Developed A Tolerance To Oxycontin

Updated

My doctor has had me on the same pain medication (OxyContin 40mg) for the past 9 years. He won't increase it, I've asked him every time I see him. His practice is in Massachusetts, if it makes a difference. I know I've developed a tolerance because it doesn't work like it once did. The reformulation doesn't help matters. Anyone else have a problem with their doctor refusing to raise the quantity or dosage?

If you're asking him every time you see him, then he may be taking that as drug seeking behavior, which could explain his reluctance to increase the dosage.

Is this also a family doctor/general practitioner?

If so, that also explains a lot, as they aren't trained to treat pain and, with the relevant prescribing laws, they have to be very careful, since their prescribing practices are very closely scrutinized.

Have you considered seeing a pain management specialist?

Yes, he is my primary care physician, and NO I am not a "drug seeker" looking to get high. I just would like to live a normal life again, without being in pain 24/7. He sent me to a pain management specialist who used me as a guinea pig, trying every medicine under the sun on me, none of which worked, so I eventually stopped seeing him. My PCP did that also, until he prescribed the oxycontin which was the first and only medication that actually took the pain away. I've never abused my medicine or taken more than what is prescribed. I just want to be able to live an active life again. Our bodies build up a tolerance to medications, I believe that our doctors should prescribe according to that fact.

Yes i had this same problem in Mass they must be giving seminars on the subject because they all seem scared. Did you try M S Contin ever they seem more willing to go up on that one but it takes a few to get used to it but it keeps the pain away for me much longer, if you don't mind do you have a suggestion for a primary in mass. I feel like i would rather travel to see one than go to a pain clinic unless you had a decent experience with that I just don't know which direction to go in? I have been on OC's too up to 60 mgs do you take anything for breakthrough?

I've been on the same meds, for 5 yrs, been in PM for 10yrs. Started in Las Vegas in 2003-2004 on Lortab 10/500. Worked great but then started to have stomach issues. 2008 I was referred to a Pain Specialist who was the ABSOLUTE BEST DOCTOR I have ever had. 2010 I had to leave Vegas due to my ex husband stalking me. I was referred to a Pill Mill Joke. Dr saw Patients on Sat Nights, r u kidding me? Nope & now 3 years with this clown, same Meds, 15mg oxycodone 6X a day & Morphine ER 30mg 2 X a day. My appt was a week ago & he handed out a letter that the Pain Clinic will NO LONGER PRESCRIBE ANY NARCOTIC MEDS EXCEPT MORPHINE IM & ER.
Rumors flying around that he had 6 Overdoses in the last 2 yrs. Can he do that? Well i guess he can cuz he did!
Where do we go now? This DR had 6-7 pain clinics in RI, MA, NH & maybe Conn.

Hello to ALL my Massachusetts friends on/from this very OLD thread!?!...Hopefully ALL is well with Everyone's Health?!?....;))...and i am replying because You ALL seem to be fairly happy with your pain medicine and Pain Doctors!!...I on the other hand am having a brutal time finding just ONE Civilian Pain Doctor to address my numerous and severely painful lower back issues??...On the off chance that ONE of YOU or SOMEONE YOU know is Living IN Boston or to the SOUTH or WEST of the city Maybe, and Could quietly RECOMMEND A DOCTOR WHO ISN'T AFRAID to PRESCRIBE THE APPROPRIATE PAIN MEDICATION based on an exam of me and my MRI's/X Rays/other tests and scans etc.?? I promise that won't bore you with MY woes. Just need a name or 2 of Docs who will take this / ME seriously?!? And on that note i thank you in advance!...Most Sincerely...C. {edited for privacy}
