Pharm meds for it as I tried them all with no hope. I now take supplements for my thyroid along with adrenal support as they go hand in hand.

Yes I’ve been on 50mcgs for about two months now and I have zits all over my body but not on my face...yet. The zits are full of puss and in really odd places like on my knee or in the crease of the back of my knee and over my torso. Really not happy about this.

I tried Synthroid one more time about a year ago and with a few days the cystic acne was on my scalp !!! I would suggest everyone find out if they have Hashimoto's as that could be what is attacking your Thyroid 99% of doctors don't even check.My thyroid was fine when all of this started but my diet more than likely caused Hashi which attacked my thyroid so now trying to control with diet but happy with no acne!!

I have been taking Synthroid for about 17 years and have been having terrible body trunk acne. I thought it was from our water as we had recently moved to the country. About 2 months ago we put in a filter system for our water and my skin is no better. I then thought about the fact that shortly after we moved into this house I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and put on Synthroid! All of my years and through my adolescence my skin was ALWAYS clear. Not anymore. My skin is so scared and damaged now and after trying everything I am now going to try a different thyroid medication. If this works I will be so happy and so mad at the same time. If this does work I may look into skin treatments for my back and trunk to help repair the damage.
Thanks to all of you that shared your stories so that I can finally have hope for better, pain free skin. Fingers crossed!
