Doctors Willing To Prescribe Heavy Pain Medication In Colorado (Page 23)

Updated

I have a serious problem. My dr. had two patients start dr. shopping and has decided it is too big of a pain in his butt to continue prescribing, even though I have gotten MRIs and Xrays to prove my problems. I have over a half a dozen herniated discs in my low back, along with degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, scoliosis and arthritis in my facet joints. I am currently on5 30mg oxycodone a day for breakthrough and 60mg of methadone for my long lasting meds. I REALLY need a doctor in the Denver, CO area who will not judge me because of my age, thinking I'm just some drug seeker as I TRULY need my meds to function. I am even being placed on disability until I can get my back healed because if something doesn't change I will be in big time pain for the rest of my life. If ANYONE knows of a good doctor that prescribes strong meds willingly in the Denver area please let me know. I am in desperate need of help as I am going to be SCREWED if I cannot find a good doctor. SOMEONE please help me with a doctor!!!!!

On my long acting MS, Rhodes seems to work the best! I get really bad stomach pains with Purdue! On my short acting oxy, Mallincott works by far the best! In being consistent in using the Rhodes MS, I've been able to cut my oxy's by half! I'm not sure who the other maker of oxy's was but they were very similar in size and color, I got absolutely no relief! That's when I started researching if I was the only one with this problem or not, only to find out there were far more with the very same issues! My pharmacist thought I was coo coo but has since changed his mind also after he had knee replacement surgery and had to take it himself! His only explanation was the one I told u guys about, that the fillers that they r using may affect certain folks differently! He also said it could also b that the long acting or visaversa may with your system may counteract one another! There was a group that did a "study" and I use that term loosely, as it was just a group like us that purposely tried same meds but different companies and their experiences were very similar! If I remember the site, I'll post but it was like Ewolk, Blue Light group! Not sure if I'm even spelling it right! But I found it by accident! It seemed like my oxy's weren't working and I was thinking of just weaning myself off out of frustration! I read their study, asked my pharmacist if they could order one specific brand, the one I'm on now! He ordered them in and haven't had any issues since I've stuck to just to the two brands and have been able to decrease my meds! I was needing 8 oxy's a day and now barely take 2-3! I feel it makes a big difference! I think the Purdue, the ones that are bigger (I'm bad at being able to swallow pills of any nature) and the other oxy that looks similar but isn't Mallincott was a bad combo for me! Seems to me when u can drop your meds that much that there's something to it! I'll look up that website and see if I can find their "study"! They also have some good info for folks that want to just do the "natural" route! Folks need to remember though that although "natural and a supplement" make no jokes about it! All drugs were derived from natural substances and I would not add any supplements or such without talking it through with your Dr! Do u guys know when the PT person is at the office? I keep missing them and forget to ask when I'm there! My last 3 visits were not on my regular days because of being hospitalized! I have so much to discuss with them due to my other medical issues that we are usually talking about what they were doing with me medically that I forget! I also wondered this last appointment how many times we have been in the office at the same time and didn't know it!

Mac I didn't complete my sentence!! lol I was frustrated, the RPH at King's told me it was the DEA, but as someone did correct me it is just king's that is doing this and i'm in Aurora which is S..E. Denver...There is not a Rite Aid near me at all. I want to thank (I think Janeygirl )for elaborating exactly whats really going on

Janeygirl my shrink told me he truly believes that that my welbutrin XL is no different from welbutrin Sr etc. He doesn't believe the time release on these meds make a difference, he clearly explained to me he thinks all generics are the same too!!

I went in May 2013 for umbilic hernia, I had my breakthrough meds on my person, and the nurse was preparing to send it to the hospital pharmacy for "safe keeping" my gut told me not to, my kids and fiancé were on their way to see me before surgery I gave my meds to him to take home for me. Also I know it's kinda lazy of me but if you could post theses addresses and personel that you have written about our struggle, and unfair treatment I will write them as well. Please and thank you!!

