Doctors Who Prescribe Methadone (Page 12)

Updated

I am addicted to strong pain meds and I am tired of having to come off of them, the withdrawal is awful. I went to a urgent care doc and was prescribed suboxone. I take anxiety meds too but he wants me to stop. I really need the anxiety meds but he wants me off them. How do I get him to change it from suboxone to methadone so I can take my anxiety meds?

I wanted to let you know that the first relief I found to neuropathy was from oxycodone 10mg. I have since seen a neurologist and started on nortriptyline and worked up to 150mg and the pain is tolerable. My toes still get numb, but it's so much better. One downside is that you will most likely gain weight.

I come down 2mgs every two weeks I really would like to find a doctor that I could go every month maybe and not pay crazy prices or drive as far. Hi. So I don't understand why you were on the 145 mg. of methadone and now you're down to 13 mg. Why is that? What are you taking the methadone for? I've been on it for many years and know a lot about it but without knowing your story (details) it is difficult to give you an opinion. Are you taking it for pain or for opiate addiction?

Your Methadone treatment is exactly that, treatment - either for opiate management or for pain management. I am guessing by what you wrote you are in it for opiate management. Yes, it is a b**** of a drive but the reasoning behind it is, you would do just about anything for your drug of choice anyway so you shouldn't have a problem with the drive and cost. You should really try to get on Suboxone (if it is for opiate management) it lasts longer, and in all reality, you do get a buzz off of it. The downside is you can also experience withdrawals from it as well and it takes a couple of days to actually feel the effects as opposed to opiate withdrawals so keep that in mind. The Suboxone helps with the opiate cravings as it is technically an opiate blocker. A small amount works so maybe you won't have to drive as far and as often to obtain the medication or maybe the doctor can write a Rx on your behalf. By any chance are you having to provide a u/a each time you see your doctor?

Good luck!

Some doctors CAN prescribe it. My doctor before she moved prescribed it for me for several months. At 80mg a day. She weaned me off. I told her it was for addiction. They have to have a special license to prescribe.

Sweetie,

Your best bet is to change doctors if you want to keep both, anxiety meds and opioid treatment meds because your doctor has it already made up in his mind how he is going to treat your condition. Once they do that, there is no changing their minds. I am going through a similar situation. My doc of six years - things were good, I was compliant - no issues. He retired and the new doctor wants me to go through hoops and crap that I've already done 6 or 7 times to prove how bad my condition is. It finally got to a good point, I lost 100 lbs., became more active, less office visits, PROOF that I did better on 4 tablets a day rather than 3 tablets. The doc wants to fix what isn't broken and wean me off when I have 3 separate chronic pain issues. I told her to look at the weight chart, the number of visits, the my activity, and she is hell-bent on decreasing my meds. I am so mad and have so much anxiety over this. I was on 3 tablets/day for 6 years so I know what is in store. I won't feel well very often, become less active (which is opposite of what you want to do according to the pain scale). She has proof that it improve my life considerably and won't consider it. F8#& Bi#c#! So I feel for you but you need to find a new doctor that will listen to you and understand that you are being extremely RAW, extremely honest about your condition. Please note: If you are on Suboxone and are prescribed anti-anxiety, barbiturates, and the like, it is a no go. If the doctor forgets, the pharmacy will catch it. It is because often when the two mix, they create a "high" that is very, very attractive. I had a friend on it who would seek out xanax, etc... while on Suboxone to attain that high. As an added note: I was told by a former H addict that he would rather come off of H any day of the week than to come off of Xanax or Valium, etc... because as horrendous as the H withdrawals are, the X & V withdrawals are even worse, much, much worse. Good luck to you Sweetie. Let me know how you progress.

No... don't start by brother has been taking methadone for years and he is not only ill and in pain without the methadone. And worse he is now addicted, and goes through really bad pain and anxiety without his methadone. He found a doctor to proscribe marijuana... which does not effect your eternal organs, just puts you at ease!

Sorry it took me so long to write back. Yes I do have to take u/a every time I go which is every two weeks and I was addicted to vicodin, nothing else. I got addicted to vicodin when I had my kidney surgery. They put me on vicodin and after that I just got really addicted to it. I couldnt do my daily functions without having vicodin so that's when I switched to the methadone clinic 6 years ago and been there every since. I added that up 6 years times $100 a week. I'm in it for over $32,000 that's a lot of money for me with 3 children and a single mother working two jobs and going to school. So I was just wondering if anybody knew maybe where a doctor was in or around where I live in East Texas that prescribes methadone? I'm on 7mgs and coming down 1mgs every 2 weeks.

Hey Tasha!

First of all, you need to see things in a different way! Let's look at the information you provided and go from there, okay?

You recognized you had an issue with Vicoden - don't feel badly about that, Vicoden is one of the most addictive drugs - that drug is responsible for all the new changes they have made. So quit beating yourself up!

1. Recognizing your issue you sought help and have successfully been able to "manage" your issue, not only for yourself but for your family too.
2. You manage to hold a job to support yourself and your kids.
3. You may or may not have relapsed, if you did, you quickly remedied the situation.
4. The money you mentioned spending at the clinic, well the alternative would have been a lot more money and the consequences a lot worse. It is not unreasonable for an addict to spend at a minimum $100/day for their habit, leaving nothing for food for themselves and their kids. You, my dear, provide for your family and make sure they eat, are well clothed, safe and sound.

So even though it is inconvenient and it cost you ~ $100/week for maintenance, you are doing an outstanding job. You are not being selfish and thinking only about yourself and your needs. You love your family, obviously. The alternative is too awful to think about, letting them starve, having them taken away by Child Services, that would crush you. So my dear, you are doing great. When the time comes for you, you may cut down on the methadone or not. That is your decision.

