Dilaudid Changes

Hello , my doctor had me on 10 mg of oxyneo for chronic pain in my arm. It's was never enough for me. Anyway , I had thyroid surgery neck dissection for cancer. My neck hurts a lot from surgery so my doctor put me on dilaudid 6mg extended release and 4 to 8 mg every 4 hours through out the day. 8 mg helps for about an hour. Should I discuss raising the extended release to 12 mg for more releif ?

You need to tell your dr if the pain medication isn't helping the pain like it is suppose to. He is the best one to decide what changes need to be made.

Thanks I will do that. I think if they raise my mg I should be ok. The doctor is starting me off at a low dose , then gradually move it up. Is 8 mg every 4 hours with 12 mg extended release every 12 hours a lot? Or is that dose ok?

@Chris,

The usual prescribed "starting dose" for Dilaudid is listed as 2-4mg to be taken every 4 to 6 hours. However, finding the appropriate dosage for you outside of that range is solely up to the whit & whim of your doctor, based on their evaluation.

So like BL said, I'd probably suggest calling your doctor first to verify what amount you should really be taking. Although I don't think it's uncommon for chronic pain patients to require such a dose.