Janeygirl, King's here in S.E Denver, Aurora told they will not fill any narcotic in excess to 120 mg.s from all sources, I sure panicked for a minute 0r 60!! Ive never been able to fill MScontin in excess of a 30mg dose, but King's in Arvada filled for me a few times. Target in my area didn't carry that 60 mg dose neither. But there's the thing about 6 months ago my Dr. increased my 30 mg. to 60 mgs and I told him i'm having a hard time finding the 60 mgs, can you write a 30mg 6 times a day..He said just take it where you can when you can. Just as of Nov. 1 they had to change their policies taper down or go elsewhere. ( no pain contract signed or ever requested) I'm willing to sign a contract, but I need them to write the 30's so I can lock down the script to that pharmacy......Just telling my struggles i'm not going to elaborate that they accused me of writing an oxycodone scrip myself one that I dropped off, then she told my dr. I had received hydrocone, but failed to tell my dr. that it was the yr. before, so it took a month to the dr to get back in the US and verify then I had to...oh it was a mess!! sorry if I keep jumping..Have a good One and stay positive.. a personal mantra I have is to not put a name on my dis-ease, but I refer to as a CHALLENGE, claiming to someway, somehow ease it...

Chaos, it's been difficult since King Sooper's changed their policies at best! I'm not sure folks realize that their policy is just that, their policy! Other pharmacies did adapt to their policy which makes it worse but the cherry on the top is pharmacies that do carry the meds, now require speaking to the Dr, not any office help but the Dr himself before they will fill the script! I've had so many issues with this pharmacy will allow u x amt of one drug but then don't carry the other type of drug that u think u r a ok seeing a good Dr, getting yourself on a program that works for you and then BOOM the pharmacies start to practice medicine! King Sooper's is strange because it varies store to store how strict the are with the types of drugs they carry and how many they will allow! I don't have a RiteAid by me but in trying to find a pharmacy that carries both of my meds, has been a nightmare! One pharmacy will carry one or the other or another will only allow a certain amt to b dispensed! My Doc's know the issues and actually have a list of pharmacies NOT to use! Walgreen's seems to carry what my scripts are for but they r way expensive! WalMart doesn't carry my extended release but has no restrictions on amounts of short term meds! I have to admit, I am on a weird dose of my long term meds but they don't carry any dose of this medication! Target u can just forget, they don't carry most meds and have to speak to your Doc, Safeway carries both without restrictions but doesn't carry my weird dose, my best bet has been with local pharmacies or pharmacies that are located in hospitals because they seem to carry both long and short term meds because the Dr's have their offices in or beside the hospital! Unfortunately with my long acting med that's a weird dose, u can't even cut in half because it no longer acts as long as it should, so no option there! It's a struggle either way u go but what has been helpful for me is to have my Dr write on the actual script that they r aware that meds were written by Doc's they r aware of! It seems to cut down the amt of drama when they pull up your profile and see multiple Doc's that have written your scripts! The whole pain management situation really upsets me anymore! If u use these meds appropriately, u should b able to live your life but when folks see u while medicated, they question why u need to be on them! I used to work for the RailRoad doing their workman's comp! These guys start at a young age working and the work is very physical, by age 40, their bodies, especially their backs are fried! I can't tell u the amt of supervisors that I argued with that just because they saw these "hurt" guys playing a few holes of golf didn't mean that they could work! The goal of pain management to to get u functional! If they played golf they assume u can function, their bosses had no idea what it took for one of these guys to actually b able to live their lives! I also get mad at Doc's who are biased in a similar manner! They need to walk 24 hours in a pain persons life to understand why we need to b on meds! There's no doubt some folks abuse their meds but it's statistically about 3%, so many people r walking around or laying on the couch because of these few guys! Same judgement that I was "doctor shopping" when I wanted to find a Doc who knew what they were doing and actually examined me! It's also no different than Doc's believing that all meds work the same on each patient! They have no idea what fillers these companies use and although they r allowed to produce their own version of one drug, they can't b the exact same because then they would be "stealing" another companies product! The drug companies wouldn't allow that! Unfortunately this isn't just with narcotic meds! My son is diabetic, got a cold and couldn't understand why his blood sugars were off the wall! In researching what he was taking, the cold medicine contained Orange Dye 6, I think! Well this dye contains sugar! No where in the package is this noted as a possible complication for diabetics! According to the FDA dye's and such don't need to b listed because they aren't a "med"! This is no different than the narcotic meds we have to take! The only side effects listed are ones directly related to the base medication! Having had a cardiac arrest from an electrical issue with my heart, I've found that most Doc's have no idea that certain drugs give different side effects! Any drug that is prescribed to me, I look up on the Internet and check! The info we need won't be listed on the drug information site! How I find out if I shouldn't take or if two drugs could cause me an issue is to Google your drug (be specific) by manufacturer and your medical issue! Such as "Zicam+type one diabetics", I just use this as an example! By looking it up in this manner, u will find information that the drug companies don't want u to know or that your Doc doesn't know about! The information u put in such as the manufacter will provide u with side effects that the FDA doesn't think it's important for u to know! It's surprising how many medications that we get have a long term side effect of "back pain"! Unfortunately medicine is a science or practice and these side effects only happen to a small amount of people but it doesn't matter the percentage that these side effects happen to, if it's u, it's 100%!! So my two pearls of wisdom is to shop around by calling pharmacies prior to taking your script to one and find out if they carry the med and they have enough to fill your script! Pharmacies can fill part of your script but the full script must be to u within 72 hours or your script is null and void! So if something happens and they can't complete your order, u may have to get a different script! The second thing is to look up your script with who manufactured it and whatever u have going on and find out if anything that's in your prescription doesn't have any side effects that could b an issue! If u r concerned, take your info and talk to your pharmacist about it! It may not b your exact drug that's an issue but how it interacts with all of your meds that could b an issue! It's your body and when the side effects are far longer than their benefit, I'd look for something else! I find it really sad that those of us in treatment for something have to become a doc ourselves to make sure we r getting the best benefits we can! Lastly, if possible, try to use the mom and pop pharmacies, not the big stores, to fill your scripts! They r more than likely going to listen to your concerns, will have and can take the time to research for u and once they get to know u, they actually listen to what has gone on with u and not as likely to flag u if the doc you go to happens to have six partners and doesn't read it as u getting drugs from lots of other Dr's! I had an issue that became a mess! I had to use a larger pharmacy because my pharmacy is closed on the weekend! They didn't have enough meds to fill my script! I forgot about this and made an appointment with my Dr and expressed my concern that I was out of meds way early! He wrote me another script but when I went to fill, they wouldn't fill it because it was too early! They called my doc, made a big deal about me trying to get more meds, only to find out a week later that the reason I was out early was that they never finished filling my initial script! It was the pharmacies mistake but I almost lost my doc over it! So be careful, keep your documentation inline and don't get in trouble because these bigger stores don't have the time to really investigate things! I hope this helps!

