Disappearance Of 12mg Chlor-trimeton.... Again

Updated

Question! Where can I find Chlor-Trimeton 12hr 12mg allergy pills? (near San Diego, CA) It seems that whenever a new allergy medicine comes on the market (Claritin, Zyrtec), CT disappears for a year or so. Available in Canada as Chlor-Tripolon but only for a short while as everyone in the US starts buying it on-line when CT disappears. This time, I haven't noticed any new product roll-out. Question 2- WHY does it disappear? I've been taking it regularly for over 50 years and only recently (last few years) has it been doing this disappearing act.

I second Phils question. Chlor-Trimeton 12hr is very good for me. Why does it keep disappearing here in Michigan too!

I just noticed Allegra became OTC(over the counter). Chlor-Trimeton always disappears when a new allergy product is introduced. The same thing happened when both Claritin and Zyrtec became OTC. I wonder if the same company owns them and takes CT off the market to generate sales for the new product.

Chlor-Trimeton 12-hour contains 12mgs of Chlorpheniramine, an antihistamine used to treat allergy symptoms.

Chlorpheniramine is freely available over the counter, in varying dosages, as both name brand and generic products.

Thus, your immediate solution might be to just purchase an alternative.

It is manufactured by Scherring-Plough Canada.

Allegra is manufactured by Sanofi Aventis, so no, they are not manufactured, nor owned by the same company.

I wanted to let all of you know, who are looking for Chlor-Trimeton 12 Hour, that the brand had reentered the market in the spring of 2010 but then had a recall in Nov. 2010, although KVK-Tech, a pharmaceutical manufacturer located in Pennsylvania, had launched their FDA approved equivalent, Chlorpheniramine Maleate Extended Release 12 mg under the new trademarked name, Chlorphen-12. Our site will be up and running within a week at www.chlorphen12.com. You can find our product at many pharmacies or at drugstore.com or amazon.com. You can always ask your pharmacist to order Chlorphen-12 for you because it is available at all the suppliers to drug stores around the country. I hope this helps. NDC #s are 10702-0017-24 or 10702-0017-06

No 12 mg. alternatives are "freely available" in the San Diego area. Chlor-Trimeton was the only Chlorpheniramine 12mg in all of the drug and/or department stores checked. In fact, I don't recall ever seeing such.

A correction to my reply to Verwon.
Yes, alternatives are "freely available"(4mg) but my discussion thread was for 12mg/time release ONLY

Hello Phil- Did you see my reply below on April 15 where I mention where you can get Chlorpheniramine Maleate Extended Release 12 mg? If you only want to buy it locally, just ask your pharmacist to look up these NDC #s and they can order it from their wholesaler NDC #s are 10702-0017-24 (24 count box) or 10702-0017-06 (60 count bottle). Chlorphen-12 is the only FDA approved Chlorpheniramine Maleate ER 12 mg available in the US right now. Good luck...

Thank you, Lori
The mailman just delivered 2 60 ct. bottles of Chlorphen-12, bought through Amazon.com. I guess I'm just not used to searching/buying on-line and did not even think to look until I saw your posts.
Once again, THANKS!!

Just spoke with customer relations at the Merck website. It is apparently a "low-volume product" so they only manufacture it in periodic batches. The recall from November pretty much depleted all the product from the last batch and there is no set date for when they are going to be making another. I think next time I see it in stores I'll stock up with 3 or 4 boxes to maintain a reserve since it's the only stuff that works for me.

I forgot to mention that the new website is up for Chlorphen-12 at chlorphen12.com to get more information about the only FDA - ANDA approved Chorpheniramine Maleate Extended Release 12 mg Tablets, compared to Chlor-Trimeton 12 Hour.

I'm frustrated too. I've tried many antihistamines & for years Chlor-Trimeton 12 hr. works best for me. Was glad when it returned to the stores last yr. Now it is gone AGAIN! Don't want to have to remember to take the 4 hr. version thru the day. I did just receive my order of Chlorphen - 12 hr from Amazon online. Can get a 60 ct. bottle for $15.99 + shipping. Provider is American Wholesaler. I hope it works as well as Chlor-Trimeton.......I'm also going to Check with my local hometown pharmacy to see if they can get it.

Hi Holly
I got 2 60ct.bottles of Chlorphen-12 from American Wholesaler in May for $23.98. ($10 a bottle plus shipping)
I had hoped the price would stay the same since that was a lot lower than what I could be paying for Chlor-Trimeton. I don't like the idea of a $5.99 price hike but it's still a little lower and more importantly, I guess, is the simple fact that it is available. (I agree with your comment about the 4mg).

Did the Chlorophen-12 work for you as well as Chlor-Trimeton? I bought 12 boxes the last time I saw it, and jut used the last one last night. I know it expired 01/12 but what's a month or two when it works?

here in Canada, the 12 mg. tablets were discontinued over 18 months ago. I had used them for 40 years. So I began buying 24 tab packs of 4 mg. This got expensive real quick. So now I buy 1,000 tablet bottles of 4 mg. from medi-vet for $36.35 ($6.35 per bottle + $30.00 international shipping). A bottle lasts me six months and saves me over $100.00 compared to buying the 24 tab packs. I take 3 in the morning & 1 at bedtime.

Does anyone else' doctor look at them like they are crazy when they say that NONE of the over the counters work as well as Chlortrimeton? I know mine does. I've taken it for probably 50 years and it is the only thing that works. I've tried everything else it works for maybe 5 hours even though it says 12 hours.

I have been using your product under the Leader lable, NDC 37205-117-62. The local pharmacy that I was geting them at has recently closed. Do you know of any pharmacies in the Bakersfield, California area either under the your lable or under the Leader lable. If not then I will order online.

You're right. Nothing works as well and as fast. My doctor is also a bit dismissive when I mention this. I had been buying it in Mexico when it went off of the market the first time. I no longer feel safe traveling to Mexico and have to wait until someone I know is going. I don't know if it is still available there.

This is the only drug that works consistently. I'm headed to Costco to pick up a bottle of 4mg, 100ct for under $2. (per the pharmacist over the phone.) I'll check to see if they have 12mg.

You're probably just very swayed by marketing/placebo effect as they are basically the same thing. If someone gave you chlorpheniramine without the box, you'd probably do fine on it.

Re: Justine the Just (# 58) Expand Referenced Message

They are the only ones selling it in the US so of course they're going to charge a premium for it. That's business.

Re: Shea (# 62) Expand Referenced Message

That Bayer salesman was either ignorant or purposely misleading. I have been using Chlor-trimeton since about 1955 when it was still a prescription drug. Chlor-trimeton was the brand name. The generic name, in other words the drug's chemical name, always has been chlorpheniramine maleate.
