Depression & Celebrex

Updated

I have been on Celebrex for just over 6 months now. My Rheumatologist has had a heck of a time figuring out what exactly is wrong with me. So here it goes: for the longest time now I have been having flares, my muscles all stiffen up & spasm, which makes it hard to move. Joints hurt, but only because of the stiffness. I do not get restorative sleep and end up with depression quite badly. Energy level-zero. Heart race when I walk up the stairs (BTW Im 31 & weigh 135 & am 5'7' so its not related to my physical fitness). So Im stuck with this on again off again cycle that just about kills me. Suicide has been a big thought. So here's the kicker, being on the Celebrex has stopped all of the fatigue & mental issues. I have gone off and gone back on quite a few times because I am VERY ANTI-MEDICATION. The Depression always returns, along with negative thoughts about myself. The pain however still comes and goes, just not as bad. Also, so you know, I have had NO signs of inflammation come up in my blood work. This "inflammation" that I supposedly have may be the reason I have the depression, but I have also researched that there may be a link between minor brain inflammation and depression. If this is true, Celebrex is said to cross the blood brain barrier (BBB)...so could Celebrex be used to treat depression in the future? I'm just curious as to the fact that maybe my issues stem more from some sort of brain inflammation, so ibuprofen doesn't work for it, because it doesn't readily cross the BBB? I am looking for any type of feed back. I really do think that Celebrex works very well, I however do not want to risk my kidneys and liver, because I have to take 400 mg of Celebrex for the rest of my life, which could be another 50 years!!

Have you had any type of brain scans done to see if anything shows up?

Rather than a rheumatologist, you may do better with a neurologist.

The way you describe the muscles stiffening and then spasming closely resemble a type of seizure. And yes, there are some that occur like that, where they just seem to involve involuntary muscle movements, but there person is aware of what's happening the whole time. That's actually why some don't realize they are suffering seizures.

It would be a good idea to have it checked out, just in case.

I haven't had one done, but my rheumatologist actually thought that it might be good to get one, because I do have other symptoms that may actually be linked to MS. I guess I hadn't really thought about seizures. I might have to look into that just to make sure. Thanks for the comment

My mom has similar symptoms. It could be dystonia.