I am new to the Denver area and I have recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, severe osteoarthritis in l1-l7 and I'm working a diagnosis for my crippling back pain and many other body pain symptoms I'm having. I've seen four doctors...none of which wantedto give me anything for my pain. I've missed three weeks of work because I couldn't even walk my bones and my back hurt so bad. If anyone can recommend a doctor for pain that's not going to shove me off as a druggie that'd be great. I use to take Percocet, but it didn't really help, and then I had tramadol and Norco which seemed to relieve the pressure in my back. Dilaudid helped a little for the pain but didn't take it away completely. But no doctor wants to give me anything narcotic. They keep handing me ibuprofen and other anti inflammatories. Which doesn't work AT ALL. please help. I am 25 years old and 2 years from completing my bachelor's in nursing ....I'm trying to become an NP. I can't even go to school anymore because the pain is unbearable it brings me to tears and I have nothing For it I just want to be a normal young woman. I have to fight to get out of bed and the pain is so bad sometimes I want to kill myself. (I'm not suicidal, I'm just saying that's how extreme the pain is) so any doctors that can help take the pain away would be greatly appreciated.

You're under the wrong impression with pain medications. Nothing will EVER take all the pain away. It just dumbs it down enough for you to be able to live. And I'm not sure if you mean l1-s2 but no spine has 7 lumbar vertebrae. There are only 5. But I'm sorry you're dealt with all this pain, I know the feeling. But you have to understand that doctors' licenses are on the line by writing scripts to people who don't have diagnosis. But there are numerous doctors which have been talked about on here but mine won't we Feb see you without diagnoses. But read through the forum and just call them or go in. That's all you can do. There are names on here, just read through these posts. Best of luck.

