It is completely normal for your body to eventually get used to the dosage of any medication that you've been taking for a long time, so it no longer works as well. When this happens, you'll either need to take a higher dosage, or switch to a different medication.

When it happens depends on your own body and its individual characteristics, some people can go years without having to have a dosage or medication change and others only make it a few months.

Have you tried any other antidepressants?

Don't bother trying other antidepressants. They will do the same thing Cymbalta does, possibly masking the Cymbalta withdrawal symptoms, which may be unpleasant (Google "Cymbalta withdrawal hell", etc.), and which (because of how antidepressants actually "work") may include worse depression. Based on the science behind them, it is more likely that any long-term improvement anyone experiences from an antidepressant is due to the placebo effect, but if they're still taking it, it's just helping them avoid withdrawal.

Sue, that attitude that will help you to success. As near as I can tell, the best way to help your brain undo it's adjustment to the Cymbalta is to make sure you get enough Omega-3 (preferably in fish) and vitamin D (sun, but don't overdo it), enough sleep (but don't agonize over it if you have difficulty sleeping - just give yourself 8 hours at night - no reading, TV, etc. in bed, nothing but sleep and sex), and healthy diet (organic if possible - see the Oct 2012 issue of Psychology Today, p 48 & 78-86).

Most important however, is keeping your brain stimulated. Do things you like, things that will get you laughing, things that will pique your interest, learn new things. Exercise your memory, think, read, listen to classical music you like... The more your brain works, the more it must do the things that allow and cause it to change.

Oh, and learn how the brain adjusts to psychoactive drugs (you'll have to search a bit for that, but it's there - the term neuroplasticity might help - here's something about psychoactive drugs: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychoactive_drug - note that Wellbutrin is the same kind of drug as cocaine, Cymbalta is an SNRI).

Once you understand how the brain adjusts, you'll realize that long term, antidepressants cannot be expected to do what they are supposed to do, but rather the opposite (by creating dependence). Antidepressants are severely misrepresented to doctors and the public, and their instructions and advertising are cleverly designed to be misleading.

Exactly, it "worked" until it stopped working. Claiming antidepressants "work" is misleading. Any desired effect isn't reliably reproducible on everyone. It's also temporary, because he brain sees the antidepressant as something wrong and adjusts for it (thereby creating dependence and leading to withdrawal when you stop taking it). Antidepressants are not medicine; they don't address a cause the way an antibiotic does; they just try to hide a symptom. Cymbalta didn't get rid of your depression, it just temporarily made your body feel better; a distinction that many doctors don't seem to comprehend.

Every psychoactive drug, including recreational drugs, sedatives and antidepressants (and Cymbalta); can affect everyone differently, including having different side effects. Some people like the feeling they get from a drug a lot, some a little, some not at all, and some hate the feeling they get. Some may like the feeling, but not as much as they hate one or more of the side effects (which happens often with antidepressants, because they're intentionally selected to not make you feel so good you'll keep wanting more = addictive).

If you were to try a recreational drug (which I recommend against), you might like the feeling it gives you or you might not, but if you take if regularly, its effect will diminish, you'll need to take more to get the original effect (a viscious cycle), and you'll have withdrawal symptoms if you don't keep taking it.

After 4 years on Cymbalta, you are complaining about depression and anxiety. According to the product information sheet, anxiety is a "frequent" side effect of Cymbalta (see Psychiatric Disorders, accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2007/021427s009s011s013lbl.pdft, bottom of page 26). The Cymbalta has stopped "working" (as expected), so you feel the depression it was hiding, but now you also have the side effect of anxiety to deal with. If you go to a doctor about the anxiety, you'll be prescribed an anxiolytic (e.g., Ativan), another psychoactive drug, and that will also stop working. Drug companys spend billions on advertising, spreading misinformation, and lobbying to convince people they can safely solve their problems by taking a pill that hides symptoms, knowing full well that dependence will keep them taking pills after they find out the pills don't work.

Hi I also have fibromyalgia! it was a nightmare to diagnose no one listen to me for at least 3 to 4 years about the pain I left Seattle Washington after living there for 30 years moved to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and was diagnosed. cymbalta has been a miracle. I would like to start a group that would help people learn more about fibromyalgia. believe me going to a chiropractor is a miracle also. the weather does play a part in your pain and also stress please take time to meditate and relax and take warm bath. when all else seems to fail then I pray.fibromyalgia have me trapped in bed for 3 years with caregivers. it's very important that you get rest so cancer doctor for sleeping pills. when you don't get enough sleep from the pain in your brain doesn't work well.going to the gym in going swimming is a great thing to do or walking on the treadmill to get some exercise. talk through your pain if you have a good support system.people that don't have fibromyalgia doesn't understand excruciating pain that you go through.today I am up moving around and have gone back to work. I will part time because the onset of fibromyalgia comes quick with stress.try to make your bedroom as comfortable as possible please don't stay in the bed all day it would just make your pain worse.I also use pain sprayon my back and that seems to give some relief also do a lot of stretching even while laying in bed stretch stretch stretch. I hope this helps someone out there with fibromyalgia or neuropathy pain .I will continue to pray for all those who are suffering. God bless you all