Please pat yourself on the back, I would do it if I were there! You are doing great and recognize your achievements. Know that the $100/week could very easily turn into $100/day so be grateful of the choices you've made. I am proud of you, kiddo.

Keep this in mind, they - the Methadone clinics - charge "high prices" because they figure you would pay anything for your drug of choice - and it is true, you would at the best price you could get it.

Chad, As of now the DEA has them unable to do this as of 6/15. My personal physician wrote me the following. ... 180mg methadone #90 1mg klonopin #30mg 150mg trazadone #30 10mg ambien #60 30mg adderall. nexium 40mg BP med and thyroid. I'm not an addict trust me, as a matter of fact he is an addiction specialist! All i had to do is miss 1 apt and was told it wasnt a good fit so i was dropped as a patient! He went into a family practice Thanks to the DEA'S"throw the baby out with the bath water"policy to stop abuse i tried to get into a methadone clinic and answered all of their questions honestly as l don't lie.except to preserve feelings..ex.do I look fat in this dress? How do you say yes, even if she does?anyway they told me i didnt qualify use the clinic i wasnt an addict. Never have just 1 dr do your pain mgt and be your regular dr. Yes it was golden 9 years but now I'm out in the cold seeing a quack for refills who keeps referring me to pain clinics that don't write Methadone! they want me to take strong long acting opiates that need ever increasing doses unlike methadone that levels off and gave me 90 % relief!!! I'm not trying to feel high, just live a productive life. over the past 10 years I have developed 9 rental properties from the ground up by myself that I own and live on the lease income. Now I can't work due to severe pain and can't maintain them. how is that fair? I'm not the only one suffering. The fact is addicts will get their fix from the black market or on the net on the black Web with VPN'S and tor networks, which promise total privacy but that's not always the case, some record your web address! Don't think they won't give it up when the feds eventually track them down! A person that has severe pain may be forced to do the same and end up w/ federal charges. Thank the DEA for all of this. I understand that statistics say there is a problem. my understanding is the US. has like 3% of the worlds population and uses 98% of the hydrocodone but tying Dr's hands to properly treat pain is not the answer.

What Doctor is this? I don't take any street drugs but I have been taking about 20mgs a day, it started not every day but now I have a full addiction and I can't detox anytime soon. I have to travel between Cali and Arizona a lot and I can't be sick. I am totally awake and aware and all good on even 20mg every OTHER day, but skipping a day is starting to hurt. I really need a doctor, I would pass my drug panel. Any info would be great!

PS...I used to be addicted for years. I went to a clinic and at one time my dose was as high as 160mg a day, I NEVER want to do that again! I quit for 2 years, and my dumba** is addicted again.

The DEA is all up in arms because Prescription drug related deaths are higher than H, Ice, Crack, Meth, etc... all combined. This is making them very stringent in there guidelines related to prescription-related drug issues quite a priority and it hurts the people it is supposed to help. Anytime someone goes to the ER, drug seeking, for meds that they don't really need, only to feel high off of; therefore, puts the rest of us who need them in a bad light. In fact some dude I met at NA (long story) would hit up the hospital every month or so just to get pain meds. It got so bad, he - whether intentionally or not (probably intentionally just knowing him) started having issues with falling in the tub leaving 2 black eyes, or getting hit by a car (twice within 2 months - who does that?) and when he told me he broke his back he asked me to take him to the hospital and stay with him because it would look better to the doctors. Mind you, he'd been there at least 6 times within the past 3 months. The doctors, tired of his game, got together and arranged for him to see a Pain Specialist who could prescribe medication for him and monitor his use. Can you believe that? That was there way of saying, "Don't come back." Of course he didn't get the message and some other injurious accident occurred so he could come back again. When I went with him because of his back, I discovered he was seeking meds and his back really wasn't broken. They gave him 15 4mg Dilaudid for his pain. I took him to the pharmacy so he could fill it. While the pharmacist was filling the Rx, he was pacing back and forth like he was in heat or something. I am not saying he didn't need the medication for his "back which was really only a bruised Rotator Cuff at worst" and 4 hours later (it is never a "quick" trip to the ER," angered me so much about his seeking that makes it really bad for the people who do need it. If I have to go to the ER, I know they have access to my pharmacy file and know how much, when, where, etc... of what I am taking and can also see from the information if I am abusing or not, they display it monthly with the entire year charted out. It is damn near impossible for anyone to have a spotless year, as it flags you if you have been admitted into Rehab; if you tried to commit suicide, if you are receiving more and more tablets each refill or getting extra prescriptions from other doctors. It is ALL there. Even with this information and you are managing your intake, doctors with access to that information can be really mean to you, despite how good you are. They begin accusing you of Chemical Dependency and such. If you use the opiates for a medical reason, it is called "Opiate/Opioid Tolerant." Some doctors do not see the differentiation of what Opiate/Opioid Tolerant vs. Chemical Dependency vs. Addiction but there are differences. Being up front about everything usually works much better than thinking taking a chance they won't look up your record or withholding any information.

Good luck - I do wish I could help and that I had happier news re: the DEA.

I have been taking methadone for pain for ten years. Dr accused me of having a dirty u/a with suboxone. No not even pain clinics will take me. Even though everyone has said I couldn't have used these 2together. I am so scared, angry bcuz I never ever used suboxone. I just lost my husband of 40 years in accident. I'm going to have nervous meltdown, or heart attack. Dr said he called pain clinic, and told them I was good person, and he didn't believe I took suboxone. Why wouldn't he just give me my scripts? He said legal advisors say no. Is this true? If so what can I do besides die??