Mac I couldn't agree with you more! When I say that I'm able to function or possibly make it seem like I'm "pain free", I am thrilled with living with a pain level of four! To me it's similar to the folks who have plastic surgery and who are ill prepared that surgery is surgery and it's going to hurt! Somehow folks that get plastic surgery expect not to hurt and they feel results should b immediate! Another falsehood is that after taking a medication for a long period of time, upping the dose will help decrease the pain! This is how many people overdose! By increasing their doses or self medicating with other meds, alcohol or street drugs! Very dangerous! I am very clear with my doc's, hospitals or whoever needs to know, that I'm happy with a level 4! Nothing that I know of will totally take your pain away! Another similar issue that I find is people waking up and really hurting! Many pain people are given a sleeping medication! Sleep is an issue when u have chronic pain! Be aware of what u have been prescribed! Most are an amnesic! What happens is u take your medicine, u sleep or u think u sleep! U still continue to have pain, u just don't remember that you have tossed and turned all night! Your body may actually hurt more than usual because u may move in positions that u typically couldn't tolerate! There really isn't anything to do to fix this, other than being aware of it and perhaps adjusting your medicine to accommodating for the increased pain! The way I take my medicine may seem odd and I have a hard time examining this to hospital staff! I have a pacemaker! The first year or so, I only paced when I was very relaxed and ready to go to sleep! I would get flipped out when I paced! I'm one of those freaky people that can te when I'm pacing and whether I'm pacing from the atrium or ventricle! The doc's think it's a neat "trick" but it's not funny to me at all! It flipped me out that machine was keeping me alive! They gave me a very low dose of an anti-anxiety medicine! This acted like the scenario above to me! I still had pain, tossed and turned while still being freaked out which made me give myself spasms by guarding my body! So I'd wake up in the worst pain! By later afternoon, early evening, I was pretty comfortable for me! So I take my highest dose first thing in the am, a medium dose in the after noon and the lowest in the evening! I take a fairly low dose late afternoon, early evening to keep me covered through the night and no short term meds because although I still hurt it seemed to make me hyper and mostly because of anxiety! So unless I really need it because I am going out or doing something I keep away from anything but my lowest dose then! Sometime between 4 and no later than 7! My doc and I know that my script is written x amt every six hours but what I actually do is my highest dose and a short term pill first thing in the am! A little bit smaller dose about noon, basically I don't take a short acting dose with my extended release unless needed noontime and only part of my extended release as my last dose and take my anti-anxiety/ muscle relaxer before bed! With chronic pain people a truly schedule doesn't really work most of the time, making people need their breakthrough meds more often than they really do! Pay attention to when your highest and lowest pain needs are and when u need to use your breakthrough meds, this gives your doc a plethora of information that is useful! Many patients do not take their meds or the right meds in manner that can help them the best! There r dosages that work 4, 8 and 12 hour increments! Although the same medicine, I take two different types! My day time meds are 8 hour time released and my last of the day is 12 hour and the only time I take my breakthrough on a scheduled time is the first time in the morning! Keeping a "pain diary" which includes what u r doing, what level of pain u r in and what u took can help so much to get u dosed right! With my schedule, other than things I couldn't foresee, I pretty much remain a consistent 4! Doses don't have to b taken what the drug
Company suggests! It really should b written according to what your needs are! I in no way, shape or form do I suggest that u do this by yourself! U need to do this with your health care provider! You need to provide your doc with good, truthful information! Real pain doc's will not judge u! Where u run into a dangerous situation is where u take your long acting meds and they aren't working, so u increase your short acting meds, ending up consistently run out of your short acting drug! What your "pain program" ideally should look like is x amount of your long acting drug and use of your short acting drug will not b consistent! If you find that u consistently need your short acting drug everyday at the same time everyday, then u probably need to have your long acting drug dose increased! It's a big hint if u need your short acting drug consistently then your long acting drug either needs to have the dose changed or maybe even a different drug! U can't express too much that your long acting drug is the drug that's driving your bus! So it's like u taking your blood pressure medicine! U take it consistently, your short acting drug should b more like u taking aspirin! U only take it when u need it! This doesn't mean that u can't take it on a daily basis, most do! What changes is the time, situations or whatever! I consistently take my breakthrough meds everyday! Just the time I take it varies! But I only take a small dose and Never more than three! I often don't take any in a day at all but somedays I may need six (which I'm allowed but rarely need)! The bottom