Clonidine Mylan Vs Actavis

Updated

Hello, I am on clonidine hcl 0.2 mg. twice a day. I started on the Mylan brand and only took it for one month. Then I went to a different drug store and they gave me the Actavis brand. I have been taking the Actavis brand a few months now, but it seemed like the Mylan was better. I just got a new perscription of the Mylan brand again and just took my first pill. Can you all tell me which of these two brands of clonidine hcl work best for you or if you can tell any difference. After I am on the Mylan again for awhile I will post here again and let you know if it is really better then the Actavis. Anything anybody can tell me that have tried both of these brands of this medication would be of great help. Thanks, nora

Hi, Nora! Sorry about the problem you've had.

To clear it up for you…

There can actually be slight fluctuations from one generic medication to another. They are actually only required to measure against the name brand, not each other and they are allowed to differ from the name brand in the amount of the active ingredient by as much as plus or minus 20%. The FDA considers this an acceptable therapeutic window and most people never notice a difference, because when you're dealing with medications, in most cases the difference is a fraction of a milligram.

However, some people are very sensitive to any fluctuation in a drug, so that may be what's caused you to have this issue. It happens to me, too….so I can assure you that it isn't just you. There are many posts on here and other sites that are very similar to yours.

I haven't taken this medication, but to give you an example of an experience I had, I can use Spironolactone which is a type of diuretic. I was fine on 25mgs of the one my pharmacy originally carried, but when they switched I started getting diarrhea from it and would dehydrated super easy. My doctor finally had to prescribe it to me on an as needed basis and only half a tablet at time.

Can you post back and let me know how these ones work for you?

Thanks!

Hello, I have been able to continue on the Mylan brand of Clonidine seeing my pharmacy orders it for me even though that isn't the main brand they use. I will never take the Actavis brand again. I also have to have my pharmacy order the Watson brand of my Lorazepam because the Actavis brand of that isn't any good either. I don't trust the Actavis brand for anything.
