Dexedrine Brand Mfg History: Skf, Skb, Gsk.

Updated

Glaxo Smith Kline had Abbott Labs of North Chicago Illinois
manufacturing under license from GSK the "E-19" Dexedrine Sulfate during most of this decade, until, the Spring of 2009, when manufacturing of 5 mg orange heart I/R Dexedrine was stopped, a production run since 1937!!!
It is my understanding that the "brand Dexedrine Spansules" the extended release 5 mg version, also has been discontinued. Citation needed. Previous, Glaxo Smith Kline had Cardinal Pharma of both Kentucky, and, another firm out of Albuquerque NM, producing, the 10 and 15 mg. brand Dexedrine pink and white pellet Spansules. In New Mexico, it was Catalent Pharma. "i do not have a clue in 2012, if GSK, has anyone producing for USA citizens their famous brand name Dexedrine Spanusles. I do know that the AWP, average wholesale price, of branded "Dexedrine Spansules" at 15 mg extended release, had tripled in price, from 1994 until, 2008, a time span of only 14 yrs, from $1.00 each to $3.00 each, "wholesale" and, that the majority of scripts filled since at least 2004 has been by Barr Laboratories, substitute generic Dexedrine Spansules, and, were, on most insurance formularies, and, were quite inexpensive, that is, before the "Adderall crisis". My pharmacist, told me that the 10 and 15 mg. generic Teva/Barr Dexedrine Spansules could be ordered, if I desired them, but my interpretation, was that all of Barr Labs prices increased since January 2012 on all of their amphetamine/dextroamphetamine salts. (tablets or capsules). I paid a $57.00 surcharge, in february 2012, with my Blue Cross Blue Shield Insurance for 90 tabs of Barr amphetamine salts, (generic Adderall) while, last year, all I had to pay was ten bucks per script of 90 tabs, of either, Barr 12.5 generic Adderall, 10 mg Barr generic Adderall, or, Barr 15 mg generic Dexedrine Spansules, from CVS, or Walgreen's, or Rite Aid. etc.
My ,medical literature tells me that GSK has licensed out various forms of Dexedrine brand, in Canada, to another pharmaceutical mfg., and that it may, or may not still be licensed out to UCB of UK or UCB of Australia, to, produce the famous tapered end Dexedrine Spansules, and/or the orange hearts of Dexedrine Sulfate I/R. I am wondering why the generic version of dextroamphetamine (5 mg tablets in particular) was unavailable for about 6 months in 2012, and then seems to have drastically increased in price (Barr, mfg.). The price for 135 5mg tablets was $392 dollars in Aug 2012, whereas it was about 5 times lower when I had been able to get it at the end of 2011.

I was told by a pharmacist that there is a quota on production imposed by the DEA. I would like to know why, and why the price of generic meds like this has skyrocketed.

oh my God, I'm so furious right now. After going almost a year with no Barr Dextroamphetamine instant release and being switched to Adderal which I hated, now I find out Barr is back. Last month 8/12 I filled it for $15, today I went to get it filled and it's $245! How the heck can they just raise a GENERIC almost 20x the price?? At first they were telling us only Brands were raised because we had an alternative generic that was cheaper. No more. Where in the heck am I gonna come up with $245 a month for a medicine I need just as much as a diabetic needs their insulin, etc. Furthermore, the generic Barr is crap and we all know it. It barely works. If generic Barr is $245 I may as well use the Dexedrine Brand name ER spanules.

I feel your angst!!! According to REDBOOK "Pharmacy's fundamental reference" 113th yr of publication, YEAR 2009, GSK Pharma Brand Name Dexedrine Sulfate 5 mg orange hearts, embossed E-19, "Average wholesale price" was exactly
$57.11 for one bottle of 100 tabs. Orange Book rating was the final step up a "AA" out of 17 lower bioequivalence rating classes!!! Ethex also had a AA rating, but was removed from the market place by our DEA and FDA during 2009, for multiple violations in their production process. Only "Barr Labs, a wholly owned subsidiary, now of Teva of Israel, who had a 2009 price, of 100 tabs, of "generic Dexedrine I/R sulfate, for a AWP of just $27.78 for the 5mg tabs!!!!!
I call this PRICE GOUGING, AND, THE QUALITY IS NOT THERE, COMPARED IMHO, TO GLAXO SMITH KLINE DEXEDRINE 5 MG HEARTS, OR, THE FORMER, SHIRE US, DEXTROSTAT, REMOVED FROM THE MARKETPLACE ALMOST 5 YRS AGO!!!

If you research the shortage you will see the DEA blames Shire and they blame the DEA. From what I had researched I am convinced the shortage was created by Shire.
Here is one of the better articles that sums it up.

Dexedrine and Lexapro
She is so bad off she can't work full time anymore
and has no insurance so she really has a hard time
with financing medicine
I told her I would check to see if there are programs
available to help someone like her
Thanks,

The drug companies and pharmacies have been in on it together for a long time now. AWP, Average wholesale price is an inflated price the drug companies would compile so the drug companies could base their prices on that. But the drug companies would actually purchase the drug for much less than that. It was a marketing tactic for drug companies because the bigger the AWP vs. actual cost to pharmacies, the more margin the pharmacies could make. It is hard to research but you can find that there are dozens of pricing methods made to obscure the actual cost/pricing of drugs. Many pharmacists don't even know about this. They just know the numbers they are given to manage. It's not the pharmacists that set the pricing.
So, as far as the problem with finding meds in the U.S. based on Amphetamines for a decent price, Shire created the shortage to prop up their name brand products and take back market share from the generic companies. They were in control of the supply to their competitors which is how they were able to pull this off. They also increased their prices to take advantage of that. I can't find any info as to whether the pharmacies further propped up the already inflated prices or not. But I do know that my pharmacy changed their billing to my insurance company from the UAC (Usual and customary) price to the AWP (Average Wholesale Price). If they had used another less inflated pricing model than the inflated AWP price, then I might not suspect that they also tried to take advantage of the shortage.
The Republicans have made sure the FDA doesn't have any authority in such matters. So their attempts to create free markets has resulted in an oligopoly. The DEA I feel could have done more to resolve the issue but didn't have much authority outside of managing the supply of amphetamines to make the drugs. Which they took too long to increase and didn't increase enough in my opinion.

Re: Peter Kay (# 2) Expand Referenced Message

I think it was probably an abuse thing. They were making 10mg dextrostat, they where scored so that you could still take half. I think they added the score so that people would not be as able to abuse it. The dextrostats I had taken just 2 years ago were almost as good as the originals.