line is, it's your body and your pain, it's your responsibility to drive the bus! Your doc can't tell that everyday at four o'clock u have to take 2 of your short acting meds! Additionally, say your dose is 60mg four times a day but u r finding u needing all of your short acting meds consistently! Your doc doesn't have to up your dose to 100mg four times a day! He can order 75mg in the morning, 75mg at lunch and 60mg in the evening! In other words, dosages don't have to b the exact same dose throughout the day! Dosages can b upped or downed as needed to keep u covered! You really need to leave short acting drugs totally out of the picture! Short acting drugs really should b treated like someone taking aspirin! Yes, some docs do prescribe and count these meds in but truly until u r stabilized they should b left out of the picture! It was a hard concept for me to embrace because my short acting meds didn't make me sleepy, gave me quick relief and gave me what I felt was the best relief! My doc kept me on my same long term med dose and kept upping my short acting meds! Very quickly I found out that my body quickly got used to the drug and I was taking dosages that were quickly affecting my liver! In a way thank God all this stuff came down because with the change of my doc, so did how he managed my meds! I knew all this prior to my changes but like most pain patients, I was afraid to make changes! Here I was preaching to the choir yet afraid to do the right thing! I was taking a very small dose on my long term meds and the highest dose on my short term ones and couldn't understand why my pain level wasn't consistent and peaked and valleyed so much that I had to schedule what I was doing by when I could take my meds! I no longer have this happening and it's made my life way more consistent and at a level I could consistently live with! Try it! I think u will b surprised! I hope this extra info I dole out helps! I know that many of your already know this info but in reading threads written, I'm shocked at how little about pain management folks actually know! Getting a doc and especially the right doc is such a small part in pain management and believe me, I understand the fear but you really need to understand pain management to help the doc medicate you properly! I hear my doc won't write for this or for that, most doc's will write for what u need when u give them appropriate info and well documented information! They can only help u with the right info! People get hung up on what dose and what med people r getting scripts for when what they need to focus on what dose and what med works for them! It's no wonder people get disappointed when the doc won't write for a gazziloon of short acting drugs! U understand by far it's the easiest manner for u to medicate but it isn't! Wanting lots of short acting meds immediately puts up a big red flag with real pain doc's and with reason! These patients r the ones that end up oding! No doc wants to have a patient die on them just because it was easier to write the script than take the time to educate! It's a big setup for red flags and disappointment that u didn't get what u want! I'm more than happy to help anyone look over their meds and make suggestions for u to talk to your doc with and educate any pain patient how pain management truly works! It isn't about taking u off your meds but it does take time to get adjusted to the right dose and med! If u r a real pain management patient, u won't go without! The worst thing, with all the changes, that u want is to look like a drug seeker because they will drop u like a hot potato! I read most of the posts here and if I hadn't read earlier posts, I would b questioning whether folks were seeking meds or not and all of it is from not understanding not only how to b medicated appropriately but wanting to know what doc gives the meds u want and how many! Everyone is different and your program shouldn't look like someone else's! Contact me if u need help! Educate yourself! Be responsible for what works for u, not how many, what dose and what doc seems to b "easy"! None of this is in your best interest! Getting to live your life is! Take care!

Ok I'm not trying to be mean. But if you join this forum, READ THROUGH IT before you ask for a doctor. We've taken the time to share info and we shouldn't have to say the same thing every single time a new person comes on and asks. You can do your own reading. It just gets old having to say the same thing EVERY SINGLE TIME. If you really need a doctor, you can take the time to browse through what people who have posted previously have said.

Rainbow have you not tried cpr? And no worries. But does anyone see if good girl too ever responded to what she thought was so judgmental. And sorry that I don't approve of Pele abusing pain medications to feel high. I lost my sister to abuse and it only makes it that much harder when thru screw it up for is team pain patients. I don't care how you became addicted. Get on suboxone and stop just playing doctors to make yourself feel high and screwing it up for us real pain patients in the process. That's honestly selfish as hell if you ask me.

To Stephanie, No worries and I would say it's worth the trip to not be dying of pain every month. And John it is absolutely still a great place to go if you have legitimate reasons to be on pain meds. They require diagnostics before they even see you. And everyone else, I apologize for being short. It's just i get a email EVERY time there is a post and when many people ask the same question that had already been asked numerous times I just say read through the forum. There is good info.
